In Real Life Org - July 8th, 2013I know, I know - I don't post for a whole year, then I'm back with a vengeance and a novel-length journal entry. At least it's an exciting one! I have been working with CoolCaiti on an upcoming initiative that we are both thrilled to share with you:

In Real Life is an organization that gives online communities the opportunity to do offline good by coordinating volunteer community service projects which coincide with technology, media and gaming conventions all over the world.

In other words - think of all these awesome, fun, talented people who you've met through RT and other online communities. Now envision getting together with them all in one place. NOW imagine working...

In Real Life is an organization that gives online communities the opportunity to do offline good by coordinating volunteer community service projects which coincide with technology, media and gaming conventions all over the world.

In other words - think of all these awesome, fun, talented people who you've met through RT and other online communities. Now envision getting together with them all in one place. NOW imagine working together with them as a team to serve a community, all while hanging out, chatting, eating, picture-taking and all that fun stuff, of course.

THAT is what IRL Org is all about - bringing online communities together as friends and teammates, taking the power of your camaraderie and generosity offline to to do incredible and beneficial things in communities all over the world. IRL Org is in its inaugural year and will kick off with its first community service event in Austin, TX on Monday, July 8th in conjunction with RTX, the gaming and online media convention created by Rooster Teeth!

Caiti and I are working with several local non-profit organizations to place volunteers (you!!) on service projects including park and habitat restoration for the City of Austin, conservation projects with Austin Creative Reuse and helping the Sustainable Food Center get settled into their new facility, to name a few. We are doing our best to round up lunch and as many other perks as possible for everyone who is able to volunteer their time, so we hope you can join us!

I was so excited when Caiti presented this idea, and I am honored to be part of organizing such an incredible opportunity. We feel like this opportunity to foster a real-life sense of kinship within our online communities while contributing to the greater good is invaluable, and it's a chance to show the rest of the world just how positive, loving, generous, and awesome communities like this can be! Your contribution to such a project will not only mean the world to us, but together we’ll find ourselves making a difference, and isn’t that what community is about?
