TL;DR I think CampCamp sucks and here's my opinion on how to make it better.

God, this show is just straight up unwatchable most of the time. There are a few alright moments I like, but most of the time, It feels like a chore to get through the thing.

The first thing that really pisses me off about this show is how uninteresting and annoying most of the cast is. David is probably the worst of the bunch and I hate how much screen time he gets. The only thing I know about his character is that he's way too fucking chipper and bouncy all the time, and he's a dumbass.

Now, I know what you're thinking, "He's written that way for comedic effect." and If you seriously think he's actually funny, then I feel sorry for you because only a 5-year-old would laugh at that shit. Whenever David's on screen, I just want to smash my head into a wall , again and again until it's over. He's just NOT funny.

David isn't the only one guilty of being annoying, most of the kids in the show are annoying too, but for totally different reasons. The reason why most of the kids are annoying is because they're so one dimensional and boring. Now, I understand when writing a story, some characters can't be developed more than others because they're not as relevant to the central plot. But even so, wouldn't it be a good idea to at least have them do something relevant in the story? Aside from a few unfunny tidbits, the secondary characters just stand around like fucking props.

Now you might be thinking that I'm being WAY too harsh on a webshow like this, and I should just enjoy it for what it is. And you may be right about me being harsh. But knowing that RoosterTeeth can do so much better than this boring mess, it's kind of hard to enjoy it for what it is.

Being someone who has been a RoosterTeeth fan for a reasonable amount of time, I've come to love a lot of content made by this company.

Take for instance Ten Little Roosters. The murder mystery premise hooked me from episode one and I'd always look forward to a new episode every week. You want to know why it was so compelling? It's because it was both funny AND well written. Nothing ever felt forced or took me out of the story. Despite being totally ridiculous, the characters all had consistent personalities, quirks, and goals that made them interesting(and hilarious) to watch. Gus was the douche bag with a love for his poetry, Miles was the underdog trying to save the day, and Bernie was an undercover cop on the hunt for the murderer. You see what I'm getting at? They all had motives and likable things about them that made you care about what was going on.

With CampCamp, there's barely anything to like about these characters. The only character that I personally enjoy watching is Max (Maybe even Gwen because she hates David). With Max, I feel like I understand who he is and his desire to leave camp Campbell is a character motivation I can get behind. With the other two main kids, I couldn't give two fucks about what they want just because they're so forgettable. Neil just cries about being there and Nikki's lust for adventure is too open ended to know what she wants specifically.

I sometimes think about stuff that I think, would improve the show if I was writing it. I came up with this idea of having Nikki go to CampCampbell because of a supposed treasure that's hidden there. Even with that little bit of world building and character motivation, I feel that the story would be more interesting than it already is. Maybe Max needs the treasure too for some reason, which is why he chooses to stay for the rest of the show. idk, I'm just writing whatever pops into my head.

Going back to why I even wrote this whole thing in the first place. The reason why I'm so harsh on CampCamp is because I know RoosterTeeth can do better than what these first two episodes have been. I know because I've seen it in Ten Little Roosters and even some seasons of RedVs Blue. MAYBE IF I TYPE IN CAPS ROOSTER TEETH WILL RETURN WITH THE GLORY IT ONCE HAD.I don't even know if anybody will read this. Hopefully, you enjoyed reading me ramble on and on about a fictional camp.

    Fuck David,

RWBY episode 1 was fantastic, so I don't know what you mean when you say people drop it after the first couple episodes. If anything, the show gets worse and worse as the volumes progress

. At least in Rwby, the world feels like some thought was put into it. The setting in CampCamp is so forgettable, the only signature location i can remember is the flagpole. The Flag Pole.

Take a show like Total Drama Island, or Gravity Falls as an example for great settings in a cartoon series. Just like CampCamp, the two are both set in forested settings.with nature taking a big role in the series, What makes Total Drama Island and Gravity falls' settings so interesting is the various recurring locations that the characters visit during the show, Places like the Mystery Shack or bonfire pit are just a couple examples of locations that have a memorable designs or purpose. In CampCamp, most of the backgrounds look lazily thrown together and uninspired.

Typically, a show treats the setting like a character itself, taking time to introduce us to the main backdrop of the entire series. Why couldn't CampCamp treat Camp Cambell like this? Instead of introducing the setting with boring ass backgrounds of trees and cabin interiors, why couldn't they make a few landmarks that make Camp Cambell feel like a real place??

Being someone who has been to a summer camp, maybe introducing the building where the campers sleep would be a good start. Maybe even a mountain that drops off into the lake like TDI, idk.

Having a few well designed areas for the characters to be in can do wonders for a story, as the location is just as important as a main character.

    • Latriea

First off almost all of your complaints will most likely be solved as episodes keep coming out. Funny how no other places are memorable when only 2-3 episodes have come out on a short web cartoon. Characters are one dimensional until they are focused on. Take almost any cartoon with a large cast, for example total drama island. We met all the characters and basically until later in the show they were basic stereotypes. Until those characters show up in more situations all we know is the stereotypes they are meant to portray.

Also as my own opinion, the treasure idea would turn the show away from the silly old styled cartoons they were trying to follow in the first place. By all means write your own idea's because if anything that plot will most likely show up as its common for shows such as this.

This is a cartoon about campers and silly situations they get in. If you came for a deeper story with twists and turns then you are in the wrong place. For now anyways.

Rooster Teeth is evolving as more people join the company. Its opened up to have things for anyone to enjoy. If anything they are becoming even better.

      David's the best.

@Latriea Really? You're okay with them poorly establishing the setting and characters in the first episode? I guess it's something you get used to when you watch a bunch of anime.

I don't know about you, but I'm typically not one of those "I'll see if it gets better" kind of people. If the first episode of something sucks, then it's likely that the following stuff will suck too.

It's certainly possible that the setting and characters may get slightly better going forward, but that's not my point. My point is how can people like this show based on these first two bad episodes? Shouldn't the beginning of something be a hook to grab the viewers attention? Shouldn't the first few episodes give a taste of whats to come? First impressions are a huge thing after all. Not only did the first episode fail to make me care for most of the main cast, but it also didn't entertain me enough for me to say I enjoyed watching. If this is what I can expect from the upcoming episodes, then I don't have much faith for it to turn it around for me.

Regarding your comment on Total Drama Island and the characters in the series. Don't you think it's a little unfair to compare CampCamp's 4 main characters with TotalDrama's 24 character introduction? Although Total Drama Island had more screen time, there was 86% more people to introduce in TDI than in CampCamp. The only reason why I even compared the two series is because the two are both set in summer camps.

Addressing your issue with the treasure idea... How is making it less like an old styled cartoon a bad thing? Although I admire a good homage to a genre of entertainment, shouldn't making a quality episode or series be the top priority?

It sounds like you're saying: "It's supposed to be a little shitty, because that's what they were going for"

No, just like the shitty AVGN movie, a piece of media shouldn't be praised just because it's a homage to a certain type of entertainment. If something sucks, it should be open to criticism.

Again, hopefully you enjoyed reading this and I hope you can at least see why I don't like this show as much as you, Judging from all of these downvotes, not a lot of people have the same opinion as me and I hope I explained my side good enough for people. I just wish somebody could explain why they disagree with me, rather than just downvote my comments. Oh well, at least this was fun to write. :)

It was interesting to see others views in the show since there is a majority of people showing how much they enjoy it. If anything the only problem I felt was the way you worded your response to me. The dig at watching a bunch of anime seemed like an attempt at an insult, even more so when not once did I mention anything to do with anime. You and I are both strangers after all.

When it comes down to the first episode. This is the premise they are going for. As you have seen the demographic was made for all the people who are enjoying the show in the first place. They are not focusing on people with opinions such as your own. In that case they have succeeded in their goal of making a show that people will enjoy.

Also with the segment on TDI, this was more or less to provide an example on how your comment on one dimension characters is flawed in the first place. It seems me trying to let you down nicely has cause you to misread my words into thinking i'm saying "its supposed to be a little shitty." I was attempting to word it in a way to nicely say... This is not your show. Maybe you will enjoy it with time but I highly doubt that. The things you dislike about it are either things no one really notices/cares about or things people actually enjoy. As such.. Have a nice day. We will enjoy this while your gone.
(You don't have to really go or whatever. I really couldn't care less. It just felt like a good way to end the message owo")

@Latriea I guess you're right when you say they've catered to the demographic they were trying to please. Even so, this show is still a mess and the fact that people enjoy it doesn't make it good.

Just look at Sword Art Online as an example of a show with a huge fan-base, and an incredibly flawed story. For more info on why sword art sucks, please watch this video of Digibro's on the first season.

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uON7ANNOi4

He covers a lot for why I don't like the show, in a way that's easy to follow. But I'm getting off track.

I think you misunderstood what I had a problem with, when I said the characters were one dimensional and boring. I was talking about the kids that aren't the main three. If you happen to read this, could you please clarify why you think my comment was flawed and which comment it was exactly? I'm not trying to be unreasonable, I just want to know what why you feel the way you do. If you convince me how I'm wrong, I'll happily shut up.

Though, I still wonder why the heck you go to Total Drama Island as a comparison to CampCamp's characters . In TDI, all 24 characters are main characters in themselves and the bulk of them establish their personalities well in the first episode. On top of that, the first episode is also still entertaining because we get hints and interactions within the cast that shows how they'll treat each other as the series goes on. (It also introduces the island extremely well, and what the rules of the show are, but I digress)

In CampCamp, the cast is split up into like three categories that have varying levels of importance.

The primary characters(Max, Neil, Nikki, and David.)

The secondary characters (Gwen, Mr Campbell, and the Quarter Master)

The rest of them (Hitler kid, space kid, big kid, girl wit headphones kid, guys who kidnap Max, Girl scout kids)

So I don't know why you say your comparison demonstrates how my position is flawed. Again, I hope you can explain this to me. Total Drama and CampCamp have very different casts, It's like comparing Apples to Oranges.

Once again, thanks for reading this to the end and I hope you respond to this Latriea. It's not like I wanted to dislike this show going into it, I consider myself a fan of Roosterteeth for god sake.

It's just whenever I see people enjoy something I don't, I feel obliged to express why I see things differently. I apologize for the anime comment btw, I shouldn't have assumed something like that. After all, I have Tracer as my profile pic and I don't even play overwatch. ^.^

@PasvSmkng lol I don't know man, independent animators typically take a while to dish out content that's high quality, and I don't know if I could take on that workload. ^.^ Besides, I'm going to university in a few months so I may not even have the time to sleep.

Anyhow, thank you for not insulting me, like others that are so quick to do.

    • Latriea

The flaw is just like you mentioned with TDI. What your complaints are is like comparing apples to oranges. This is not the show you are trying to shoot it down for not being. There is still much we don't know as only 2 episodes are out for the large number of free viewers.

People like what they like. If a large number of people like something, it's not bad to them. The others are in the minority. In cases like this who is the one in the wrong? The vast amount of people who enjoy the thing or the few people who don't. It all boils down to opinion. You can dislike something sure, but if you need to go to such efforts to complain about it without keeping an open mind and accepting that others views are different then yours, then there's a flaw.

The reason I'm using TDI as an example is mostly because you mentioned it earlier. I didn't want to bring in references that you might not understand. No reason to have you go through such lengths just for a reply such as mine.

Until the other characters get their moment to shine you the viewers are exactly like the two new kids. New to the camp and slowly learning who everyone is without going around talking to everyone, finding people who do that normally is rare in this day and age.

In short, Used TDI because you mentioned it and I didn't want to bring in other shows without knowing if you knew them. The flaw was that the characters being one dimensional at the start is normal for shows like this. Thinking its bad for doing so is flawed if this is the way it was supposed to be, and is obviously working. Finally the part where you mentioned that the show is a mess to you and the fact that people enjoy it doesn't mean its good. This is an argument of opinions and will most likely never have an answer to please both sides. All you can do is agree to disagree.

Sorry if it what i'm saying seems a little scatter brained. I'm more or less writing everything that appears in my head instead of drafting out and making a clear and cohesive statement.

    • CefnSB

@IrraticDrop Thanks for putting out your opinion however divisive it may be. I think the rush to label things as "flame bait" is pretty harsh and in actuality it's done whenever the user posts something the majority do not agree with. I for one disagree with you and I very much enjoy the show but I can see that you have issues with it. Maybe it will get better as time goes on for you, but it doesn't really matter because you like all of us care about Rooster Teeth and knows that they will continue to make good content wherever they go.

I just hope people become a little more polite around here as people get so personal when someone disagrees with them or dares to say they found something not up to their expectations.

Camp Camp, however, scratches my itch for both dumb and witty humour with fantastic writing, and I truly love the art style. This company has come so far it has me excited for the future. Love you guys.
