The Oscars Opposition - #1

Enjoy the Show: The Oscars Opposition - #1

Spoiler alert: no one cares who wins The Oscars. Most people don't even see the majority of the movies nominated. Instead, let's start "Enjoy the Show" off with a tradition that looks to celebrate movies we enjoyed this past year even if they weren't given a golden statue by people in tuxedos on a red carpet. Sit back, relax and enjoy the show.

19 minutes into the episode and I'm already sold that Maggie's is the best award show because they included a Best Choreographed Fight Scene category. I also completely agree with the winner.

Never watched screenplay but I really like this so far. Sometimes it feels like Jon is saying you can't enjoy a movie because it wasn't the best movie ever (not so much in this episode, mostly in the test episodes i.e. Jurassic World) but whatever I'll live. It seems like everyone is very passionate about this show and I look forward to seeing more. I just hope this show doesn't get the curse of AH when they talk about a celebrity, they pass away after, otherwise this will be a very sad year.

I wonder what happens if i leave an overall negative but respectful and not trollish comment?

Well, i love a good movie podcast. However, this is so far below the level of discussion, knowledge, and insight that i get from other places like Collider(Movie Talk, Nightmares, Jedi Council, TV Talk, Schmoedown, etc.) that i just can't enjoy it. Places like Collider or Screen Junkies have their finger on the pulse of the film industry daily. The personalities at these places have worked in the non-internet side of the entertainment industry for years in many diverse areas. They have the guy who played a large part in Space Ghost Coast to Coast and Metalocalypse for example, and that is just scratching the surface. Many of them are hilarious with a surprising number having past or current stand-up experience. They get real in house appearances from directors, stars, and people in the industry.

The level of discussion here in this show, combined with what seems like a very surface level of knowledge makes it so the great comedic talent the people here have is lost and the spirit of real film love and passion is non-existant. Its like listening to The Patch, but if the entire cast was people who only played Madden. It doesn't work. This feels like a movie podcast not made for movie fans.

It feels like a chore when watching this show. I have tried every episode and have yet to get through any of them except the one about Rogue One.

I LOVE Jon. I think he is hilarious. Ashley is awesome, such an inspirational woman, and Andy is great. Its just not working for me as a cohesive thing. That is honestly how i feel.

I think that FunHaus does a FAR better job in their movie podcasts. Each episode is entirely focused on one thing that everyone present has a good understanding of with one of them usually being passionate about it and one who is indifferent(but knowledgeable enough) with everyone else in between. If RT want's to do a film show, FunHaus should do it. Their style is different from the Screen Junkies or Collider style(the best), but they make it work and give meaningful discussion while not going to places they feel they don't have the knowledge base to go.

Also, my college(not a film school) is having an 11 hour screening tomorrow of half the best picture nominees(last week was the first half). They ran out of tickets and had to reserve a third theater. People do care about the Oscars and films like these. I am excited to see these films tomorrow. The sheer disrespect in this show and assumptious attitude that no one in their audience cares is a serious turn off. I can't believe this was green-lit in this state after those test episodes.

Deadpool didn't get a nomination for best action choreography? It wasn't an amazing movie, really just somewhat above average, but you can't deny the excellent choreography and stunt-work that went into, say, the final fight in the film. It was one of the movie's few notable positives.

I have to agree with Andy: Xmen: Apocalypse wasn't a great movie, but it was still an enjoyable one.

Also, the movie Ashley was thinking of was The Glimmer Man.  There's a scene in that movie where Steven Seagal pistol whip the shit out of a Russian mob guy in the most nonchalant way possible.  It's still one of my favorite guilty pleasure bad action movies.

That's fine, it's not a movie for everybody. But just think of it like this: it's simply a movie about reality, in all its sad harshness. A man is dragged back to his hometown, one with which he has a horrifically traumatic past that he can't escape from or cope with, and in the end loses his struggle to overcome his obstacles because that's just how life is sometimes. He's just a stubborn and emotionally-inarticulate average guy who can't healthily deal with conflict, and we simply get a snapshot of his sad and ultimately broken life.  It's uncompromisingly honest and realistic, no matter how hard that may be to watch.  That's at least a large part of what I took away from it, besides the brilliant writing, stellar acting, purposeful editing, unique score and just all-around mesmerizing tone.

Hmm. Was hoping it would be a little more in depth of a show about the weekly releases or festival circuit stuff. As much as as it had its issues, I feel like Screen Play had a little more depth and room for discussion about film. The games and fun stuff I would enjoy if it was in addition to a more focused discussion.

I've seen everything nominated in every category other than one of the short documentaries for this years Academy Awards.. so I understand I may be a very specific niche of the audience.. but that's just my two cents.

Will continue to watch and give it a try

I loved the cinematography, music and editing of La La Land, but the plot was poor, a bit Hollywood masturbatory and a bit too pandering. I love Emma Stone, but I would have like an actress with a better voice in a musical like that. If you're going for the unexpected mainstream actress in a singing role surprise me like Reese Witherspoon in Walk the Line.

Great to see Andy on the show, his youthful exuberance brings a song to the hearts of the old and jaded (Is he one of the youngest of team rooster teeth, remember when Gavin and Michael were young).  Ashley was great too, keeping things on track, correcting the host when necessary and looking danged cute while she was doing it.

And someone please get Jon a hairbrush, something to get that mad tangle of hair under control. He's such an unkempt disgrace.

That's a fair point, but I personally thought it was far from a great movie. Loved the musical bits, but as Jon said in an earlier episode of this, it was like it stopped being a musical halfway through. After the planetarium scene, it felt like it was just trying to be a sappy movie, but not very well. Didn't feel like the movie had a clear direction.

I just thought it was lazy throughout. "HAH THE TACO IS A MEXICAN LESBIAN! The bagel is a nebbish Jew like Woody Allen!!" If you're going to do offensive comedy, do it right. (See: Blazing Saddles)

I would put Sausage Party up there as one of the worst movies I've ever seen. How they got the cast that they did astounds me. Like.. it's some Big Bang Theory level lazy writing.

You can do an R-Rated animated comedy right, though. It felt like Seth Rogen smoked some really good shit and wrote the movie with a mouthful of doritos.  If they'd dialed it back and actually wrote real jokes, it could have been funny as hell.
