I love Yamato 2199; it was in some sort of licensing hell in the US for a while, but as soon as Funimation got the license, they went to dubbing it. Before that, there wasn't even an easily available DVD set in the US, and I had to buy an import from the Philippines that has English subtitles.

ALSO, there's a sequel series to 2199 coming out soon! Hopefully we get a simuldub on Funimation (and maybe cover it weekly on Fanservice? <.< )

Pretty sure Shounen, Shoujo, Seinen are all demographics and not really genres per se.

And I know most people have gotten tired of Isekai stuff, but I'm probably one of the few who still likes them. And by that I mean I'm a huge slut for them. With my favorite one having its 2nd season coming out in under a week from now, Overlord. Out of the hundreds of Light/Web novels I've read, Overlord is by far my favorite one. I just love the dark fantasy aspect of it with some comedic moments added in just makes it all the more fun for me. S1 was all setup, but S2 and on is where it really starts picking up.

Gray, my 5:30am anime at 5yo was TranZor Z , better known as Mangizer Z.

For Genres, I never classify things as shonen, shojo, or the like because they don't tell me much about the show just who it is for.  When I think about genres, I think of things that mecha, magical girl, martial arts, space opera, slice of life, etc.

I feel bad for Cole, I have an irrational fear of recommending shows and videos to people and having them not like them. I guess I feel like I will loose a person's trust a bit, or they they will no longer come to me for opinions and recommendations. Not that I think that the others should not give their honest opinion, that's whole point of Anime Book Club, but if I was in Cole's position I would personally be trembling with fear and anxiety. Also he really wanted people to talk about Rokka with, now most of them have completely lost interest in it.

Agreed, I just wish everyone saw it that way so I would not have to worry about "offending" others with my own recommendations. But that's my problem, and I need to get over it and not let the fear of other people's feelings affect my own.

And since we found out today that Fan Service is ending I wanted to thank you Cole, for helping make this Fan Service. I found out about many anime that I would have never heard about or watched, if it had not been for this show. It was a fun ride.

As a suggestion (if you guys are still taking those or for anyone), I think Shin Sekai Yori (From the New World) would be a great watch individually but an amazing show to discuss because it has so many different intricate pieces. I wish I had someone to talk to about it when I was watching it. It came out in 2012, I think, and has 25 episodes. I know a few people have suggested it before, and I don't think you guys have ever talked about it. Shin Sekai Yori is a sci-fi mystery with a lot of psychological elements. I also want to say that it is a sort of twisted slice of life, but I'm not great at describing genres. I don't want to explain too much because I think that the series is best to go into blind. -Thanks for reading

I think Cowboy Bebop shares Firefly's setting (sort of) and humor. While Black Lagoon shares more of the themes.

Isekai's deconstructed so much because it's TOO POPULAR. Personality-less guys getting transported to another world where they become OP and build a harem is the easiest way to get views on the self publishing light novel site that all these adaptations are coming from. So much so that I think they banned submitting stories like that unless it's even slightly different... but apparently not enough, since from what I can tell, there are still pretty few innovative takes on isekai as a whole and more on just how to finagle their powers and setting so it seems unique (but still about a personality-less guys getting transported to another world where they become OP)

It's in that sense that I prefer the isekais where someone is reborn into the last dating sim (mostly otome ones) that they played as the side character or villainess. If you read a lot of them, yeah they follow the same formula, but there are SIGNFICANTLY FEWER of them so it's still FEELS fresh (and I am so sad that Bakarina still doesn't have her own anime yet)

Uncommon opinion (but widely agreed upon by everyone I've expressed it to) but not everything better is Josei, but everything Josei is better. Example, most MMO series are kinda "eh" at this point, but then MMO Junkie was a Josei take on it, and it was better

And Austin, there's an old.. 80's? 90's? anime called Irresponsible Captain Tylor. I haven't finished it yet, but it's basically a serious space opera except with a protagonist of a comedy

EDIT: Oh right, suggestions for next season... Well a lot of the Winter stuff are sequels or not discussion-worthy. Like, I'm definitely looking forward to Cardcaptor Sakura, but that means people following along with the book club would need to read/watch CS. Pop Team Epic is another one that would be fun to watch in a group but like... how would you even discuss that. I'm pretty sure it doesn't even actually exist. But the Spring season definitely has some good series.

I think the best one for a week to week book club would be Golden Kamuy. It's about a surviving soldier of the Russo-Japanese War who was dubbed "Sugimoto the Immortal" (accurate, as the key to being immortal is not to die) who meets an Ainu girl and band together to hunt for escaped convicts that have pieces of a treasure map tattooed on them. Learn about the Ainu culture, enjoy the action, and laugh at the hijinks of a colorful cast of characters all at the same time. I guess if you like Drifters' comedy in the serious action, it's similar to that, but this does it much MUCH better.

Hinamatsuri is an amazing manga, and I'm excited for the anime adaptation, but it's not exactly a book club anime since it's mostly episodic stories. It's the daily life of a yakuza dad and his piece of shit adopted psychic daughter

Mahou Shoujo Ore is a rollercoaster. IT'S BEEN LIKE 4 YEARS SINCE THEY ANNOUNCED THIS AND I AM SO HAPPY THEY ARE FINALLY DOING IT like holy shit. The manga's already finished btw. I DARE you guys to try to talk about this. It might even make a good ____ Explains

...but maybe not, because the people who watch it need to know what's going on first...

Holy shit there's actually a lot of good Spring anime... idk if I'm going to watch them, but for people who read the comments, here's a list of some of the stuff I'm looking forward to... putting on my Plan To Watch list but never getting to

    Wotaku ni Koi wa Muzukashii

    Piano no Mori

    Dances with the Dragons

If you want oldies, Yssa mentioned it last episode, but Angel Beats is amazing. It's far from perfect, but nevertheless I always cry when I watch it

Tatami Galaxy is pretty great. 11 episodes. It's difficult to watch because of how fast paced it is, but it's definitely worth it. It's about a guy and his pursuit towards a rose colored college life

Man I want to suggest so many things, but I read more manga and do not watch enough of their anime adaptations to definitely do so...

I like at this point they are all seem to be hate-watching Rokka, or in Austin's sort of nihilism zone.  By this point I was just rooting for the Demon King. I hope Miles is back next week for the finale to hear his thoughts on it.

Edit - Also, I was going to suggest a non-school slice of life in Barakamon.  But when I think about it, I'm pretty sure I got the recommendation from an earlier episode of Fan Service.  Whatever, go watch Barakamon.  Its about calligraphy and an adorably precocious child.

What I thought about Rokka was that you weren't supposed to be able to predict through facts and foreshadows but rather what would make for the best story, if that makes any sense. I think what made them dislike it so much is they were looking for something that's not there. Given just that, it's an alright show. But, even so, that last episode is definitely something. Can't wait for them to talk about that one!

One genre that doesn’t have very many shows is mystery. The last mystery shows I have seen are, From the New World, Re;Zero, Higurashi (for one season) and Monster (the last “pure” mystery show). And no, Erased is not a mystery. After all, there was only one possible suspect.

Gray, there are a couple of older isekai shows that are on the serious side. For example, “Now and Then, Here and There” is a slightly sloppy attempt at a serious isekai show. In the show, a child is kidnapped into a new world, and forced to become a child soldier. The show has one of the more gut-wrenching scenes in anime, when it focuses on a girl who was forced into sex slavery. 12 Kingdoms is another example of a beloved isekai show, except for the fact that it ends with a “read the light novel” ending, and somehow manages to have 6 recap episodes. A girl is brought to a new world in order to become the king of one of the titular 12 kingdoms. The anime follows her and a few other women.

Austin, there are shows that fit the bill. “Yosuga no Sora”, and “Koi Kaze”. Sora is hit or miss with people (as evidenced by the fact that I got it in a Rightstuf blindbox), but there is definitely fucking, and it is a harem (standard story, no need to explain). Koi Kaze is a bit more on the hit side. It is about a aimless man who falls in love with his sister. I saw it on a few “greatest romance” lists so some people love it.

In terms of anime next season, I am looking forward to Basilisk: Ouka Ninpouchou. Basilisk is a continuation of a previous anime of the same name. It is basically a Romeo and Juliet story featuring supernatural Ninjas. Overlord Season 2 is on the way. Overlord is an isekai show where our protagonist is roleplaying a bad guy.

Honestly I really enjoyed Rokka. I get when Grey says it's predictable, but I have yet to watch anything that wasn't predictable to me and that's across all media. I watched Rokka all the way through when they first mentioned it last season and enjoyed it. I didn't fully expect the 7th to be who it was but I knew it wasn't Adlet, Fremy, Goldof, or Hans because they seemed liked too obvious of choices and I was right.

@SH_Gubbins, I am thinking about selling it when it's done, but have no idea for how much. First time I've done such a project. So far it's literally been 80 hours of sketching, 20-ish hours of lining and over 150 hours of colouring (since I'm primarily using a 2mm brush, FML, I know). Sadly there is not a easy way of pricing this 'behemoth' haha. If anyone wants to give me a ballpark estimate of what it's worth? That would be great.

Land of the Lustrous is visually amazing. I was worried with how they would capture it from the manga, but it went beyond expectations.

Probably more incredible than the way the characters look is how expressive their faces are. (Pho is adorable.)

But if all these gem shows just turn out to be a long complicated way to get people to by actual gems as merch... I'm gonna need a second mortgage, because it's working.

With the trapped in a video game genre, just as I thought I was getting burnt out on it I picked up a light novel I expected not to like.

'So I'm a Spider, so what?'

The short of it is an entire classroom is killed by a battle happening in another world and are reincarnated into that world. (A world where video game elements are just a part of live, such as levels and skills)

The hook came immediately as the main girl it follows hatches from an egg as a spider and is immediately thrown into a survival of the fittest situation where everything is out to kill her. Monsters for food, humans because she's a monster.

Watching her work out how to use her spider-ness to take down other monsters for food, along with her levelling up, gaining new ideas and skills just makes you root for her and feel excited to see her grow to take down stronger opponents like you would when you gain levels in an rpg yourself.

It's got a bit of a dark humour to her method of killing, and picturing the spider making 'come at me gestures' when she gets confident makes me hope this gets an anime some day.

Anyways, great novel and I can't wait for further volumes.
