I mostly agree, just as long as upon making your joke you have a knowledge that something you're joking about is still a shitty thing, like cancer IS realistically horrible, and if on a normal day, someone tells you hey, 'I just found out someone I know has cancer," you aren't going to joke about it then and there or with that person.

Know your audience and keep a distant sense of humanity.

this was such a valuable, articulate video dis cussing from Miles&Kyle: than you for both being so open wit your personal examples of sensitive triggers that you have had to desensitize yourselves to and heal.

The mind IS resilient, asyousaid Miles. People need to take the time to work on how they respond to their thoughts. Their thoughts are not their truth and neither are their emotional, instinctual responses to such thoughts- they are learnt/conditioned behaviours from early development that can be unlearned. Take a step back, observe thoughts for the powerless chemical impulses they are and live more authentically on a higher level of stable truth; using emotions as a guide rather than dictation of the path you take. Rely on intellect and logic, use emotions only to access your moral compass

And usually, desensitisation to triggers only comes with a) time and b) further exposure/facing what upsets you. People need to treat talking therapies as the same healing process for the mind as physio is for your ruptured ACL example... only when people start taking responsibility for their own mental health can this ridiculous age of over-sensitive censoring/pandering end and we can move away from "lowest common denominator" humour (as Funhaus say ) and back to something more clever but edgy. (*Don't just insert Nazi joke here*)

Unfortunately, the only 'edgy' we have been left within in mollycoddled mainstream comedy is the ratio of normal language words to swearwords. Which is certainly NOT clever, stimulating or funny.

This is a kinda old sponsor play so is anybody really gonna see this? Nonetheless, (I am referring to the conversation regarding sensitivity to jokes) I feel that if you're going to make a joke about something "sensitive", like have it actually be a joke, if you know what I mean? Like not have it actually just be a rude, offensive jab at something but something you can laugh at. For example, "I was gonna tell a gay joke, butt fuck it." or something along the lines of that. Y'know, like jokes aren't meant to hurt people.

But even then - you should make sure that everybody that you are telling this joke too is okay and comfortable with it and that you're not just being an asshole. If an oppressed person is telling you that what you're saying is offensive, then you should apologize and not do it again, there needs to be a certain line of how far you can go.

Like my friend Taylor (DrNux), will apologize to me if he finds himself using the word "gay" to describe something because he knows that that can offend some people and wants to make sure that I'm not offended by his remark since I am in fact, gay. Even then, he'll say to me "oh, you're so gay" but I know for a fact that that's just a joke and there are no ill itentions.

I know I can't really compare with any traumatizing experiences but, as another example - I'm Chinese and some of my friends will joke "Ha, ha, communism!" but I don't find that offensive because 1) they're my friends and 2) I know that they're not being serious. But one person I knew took it too far when they said that they have "yellow fever" as in a fetish for (specifically East) Asian women, and they weren't joking. That really set me off and offended me but they wouldn't apologize about it.

And even then, things like rape really shouldn't be joked about anyways. This in itself can be a sensitive subject.

TL;DR don't be an asshole and apologize to people if they say something offends them.

A lot of people at RT have mentioned Louie before and I was a little hesitant to start watching it because I've never been a fan of cringe humor. But its fucking hilarious and honestly, its nothing compared to what the internet can dish out so maybe I'm more desensitized than I thought. Glad people have brought it up though since its definitely worth watching.

Regarding addressing tumblr sensitivity, people do seek help for their traumas, but personally being a rape survivor and talking to other people in the same situations, there is a difference between scoliosis jokes, which poke fun at a temporary state of being which does not severely hinder one's ability to feel safe in public and does not frequently result in PTSD, is totally different than rape jokes such as "shhh it will all be over soon" which, coming from a company who we grow to love and adore, makes rape survivors not only remember what is probably the most traumatic experience of their lives but also feel like their "friends" are condoning what happened to them.

TLDR; if the experience someone goes through results in PTSD (war, rape etc), then making the joke can trigger horrible flashbacks (as they go through the therapy process, because most people with PTSD do in fact have professional/medical help).

Vastly late on this, I know, but I feel you've sort of missed some things. Kyle talked about his experience with scoliosis in the Halo videos, how he had to have surgery that messed with his plans for college and how, while he was in the hospital, there were times where he was in so much pain he literally couldn't scream and that he only got through it because he knew it would either stop or he'd die, and it'd be over either way. I really feel that it's an issue when people go 'yeah, but it's not that bad; it's not really comparable to this other thing. The fact of the matter is that a lot of shit sucks.

And you have to live with it afterwards, which also sucks. But a lot of people manage and learn to deal with it and don't let it define or stop them--and I think that's a very important part of it. I'm not trying to, like, advocate dragging people back through their awful shit, but I think that in a lot of ways the...coddling that the whole constant trigger warning thing supports is disrespectful because it implies that this horrible thing happened to some person or group and now it defines them forever and if it's brought up again, it could break them. Frankly, I think people are stronger than that.

And smarter, frankly. Because I'm pretty sure everyone mature enough to be called an adult knows the difference between joking about something and condoning it.

Miles, regarding jokes that might be offensive, I think it depends on the context and location. If a comedian makes fun of cancer patients while entertaining hospital staff, that's not appropriate. I think comedians like Gabriel Iglesias has a good balance. He makes fun of the difficulties he encountered of his size. Basically his jokes are derived from what he had experienced in life. Somehow people can accept that.

I feel that context is key with potentially sensitive jokes. I've never been put off by a group of RT staff joking around because that's what you expect with them. I know there's no ill will intended. But when it comes to internet comments there is little to no context so I think people just assume the worst out of habit and retaliate with their worst. At least that's what I hope, otherwise the majority of humans are borderline psychotic axe-murderers ready to hunt you down for daring to exist.

I really feel Miles in this episode. Tumblr has the idea that the public has to put trigger warnings on everything, whereas my philosophy is that people need to manage their own triggers. Not to get into stuff, but I've been (directly or indirectly) through a lot of the typical triggers, but the way I've learned to cope with them is to be able to laugh about it and understand that the world isn't going to change and start trigger warning everything just to accommodate me.
