a game that surprised me... so I had been thinking about whether or not to try playing through Heavy Rain for the PS3 when I read the review/opinion of the game as provided by DSchneider. I've personally always enjoyed the murder-mystery type of story, and his positive outlook on the game swayed me more towards wanting to play it instead of just sitting on the fence about it. with that said, I'd like to point out something extremely important about Heavy Rain:
Heavy Rain is NOT a game...it is an experience.
I say this not because it's a poorly designed game which can always lead to a bad experience, or anything of that nature...it just simply doesn't play like a traditional game at all. the mechanics that are used to move around and interact with the environment are so radically different from what is considered the 'norm' for this type of game that it's very likely that it could lose people in the first hour or so. I personally found it to be rather intuitive for the type of experience that QuanticDream was trying to create.
this brings up my next point: I actually think I've found a game that moves too slow for my tastes. most people who know me will agree that I'm generally open to at least attempting to play a game as long as it's not sports-oriented...or Barbie's Horseriding Adventures, etc., but I have tried and tried and tried to keep interest in Heavy Rain to the point that it's almost too much effort just to want to play. I spent the better part of a weekend (read: 16+ hours) going through and interacting with the environment and following the story. it just couldn't seem to hold my attention. the game itself is absolutely beautiful, and the level of interaction and control that you have is impressive...albeit moving around is more like driving an RC car (R2 to move forward & Left analog stick to steer) than simply pushing the direction that you want to go.
I hope that with all of the accolades that Heavy Rain has garnered that QuanticDream continues to push forward with game/software development and urge the rest of the industry to keep trying new things. I'm a little disappointed in myself that I couldn't bring myself to stick with it and actually finish the game at least once, but again it's not for lack of trying...just lack of interest.
as I said before it's a beautifully built game, it's just not my particular cup-of-tea...as surprising as that may be.
