Let Me Clarify: Animal Relationships - #0.4

Some animals keep mates but do they ever break up?  And, why do we have no more than 4 limbs?  Sally Le Page clarifies the dumbest science questions Gus can think of in the fourth pilot episode of Let Me Clarify.

I think an interesting question to discuss is, why aren't there creatures (vertebrates) with six or more limbs? Like say, all those fancy mythological creatures with four limbs and a set of wings. Heck, any discussion on the pseudo-biology of mythological creatures would be interesting. (Are there six limbed vertebrates? Were there ever six limbed vertebrates? Why do we like imagining creatures with six limbs?)

    • DocNameless FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Well, she answers that our progenitors in evolution from fish to tetrapods had the bone structure of only 4 limbs so that's why we don't have more than 4 limbs and do not see any vertebrates with additional limbs. The development of extra limbs would require extra bone structure, which the fish we are theorized to evolve from didn't have the formation of bones to support such extra limbs.

    • Nicowl FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Sometimes vertebrate foetuses will have mutations which lead to development of extra limbs, however they are never viable and they die before they are born. Because the genes which control limb development also control or help control other functions in the body (Hox genes), mutations can mess up the whole organism so that it cannot survive.
The evolution of extra limbs in vertebrates is highly unlikely, if not impossible. Four limbs is plenty, and it's far easier to adapt a limb (like bats evolving their arms into wings) or lose them altogether (snakes, whales, dolphins).
So no winged horses or dragons, but unicorns and wyverns should be okay ;)

      Wyverns are still cool!

  • DocNameless FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Not to rain on everyone's parade of wanting a tail, but there is probably a reason for the evolutionary advantage of no longer having a tail.

    1. If we had tails, we would probably need an extra portion of the cerebral cortex needing to be dedicated to the functions of a tail. So we could either use a portion of the brain that we use for higher levels of thinking or have an even bigger skull. So pick dumber or looking strange so then you aren't attractive to the opposite sex. Oh man, I didn't even think about the fact that the tail would most likely reflect a similarity to our cuticle (skin) of being non-keratinized (hairless) so it would look absolutely disgusting.

    2. I would think that possibly evolution probably drove us to not having tails because those with tails could get stuck on something when fleeing from a predator.

    • AmmeGrace FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

If I remember my bio classes correctly, our lack of tails has a lot to do with how we stand and walk, so our posture would have to change a lot to accommodate, which has a lot to do with the spread of humanity (please don't make my dig out my hs bio book guys please)

but the brain power/aesthetics thing only matters if tails are new, if we kept them from the start then whatever we looked like with a tail would define the qualities for sexual attractiveness.

hair could probably go either way, the hair on our heads is there for protection from the sun, and pubic hair (that was originally connected to the rest of out hair, cool right?) became useful for sanitary reasons (and some say pheromones?). But that could mean that a tail that gets a lot of direct sunlight might benefit from fur/hair, but it might have the texture of pubes....

But it's important to remember that evolution is a C student, it does the minimum it needs to get a species to keep going, that's why there are vestigial organs, and why we don't have tails or camouflage (I mean, I'd rather octopus skills than a tail)

    • DocNameless FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Posture doesn't necessarily lead to spread of humanity. There is plenty of reproduction and movement of organisms that do not have similar posture as humans.

Fair enough rebuttal for my 1st point, however I was referring to the desire of Gus to have the genetic engineering to obtain a tail.

Hair is actually an adaptation that functions more in response to desiccation (drying out) not directly from protection from sun. Sun will lead to desiccation, but when you have evolved such dynamic systems (as humans) to retain water if needed, the addition of a tail would most likely not have hair.

And your last paragraph, exhibit A: "2. I would think that possibly evolution probably drove us to not having tails because those with tails could get stuck on something when fleeing from a predator."

AmmeGrace actually nailed it on the head, in a way, but its a little more complicated,
Humans never had tails, nor did our direct ancestors, not even as far back as Australopithecus Afarensis , we are taught in biological anthropology, that it was common ancestor in the great-ape superfamily, that lost its tail.
The proconsul africanus, of about 25million yrs ago, was were the hominoid branch showed (for now, this is soft science after all) the first sign of the loss, and the general consensus for that evolutionary trait, it is due to being bipedal, (it got in the way of standing-up, and offsetting balance during locomotion) and predators had very little to do with it.
In fact another widely held theory is the hominid subclass became as upright as were are to be the best predator... not to avoid them.

    • DocNameless FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I was referring to her comment that her statement "posture...has a lot to do with the spread of humanity" isn't necessarily an accurate since many species have tails that have the ability to migrate & spread across the land.

Jaynut, I admit you are right about loss of tail probably not due to avoiding predators. I was just trying to make a general point about it leading to increased survival. However, becoming bipedal doesn't necessarily make one more predatory especially since arguably being quadrupedal increases speed and greater ability to be a predator.

    • RiverRunning

It's also worth bearing in mind that most of the larger "cousins" of humans (Gorilla's etc.) don't really have tails either and given the Gus wanted a tail for swinging from tree to tree with points out the problem... there are many fewer branches that hold our sort of weight; there are few (taking all species of tree into account) types of tree that grow that size or greater of branches; even fewer that grow close enough together to be able to swing between them; being our size means there are many fewer holes between branches we can fit through to swing; the extra weight of a tail that can function like an arm but be built like a tail (very differently) means it might not be very dextrous or even possible at all (the extra weight of humans might exceed the elastic limit of some of the organically possible tissues needed - the reason you don't get Blue Whale-sized animals on land)...

So even a well evolved and reproductively success group of tailed early humans would potentially be more limited in agility on the ground and very, very limited in territory they could cover not on the ground. Getting between territories might be impossible or very difficult and that would lead to inbreeding (which is disastrous for many species). However in the case of a group in the old Redwood forests there would be less of an issue, but a second problem arises. Humans potentially succeeded _because_ they "came down from the trees" and evolved to be plains runners, able to cross and live in any land that wasn't too extreme (e.g. Antartica, the Sahara and Gobi deserts) and have access to a much wider variety of prey (food) which meant they had the energy to maintain the energy requirements of their larger brains. They could also track down prey that changed environments to try to shake off their predators (e.g. flying fish -sea to sky-, hippos -savannah to river-)... the best thing they could do would be to evolve to become smaller tailed humans or loose their tails

TLDR; tailed humans exist - they're called lemurs and squirrels (and many others) - but the big ordinary kind are stuck on the ground because they are just too damned heavy and need to eat too much.

Very good points RiverRunning. Especially since the scapula in primates is not arranged like it is in predatory cats (first thing I thought of), which is more advantageous for quadrupedal running.

@CptObvious1994 I kinda just assumed it was something to do with being Sally's show as well as RT's show, so she'd want her fans to be able to watch it, or felt like learning should be a free experience. I don't think it's been commented on yet though, so don't take my thought as gospel.

It does make sense to show this on YT though even as a pilot to get as many viewers as possible to judge if it will become a show. Sally will bring viewers that RT doesn't normally have so it is a better way of judging popularity.
