"rm *.java" - a command that will live in infamny
Today I experienced what i can only describe as a near death experience. I've got a group project for one of my programming courses, and it is fairly extensive. Me and my two teammates have put around 30 or 40 man-hours into it thus far. This morning i got up at 9 to meet them at the computer cluster to work on it some more. I arrived early, so i thought i would do a little housekeeping of the files.
My distinct thought was "hmmmm, it would really suck if I typed *. java instead of *.class ( in order to remove all the .class files, thus causing a full recompilation next time we ran the program). Sure enough, thats exactly what i typed when i was thinking that. Then the concrete block landed on my skull.
Naturally i freaked. One of my teammates showed up shortly thereafter and tried to calm me down, tell me its not so bad, we'll be ok. Of course, inside i know he's probably freaking to, but i was rather hysterical at the time. He (Dan) was a pretty good friend of mine as well, so i appreciated his concern for my well being over the code's unfortunate demise.
Finally the last teammate showed up, and i jumped all over him:
"Please, God, tell me you backed up last time we worked. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU BACKED UP!?!?!?!?!?"
He calmly walked into the cluster, assesed the situation, then patiently described to me the "snap restore" program installed on the Unix servers here at my school. I have never been so relieved in my entire life.
Ive still had the shakes all day. Armageddon had been averted. Life is good.
Lets see what damage i can do tomorrow.
