The Spirituality of the IntellectThe human intellect is spiritual, that is, not of the material world. This can be proven in two ways. One, that which is free of the conditions of matter is spiritual. Matter has limitations, so the intellect, which surpasses those limitations, must originate from a “higher orderâ€. Since matter cannot cause something that transcends itself, the intellect is not from material cause. Therefore, it must be of spiritual cause. Two, the intellect is free of the conditions of matter. For example, the intellect is aware of “justiceâ€, which is not material. “Since powers are not specified by their objects, this spiritual object requires a spiritual power.†The intellect also has knowledge of itself. It can reflect on itself and think about the act of thinking, whereas a material object, such as the eye, cannot see the act of seeing. Therefore, the human intellect is spiritual and free of the conditions of matter.
