Wood is unbelievably strong and proud. Even the smallest plank can stop the largest tanks in their tracks, as displayed in all the rockstar games.

In L.A. Noire you can clear out an entire room of enemies with just your pistol. But climb over a small beam of wood? It's asking a little much of your character :P
