Why is this just biology? I want some Physics.

Maybe because Sally specializes in that field? But I agree, it would be cool to hear them talking about other subjects. And maybe invite other scientists, to take the burden off of Sally who might not know as much about e.g. Physics or Chemistry.

I agree with you. Not that Sally isn't awesome, but I would like to see them bring in a chemist or  a physicist.

I know people like Chris and I have nothing against him but this just isn't funny IMO.  I preferred Let Me Clarify vs this trying to force funny program.  I think this is the last episode I'll watch.

Yeah feels like Chris is padding time in the Sally and Gus show.  Let Me Clarify was really good.  I could see how adding someone would help expand the show beyond a Q&A but the dumb answer followed by a right answer isn't the way to go.

I love this show but I wish it was longer. Chris also has some really good follow up questions at times & I think they get overshadowed by him trying to explain the topic first. I'd like to see Sally answer then have Gus & Chris (or whoever else) ask questions about it.

Having come from a chemistry based background, I really enjoy when RT gets its science on as it generally provides a great laugh when one knows the concept, one kinda gets it (but cant really explain it to others) and one who just has an imaginary question marks bubble over their head and a confused look on their face.

Please keep this going as I think as it gets more refined it could become RT's infinite monkey cage (which I consider the ultimate science show, it is worth looking up if science is a passion). I know Sally's primary background is biology based, but can we have the odd inclusion of physics and chemistry questions.

Looking forward to the next episode

What about how adrenaline affects the perception of time? It wasn't even mentioned.

    • SimsJoseph FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

They did. In discussing how drugs affect your perception, as well as emotional states like anxiety. A rise in adrenaline is your body's chemical response to an exterior factor, therein it would be similar to Sally's example of giving a public speech.

Showing photos while they're explaining is a great touch -- helps to understand.

One request though, can we get Chris a white board? I feel like giving him a visual aid will help in focusing his explanation. He was correct; but, without the ability to explain so in depth it seemed as though he was wrong.

It would also be great to add in science experiments. Maybe not every episode but have them be the equivalent to food days on the RT Podcast.

this show is great the way its set up but i feel like it might be better at a longer run time like 20-30, it just feels like the eps end abruptly/ there's more you all have to say on the topics.

The first question was really interesting. I assumed the answer would have something to do with the frequency of communication through the reticular formation, and I suppose I wasn't terribly far off. I remember hearing when I was young that flies saw the world in slow motion because of their advanced processing power, and that's why it was hard to swat them, but never really got any elaboration on it.

I'm also probably going to be doing my study-design group-term-project for my Animal Behaviour course based on last week's video: on the time taken by species to adjust their sexual selection preferences in accordance with environmental modifications that either a) render the previous sexual trait neutral, and b) render the previous sexual trait undesirable (assuming a trait with direct correlation between trait strength and fitness). Then, look at the number of generations it takes for a significant correlation to form with mating rates for the variation in the new desirable rate and the significant correlation to dissolve/reverse (respectively, with the two experimental conditions) for the old trait. We're not carrying the study out, just doing the experimental design, but I thought y'all'd want to know that the question from last weeks' video is being used for something!

According to Einstein we all perceive time differently. If you take his theory to heart I would ASSUME that people closest to the equator perceive time slower as they are moving faster.

I'm actually think about this more as we are talking about a 3-D space. So there are a lot of factors.

This is probably my favorite show on RT.  I did like it better when they got to several questions at once, but hearing Chris try to figure it out as well is entertaining.  Maybe make it a 30 minute show instead of 15?

  • TimeLordStarship

Chris is annoying on this show. Saying that brings on the disagreeing comment mods, fine.

It's still frustrating to have a host word things so badly, and act more stupid than he is.

Hopefully this show can rotate out hosts that act that way, at least for the sake of variety.

Because the format change from the pilot episodes is good, and Gus and Sally are fantastic for this content, yet this show can be so much better.

It could be one of the great science shows and with the Rooster Teeth humor and charisma brought to the genre. Not something that just leans on an annoying host that Sally has to deal with.

I am not gonna down vote you, that is legitimate commentary.
Maybe a rotation could work for this show, when it is in a full sprint, but its still in its baby steps, and the chemistry at this point works well: Gustavo an intellectual who loves knowledge and knowing more, Sally an educated (beautiful) actual scientist, and Chris who gives a real "John Everyman" take on genuinely abstract questions, and with some knowledge a little logic and reasoning skills he is able to put together competent answers, and i dont think there is too much of an act there, counting how often Chris is half-right i wouldnt deem the "act" as playing dumb.

I do agree that other employees would be add interesting mix-up, but maybe with targeted question and with longer special episodes, i.e. have someone who thinks they know a thing, come get schooled.

I don't know if the discussion about eye/brain "hertz" is entirely accurate. There is not even definite conclusive evidence that we see in "frames" and that seems like a ridiculously low number. It seems more like the pseudo-scientific stuff you read about on gaming message-boards. How are companies even marketing 100+ hz monitors? If anyone's more knowledgable about this, feel free to add to this.

    • RiordanOwensAus FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Marketing, is why, people want to have the newest and best thing, hence why there are 100+ Hz monitors, hence why we are getting 8K TVs in the next couple of years and why we will eventually get 12K, 16K, 20K, ect

    • Quanze FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Part of it is marketing like Cabouse said, part of it is that there is a bit of an actual range between different people, and part of it is that what the scientist are studying doesn't exactly align with what the products are doing.

    • Smooth_Dog FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Alcoholic

While I'm not sure if there's been extensive experiments done on the "refresh rate" of monitors, I think that 60 fps might just be an arbitrary number/standard that the gaming industry agreed upon in the 80s. I would love to be wrong. But so far I feel like the statement that we have a 60 hertz refresh rate just doesn't sit well with me...

    • Velric FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

There's a lot of info on the topic, but most people can see a difference up to about 120 frames per second. With the maximum being somewhere from 200-300fps. I have a 144hz monitor. It's not a huge deal going from 60 to 144, but it is noticeable.

    • Quizzical_Quark FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It's more than marketing, don't ask me why but there's a huge difference between a 60 Hz monitor and a 144/165 Hz monitor. It looks a lot smoother.

You know those conversations that don't go anywhere because the guy can't get his answer straight and makes you wanna punch him to get on with it. That's me right now. Look, nothing against Gavin, Chris, and Brandon (specifically in that order, least dumb to greatest), but I do sometimes wanna punch them. I know they aren't dumb, hell Gavin has a slow mo guys video of him explaining cameras, and he does a damn good job of it, and on a number of occasions he conceptually knows what he's getting at. As shown on this series, Chris can get the right concept. Brandon... um... yea I can't think of a good example for him, all I think of is that one rt life video of him melting a patch of ice with hot water, which if he thought it through, would seem like a really dumb idea. In either case, the most common problem for these guys is that they don't think their thought through and/or can't phrase it correctly, more often than not, it's funny, but at the same time I wanna punch them sometimes. Chris doesn't really add anything to the conversation, he either gets the concept correct, in which case it is just confirmed and clarified by Sally or gets it entirely wrong, in which case Sally just corrects. I've mentioned this before in the old format, I really want them to include other scientific topics/experts like physics, geology, etc.

tl;dr - I prefer the old format and want to include other topics. I also wanna punch Chris.

I liked "let me clarify" more, both title and concept.

I get that they wanted a normal person's guess on the question on the show. But i don't think Chris was the right choice, and especially because he's "forced" to make up an explanation for something he has no knowledge about. He's just pulling stuff out of his ass, and coming surprisingly close to the actual answer. But it makes it more confusing for me.

I would like it better if they'd just let Sally explain it, and let Chris and Gus ask questions.

The tiger beetle can run super fast but can only run in short bursts because its brain cant keep up. So every time it stops it has to realise where it is then calculate where to run again in another short burst. Don't know if it helps with understanding the time question at all but its interesting.
