The final straw came at being called an asshole. I know, harsh. But the reason why started to eat at me until it snowballed and I became furious. I left and forgot about this site until recently when I looked it up at work. Basically, someone (we'll call him Bob) was upset because his good friend (we'll call him Joe) was being shipped out to Iraq. Apparently Joe was some sort of analyst if I remember correctly, and Bob was upset because Joe was being deployed in a combat role. Bob's reasoning was that since Joe was an analyst, and joined the Armed Forces to become this analyst, he shouldn't be deployed in a combat role.

So, people are leaving Bob all these messages and well wishings about how messed up this situation is. Well apparently Bob doesn't know much about the Armed Forces. Now I left a comment for Bob offering support and hoping Joe would come home safely. Maybe I should have left it at that, but I added that Bob needed to remember that Joe is in the Armed Forces and therefore, he is at their mercy. Joe knew the risks going in. I didn't say the following but I kind of wished I did, and that is if Joe DIDN'T know the risks, he's an idiot for signing up.

So here comes this jerkhole (Al we'll call him) who comes in and leaves me this rude message of what an ass I am. Al briefly stated that I was an insensitive jerk and I totally ignored the situation. Al maintained that since Joe was an analyst, he shouldn't be deployed in a combat role and that I had no idea what I was talking about and that Joe was trying to earn money for college and he was such an intelligent person that it would be a crime if he died in Iraq. It didn't end there. I tried to do some damage control (bad idea) and what I got was basically an email cursing the day I was born. I contemplated writing back explaining my position and why I felt so deeply about my convictions. I thought about this for a few days and just got so angry that I couldn't even type. I seriously wanted to meet Al in person and tell him what I thought personally. But now that cooler heads prevail I still feel compelled to explain my position.

The easiest way to resolve this situation is to ask a Serviceman to take out their ID card. Ask them what it says. It says, "Armed Forces of the United States." Not "Free College Fund of the United States." Understand what you are doing. You cannot enjoy the benefits of Service without enduring some of the risks. One of those risks is you might be placed in a combat situation where your life could be in jeopardy. It doesn't matter who you are, or what branch you serve, or what duty you perform. There may come a time when you are handed a rifle, and told to stand a post. A perfect example is a good friend of mine who was in the Air Force. He was an ordanance officer. He was told he was shipping out. He thought he would be working on an air base.....NOPE. He was handed a rifle and placed into convoy escort. That's right, convoy escort. So his job is providing security for vehicular convoys....that seems like a job for someone in the Air Force. He didn't bitch. He did his duty, did it well (Two confirmed kills) and returned home safe. To this day, if you ask him about it, he'll tell you that he has no regrets and no complaints. He signed on and he knew what to expect. In fact, when I asked him about it, he pulled his ID and asked me what it said.

So having got that out and feeling better about myself, I would like to say the following:

Bob-I hope your friend came home safe

Joe-I hope you came back safe

Al- KISS MY ASS.
