Big Thanks

It took a lot of people working together to get the video podcast out this week. Brandon did a lot of research into ways to shoot this and helped navigate the trickiness of making a multiclip sequence work in Final Cut. Griffon did a great job decorating the set, even coming in to work on it while she was super sick. Marshall was an awesome camera operator who also took care of the Color work. While not directly production related, Ben worked hard to make the video podcast integrate and work well with our back catalog of audio podcasts. Also, gotta give a shout out to JayOrDan for getting me high def versions of his drunk tank animated adventures for use in this video podcast. Of course big thanks to Burnie and Geoff for moving the conversation along during the past 100 podcasts.

We hope to do more of these in the future. Now that we have our technical issues ironed out I think we can work on making the video podcasts longer if it goes over well with you guys.

It was a lot of hard work but I'm pleased with the final result and I hope you guys check it out.

I thought the vid format looks good, and it was interesting to see the setup in action.

Most importantly, I thought the duration was spot-on. Any longer and the idea of watching a 'radio show' might get a little staid, especially as there isn't a lot of activity going on, visually. The break scenes from JayOrDan were a great idea.

The 2-break format opens the show up to new possibililties: columnists, AHWU segues, ads of course :( and maybe 30s guest news spots from RT users who summarise the week that was on site in some aspect of other. Naturally you'd have to screen the crap out of the latter for quality and content, so maybe not such a good idea, but it's a proven way to encourage program loyalty... and therefore advertising exposure numbers :(

One thing to think about for the future is taking out the forest of mic stands. They limit view and restrict movement. Those are some pretty fat condensers you've got there. And Lavs are bullshit. Headset mics (and I'm not talking those bulky, crap-quality gamer headsets) get tricky because, like lavs, you can't back away from them to take in some suds... or the reverse...

2 low-cost shotgun mics (1 per 2 people sitting close together at a 2 foot distance from the mic) on table mounts might be the go. Placed on insulating foam or in shockmounts.

Check out the Rde NTG-1: cheap, comes with a shock mount, and is a short shotgun: that means it's a little more forgiving in terms of being on-mic or not, and is easier to work with in small environments. Also, when not in podcast use, Matt can chuck it on a boom or on the camera for field work.

I was kinda turned off by the ads. I would pay extra on the sponsorship if that kept me from seeing those. Awesome job otherwise! Are you guys thinking about youtube integration like Diggnation? that way, instead of a linkdump, you could have the videos on the video podcast.
Just a thought.

The video podcast is great, and obviously works well for momentous occasions such as a 100th podcast. But in general, simplicity is better.
