RT Animated Adventures: Airport Dog Jobs

After encountering a dog whose job is to sniff for food, Burnie wonders how cushy a job that dog must have compared to other dog jobs. I just like saying dog job over and over. Dog job.

A TSA-adventure story from my brother-in-law who is a military guy. He gets back from training with a bunch of other guys. They're in the cameo, with luggage, carrying ID and everything - straight from the Camp - where they'd been testing firearms, running drills - the works. They get to the airport and the TSA agent notifies him that there's traces of gunpowder on his bag and asks for an explanation...

Kid you not. Critical thinking is obviously not one of the requirements for a job in TSA.

went through airport security and the guy in front was being read the list of prohibited items (flammable, excess liquids) and he get's to the part about sharp objects and i reply: "oh I guess i'll leave my wit here then, and the guy ahead and the security guard both just gave me a sigh of disgust before continuing. old one, but classic :)

Had a similar experience to the dude who got checked twice. Saw a cute little dog while wearing a vest while i was waiting at the gate (said some shit like Pug patrol or Schnauzer squad). TSA agent asked me not to pet the dog, and then the little guy just sat on my shoe as we checked my bag. Airport lady got super pissed that the dog took a nap on my feet XD

That must suck for the guy that had to get his luggage checked twice. He must be saying in his mind "Goddammit why? I just had my bag checked."

I know it came off the wrong way, but Burnie has a totally valid point which leads me to wonder what makes these dogs actually different. Do they track only certain kinds of food or something?

This is a late reply. But yes. The dogs are specifically trained to sniff out prohibited foods like fruits, vegetables, meat, and plants, and other things seen as bio security threats. New Zealand in particular is incredibly pedantic about what types of food you're allowed to bring into the country. In fact, we're so worried about our ecosystem being destroyed by outside threats being brought in, that you even have to declare if you've been in a forest recently while overseas, and they will honestly check the soles of your shoes to ensure you aren't bringing any soil back.

Yeah, here in Tassie they make a bit of a fuss over it, we don't want any of that mainland food coming down here.

Just think, there's a country so peaceful and perfect that the only thing dogs ever find being smuggled is food.

    • persimelinoe

Mexico had that when we got off a cruise from the US. It was sniffing for produce, cause discarded produce remains can have invasive parasites.

What's the purpose of a dog that sniffs for food? Can you not bring your own food to the airport anymore? Know you can't get through the checkpoint with bottled water, but this is news to me. Granted it's been several years since I've flown.

You'd think they'd have these dogs at the movie theaters.

They said New Zealand, we have very strict laws about what food can be brought into the country (to protect our ecology, we have a lot of very endangered birds, and plants etc, and we mostly export crops. we need to protect our ecology. Anything that can potentially harm any of this has to be eliminated)

It's very normal to see dogs in airports sniffing for food here. Some food is allowed in (usually pre-packaged snacks. However no fresh fruit etc) but bringing undeclared food items into New Zealand is usually met with fines.

they dont want people bringing like plants that are banned from the country. like here in the US we had an issue with flower that overgrew and killed a bunch of indinginish flowers here. so...just that with food i guess

    • Abiss

some places have it as a way to stop foreign species of plants from accidentally taking root and potentially competing with / harming the native species

To add to what everyone else has said, they'll also make sure you're not carrying food while travelling internationally in order to prevent the spread of plant/meat borne pathogens. If you're just wandering about an airport, a dog's not gonna bother you, but once you're at customs or baggage claim they'll be wandering around to make sure you haven't brought anything suspicious with you.

Even though in the states dogs are generally trained for more lethal things, if a member of the tsa thinks you've brought food with you, you can bet they're gonna take it, and the dogs will sometimes notice stuff like that--I once went through the Philadelphia (or maybe JFK?) airport with my mom and a sniffer beagle came to check out her bag, apparently attracted not by anything dangerous but by the smell of a bottle of juice concentrate that had broken open in transit.

The easiest example of this is bringing fruit in to certain parts of Australia as the fruit can contain fruit fly eggs or larvae which would heavily damage our fruit growing industry.

Yeah, I guess certain foods have customs issues in various countries. As an American, I find it odd to not allow certain foods into another country. Although, given the laws about censorship I've vaguely heard about in Australia and New Zealand, it doesn't surprise me they'd have other strict regulations for importing and such.
I always have a bag of beef jerky and a pack of gum with me when I fly and usually I buy a small meal by the gate. I've never flown internationally so I hope I can do that in most places.

Before they put food dogs in movie theaters they might wanna even up security against the people that sneak in emergency exits.

(P.S. whoever negative modded you for not understanding something like this is just rude)

Every single time there is a sniffer dog, no matter what it's trained to find, it will indicate that I have something. Every single time. I spent my whole life around dogs and still spend a lot of time around them so maybe the dog smells the other dogs on my trousers mr policeman. No? you want to search everything AGAIN even though you've seen me three or four times with the same dog now? Really? Well sure, why not. You won't find anything again this time!

Best thing is when they sniff your hand and indicate. Why yes mr policeman, I've just eaten the meatiest burger from BK and your dog is a Labrador. IT WILL INDICATE.

    Sigh....
