    Gosh, my first computer memory...

I remember that we had a screen with a yellow frame (which is why I used to refer to that computer by "the yellow computer") and the actual computer unit worked with cassette tapes, yes, actual cassettes, like music tapes. And I remember playing some sort of ladder and platforms game on it.

Later on we had an Atari ST and the best dungeon crawler in the world, ever: Dungeon Master.

When I played Runescape as a kid, I told my cousin to go to the site. He swapped some letters in there by accident and it totally brought us to a porn site. We were, like, eight and had no idea what to do.

no one mentioned Monkey Island which saddened me

But then Miles said Carmen Sandiego and I WAS THERE! I used to play that with an Atlas on my lap, turned to the currency fact sheet at the back. Before the Euro came in, children, there were like 50 extra currencies within Europe that were referenced as clues in that game constantly.

I think the first memory I have of being on a computer is a game called "Treasure Mountain!" I don't remember much about it, but I played it a lot. I also recall the JumpStart games, a 101 (or maybe 102) Dalmatians "game" that I never understood and that was probably just a demo, and some weird game where you dig up dino bones and own a restaurant.

I had all of the iSpy games, The Time Warp of Dr. Brain, the Putt Putt games, and a handful of others. This podcast really took me back.

Steam needs to get a hold of all of these games; they'd make a killing selling it to people who want to play for nostalgia's sake.

@johno3998 I knew they had the Putt Putt games, but I had never heard of fatty bear. I meant more the iSpy games - I found a couple on eBay, but I can't seem to find them all.

Well I just took a trip down nostalgia lane.

I actually had the whole Rugrats game, I played that game so much. The bit in the toy store at night with the 'king kong' toy always scared the shit out of me.

    Also Sims is my jam.

So I'm that old MF'er, my first computer experience was 'helping' my dad load punch cards and changing reel to reel magnetic tapes at his office. I played Pong when it first came out and beat all the adults.

Also, the Sims for me, I've always loved spending hours and hours designing the families and the houses etc, but then actually playing the game I'd get 5 minutes in and be bored.

Oh my god I worshipped that animated video of the alien lip synching to I Will Survive!! That's one of the earliest videos I remember seeing on a computer. I used to ask to watch it all the time in... the computer room! (Ours was technically a computer "loft" but we still called it the computer room) I also played Putt-Putt, Freddie Fish, and that Rugrats demo game was my jam! Right on though, I totally played Minesweeper. Loved that shit. And I discovered The Sims when The Sims 2 had come out (I wasn't a PC kid, I was a console kid - Sega Genesis, Nintendo 64, fuck yeah!) and to this day I am a Sims fan. The reason I loved it was that it's basically a simulator for being a god. Who wouldn't love that?!

My dad is a software engineer so we always had at least 2 home computers which was unheard of for a long time amongst the kiddos I was in school with. But my earliest memory of using a computer myself was actually an old broken work/company issued laptop that my dad gave me. That thing was huge - so clunky and the keyboard was horrendous - and the only things the computer could do were: turn on, open NotePad, and function for about 35 minutes. On a good day.

oldest memory of using a computer, playing lemmings on my uncle's PC (pre 286) with an orange and black screen.
first use of PC for naughty things was probably looking up boobs or breasts (or something similar) on encarta 95 when we finally got 486 PC in the computerlabs at highschool in '97. Or when my parents leased a pc so I could study for my exams in 98' and got a dial up intertnet connection with a "family friendly" ISP that was supposed to block inappropriate content, my first askJeeves search "boobs" = no porn blocked here.

So, I remember doing the whole "locking them in one room" from Sims, but I would do it with Zoo Tycoon. Fire ALL the workers and build fences around my zoo, and then just let all the animals loose. That was my childhood PC gaming right there.

Mica, I had the full Rugrats game on the playstation, and I replayed it like a year ago, and let me tell you, it still holds up. Best game! Pretty sure that was the first video game I ever played, and it will always hold a spacial place in my heart.

In regards to The Sims; to answer your question Miles, the reason girls seem to love The Sims so much is because it's basically a computerized version of playing with dolls, only better! Also, The Sims 2 is the best Sims and always will be!

I thought I was the only one who had a computer room too, because none of my other friends growing up had one!! So glad to know I'm not alone in that!

My first encounter with naughty stuff wasn't on the computer. I was realllllyyy young like either 7 or 8 and I came across a magazine in a family member's car. I flipped it open and the first thing I saw was what I thought was a girl licking an elephant's trunk. I was really confused and opened the rest of the page [it was a folded up picture] and well... I figured out that that did NOT belong to an elephant.
