Just a few weeks ago I was offered a internship at a music studio that will lead into paid work soon! They've been teaching me a lot and I've been teaching them a lot about video production for live streams! It's been great and I've met some big name people in the industry. As it's thanksgiving I want to thank you Burnie (Jack and Geoff too) for inspiring me to go on this road! Have a great break!

Dear people of the RT comments section.  Do not, under any circumstances, work an unpaid internship.  They are almost always illegal, and they are illegal for a reason.  Burnie's bit in here about doing unpaid work and then trying to get paid work afterwards is shameful.  DO NOT work for free.  Anyone who tries to sell you on the "value of the experience" is selling you snake oil.  No one should ever work for free.

Unpaid internships are not illegal by default, there is a list of 6 criteria that an internship must meet to be unpaid, if it doesn't meet those then it has to be paid or is considered illegal. While I think more internships should be paid, you shouldn't spread false info.

Okay so I've had to deal with this actually professionally in both Australia and the UK mainly and I'm guessing the US, Canada, other EU countries would have similar guidelines but it really breaks down to whether it provides educational benefit to the Student doing the unpaid internship and if the company fails that then basically they are operating outside of what is acceptable.

Similarly, at least in NSW Australia that I can remember more specifically, a company is legally not allowed to use an internship as a means to trial a candidate out for a job however this is usually the case most often with many companies and is often overlooked by most governments due to it being difficult to prove.

I've done both good and bad internships. I've done one where for 3 months I had to work 8 hours 4 days a week, between uni and paid work, that was basically slave labour with a reference held hostage at the end. And I've done one where they actually benefited me and taught me more about my field, HR, and was extremely understanding of my work and uni demands and treated me well.

Ultimately what you can do as an individual is research the crap out of a company and find out yourself. If you can find individuals who have interned there before or go through sites like Glassdoor to get a better idea. Alternatively you can go through a University or third party company which will offer some level of protection/filter.

TLDR As with any job understand who you are working for, their reputation and ask them questions about what you will actually be doing. Doesnt have to be bad always

Why does Matt sound great in videos like these but then always sound like hes got something in his throat on a podcast. I love seeing the guy in content and all but if he could eat some of that candy next time he was on the RT podcast that would be greeeat

    #1- Matt is pure.

#2- I really, really needed to hear the bit about saying 'no'.

#3- Ellie is adorable and I love her.

#4- Thank you for giving us a little peek at the incredible broadcast team. I'd love to get glimpses of them during livestreams more often!

Over the years, I have learned that I cannot possibly say yes to everything. I have been doing programming for almost 15 years now and I had to slowly learn that it's not about saying no in order to be selfish or to only do work that benefits myself. It is more about needing to choose what is possible for me to handle and what is not possible. If I decided to try and take on every project that I was asked to do or had an opportunity to do, I literally could not do it all.

There comes a time when you need to realize you cannot possibly say yes to every project that comes your way. And yes, unfortunately that does include paid work.

Burnie, I'd like to thank you for putting together these inspiring blogs. After years of working on both independent and professional projects, I'm happy to say I will finally be going fully independent in a few months. I can't say I can pretend to know what is around the corner or whether I will be able to maintain it, but I'd like to think that the inspiring work and messages that these amazing people at RT have put together is definitely what has helped me to realize the possibilities.

I honestly think I've learned more about building business and how to effectively work myself into the industry from these vlogs than any classes or other resources I've encountered. While I love all the fun adventures with Ellie, it'd be awesome to have more videos like these again.

I'm experiencing this struggle right now with my Senior year of college. I know I have experience enough to go out and do things officially, but I literally can't say no because I will fail courses and not graduate. Very frustrating

Great content, but unless I missed it I think the vlog could have also touched on saying yes out of selflessness and not just say no out of selfishness, while still realizing when it's time to truly say no.

Ah yes. My second time on a Burnie vlog for 0.2 seconds. I'm the camera man on the left at 8:42. Previously Burnie came to UT for an entrepreneurship talk and took a swipe of the small crowd for the vlog then.

Here's a video I took right after the stream concluded with people congratulating each other.

Meanwhile, the assistant, turned assassin, scout must pull off a covert operation whilst posing as Burnie. Will her training leave her prepared? Will they raise $1million for charity?! This and more on this week's episode of Burnie Vlog.

I really liked this Vlog. I enjoy the "inner workings" theme as it gives so much helpful advice. Especially around not working for nothing forever. If you have a talent, take the opportunities to learn when you can, paid or not, but be aware that there is a limit and your skills have a monitairy value to them. Also, hey Burnie. I met you at RTX LONDON and I asked you to hold up our badge. Do you remember that by any chance? I'd love to send you a link to the video to get your critique!
