I thought The End were not just "people who were wronged" but those that were killed for religious reasons.... well I guess they were all betrayed by their people

Not quite all of them. It seems like it's either religion or politics that play into their deaths, but ultimately it's a betrayal that connects all of them, or in one guy's case his own act of betrayal. I think Joan and Not-Jesus being so prominent made the religion angle stick to people's minds.

Nobunaga Oda, Joan of Arc, Leonardo DaVinci, Magellan, and King Arthur walk into a script together, and the director looks at all of them and says "The Only way this is going to make sense, is if you let me add Gundams."  That is Nobunaga the Fool.

    • farson135 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Fair warning, that question is a little problematic because the series, the first two movies, and the prequels are not really in the same continuity. It doesn't really matter which continuity you start with, just stick to the order within each continuity.

You should probably start with the 1995 Ghost in the Shell movie and then you can watch the Innocence movie.

After that you can watch Stand Alone Complex season 1 and 2. Then the movie Solid State Society.

After all of that, you have the Arise prequels, followed by the movie, ingeniously titled, Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie.

I'm gonna say, Miles, if you love the world and worldbuilding of GitS, you'll probably enjoy Stand Alone Complex. It was my first brush with the universe and a lot of those concepts, so, y'know, it holds a special place for me, but it really is pretty high quality even if it takes it's own direction. It's definitely more... serial, I guess, which makes sense for a TV series - SAC is even divided into "stand alone" and "complex" episodes in its first season - Stand Alone being just that, a wholly episodic story about cyberterrorism or philosophy, and then complex is the over-arcing story about philosophy of cyberterrorism and existential crisis that you'd expect from something under GitS. I don't have a lot of experience with it in japanese, but the dub is really good in my opinion. Plus, great score. 2nd Gig gets a little more complex and weird (and then the movie Solid State Society is even weirder and convoluted) but It's still a solid cap as it's own universe. Also, you gonna cry like a baby toward the end of each season. I guarantee.

So, here's my thoughts on Drifters. The coming conflict between Toya's group and the Black King's is manufactured by the people around them. The dark entity in pushing for Joan and Giles attack and the Octoberists telling the Drifters that the Ends want nothing but would destruction (which may have been true before the Black King). However, both groups are essentially working toward the same goal. The Black King wants to free the Demi-human races from slavery and oppression and the only reason he hasn't included the Dwarves or Elves is because he hasn't made it that far in to Orte yet. Toya's group is doing the same thing from inside the empire. The only difference and possible source of conflict would be Nobunoga wanting to rule through Toya rather than give it over to the people.

I'm going to write out a fan theory I have for Drifters, because I have nowhere else to type this.

I don't believe that the Black King is Jesus, I think it's Lucifer.

From their description of an End, an End is somebody who feels like they were wronged by humanity. Yet Jesus willingly gave his life to wipe away our sins.

Lucifer on the other hand, now that is somebody who would feel like he was wronged by humanity. Sent away to another dimension inhabited by kobolds and goblins and dragons by God as punishment for speaking out against humans, Lucifer has every reason to hate humans.. He feels like they are below him, like he was cast out because of them, and so wants to wipe out the scourge. But he knows his time is short (as said in the show). So he shows the "monsters" of this world how to grow food, how to communicate with one another, and how to worship one religion, not only so that they can be stronger for it, but so that when the time of the Black King ends, his minions will continue to eradicate humanity, forever keeping this world clean.

Now Lucifer, forever scorned by what God did to him to protect his creation, adopted the name that the humans called Jesus, the Savior, and used it for himself, constructed a new personality called the Black King, who has one goal. To wipe out humanity.

    • lion13forus FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Cool idea honestly, except that Lucifer was an angel and all drifters so far have been humans. Understand that from the show's Japanese perspective, Jesus was simply a powerful human profit. Him dying for our sins is then a mistruth in this story. Therefore, in this version of history Jesus was betrayed by humanity not sacrificed.  Again, cool theory though.

AFAIK the reason people had a problem with the end is because it took the concept 'attack on snowpiercer' and *cough* derailed it entirely. There was no longer a 'natural force' they were fighting and everything from then on just feels nonsensical. The fact that the series ends up having a bad guy is dumb enough, let alone one with such dumb backstory, motivation and actions as this Kabaneri's.

I may have said this last week, but between a showdown between history's greatest warriors and a show about gay ice skaters, I never guessed the gay ice skaters would hold my attention better.

I enjoyed Kingsglaive to some extent and I'm glad I got it, but it seemed to be the worst aspects of both previous FF movies. The boring, action-driven plot like Spirits Within while being as reliant on lore as Advent Children. You need the movie to understand the game but you need the game to understand the movie, and there's no clear place to start anywhere in the multimedia franchise

    • rohie FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Spirits Within was way less "action driven" than Advent Children, so that's a bit of an odd thing to say. Kingsglaive though, was a lot more story driven than basically either one of them, but especially more than Advent Children. Although "action driven plot" is more or less kind of a nonsensical way of describing anything to begin with.

Kingsglaive and the actual game itself are meant as starting points, and work perfectly fine as those. They don't spell out everything to you nor should they, but that doesn't change the aforementioned. Americans (or rather, westerners) have this weird habit of throwing a tantrum if absolutely everything is not spelled out for them at all times, so perhaps you're just suffering a bit from that?

    • DavidtheWavid FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Kupo!

@rohie Absolutely not. Kingsglaive was about this ring and the signing of the treaty. That was all it was about. All the crap with Nyx and Luna was just mindless crap. Luna's like "We make our own luck" or something about miracles and you're like "Oh, that'll come into play later" and Mr. 1-Dimensional later comes up and saves her and  barbaranyxes the whole thing like "that was no miracle, princess bitch!" and oh hey Ravus died. Oh wait no he's in the game. He got fucking disintegrated but no he only lost an arm.

    • rohie FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@DavidtheWavid The movie being about the Ring of the Lucii and the treaty does not change anything I mentioned, nor do I see the point why it should. "All the crap was just mindless crap" is a nonsensical way of describing anything and doesn't get anything across. The comment about miracles was about the Kingsglaive relying on the crystal's power and supposedly not being anything without its magic and why that really isn't the case - which does come into play and is a prominent theme in the movie. Nyx receives a decent amount of characterization despite being sort of a bystander protagonist in the movie. Ravus doesn't "die" any more than Nyx does when he first puts on the Ring of the Lucii.

    • DavidtheWavid FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Kupo!

@rohie All the STUFF with Nyx and Luna is unnecessary crap. Better?

It was written very poorly and none of the characters but Regis and Ravus got any development. Cowe was in like 2 scenes and died offscreen, and Mr. Tubby betrayed the kingdom to... save the kingdom? And then Nyx is fine with him causing the entire Kingdom to fall because he said he was sowwy. :(

There were one or two plot points, and the rest of the story was framed by the action. That's all I'm saying. That and the Final Fantasy team doesn't know how to tell a story in under 30 hours.

    • rohie FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@DavidtheWavid Completely missed the point with that. Saying something is just "completely crap" doesn't get anything across. The scenes with Nyx and Luna weren't pointless. Like I already said, they very much served one of the main themes of the movie.

It wasn't written very poorly, not at all. I sincerely doubt you've ever seen genuinely very poor writing if you actually thought that was it. All of the main characters get a decent amount of characterization, and the minor ones get their share as well. Crowe (and her fate) is meant to be more of a catalyst for other characters' development rather than the alternative. Libertus "betrays" the Kingsglaive due to Crowe's fate (as mentioned already) and the peace treaty screwing over the members of the Kingsglaive. He then snaps out of it, essentially, after learning Drautos's true identity (his arc goes actually quite well with Drautos's character in general and contrasting it as well as Drautos obviously never "snapped out of it"). Libertus didn't single handedly cause Lucis's downfall, and his actions are a pretty understandable emotional knee jerk reaction to the situation he's in. Nyx can' really be picky about his allies either, as at that point he's more or less fighting the Imperial invasion all by himself.

There were plenty of story beats the movie hits, especially in regards to how the peace treaty affects the various different parties involved - and given that the entire pre-existing premise that the movie is built on is "see Insomnia's downfall firsthand", obviously there is going to be a lot of action in addition to that as well. No such thing as "the Final Fantasy team" exists within Square Enix, nor is the movie made by the exact same set of people that made the game. The movie also very much delivers on telling a standalone story that also supplements the larger FF XV universe.

    • DavidtheWavid FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Kupo!

@rohie see, there's another inaccuracy. Kingsglaive was billed as an independent story, but if you watch just the movie there are so many questions going unanswered, and it ends so abruptly with no resolution. Luna just walks out of the city and Nyx is like "well I guess I'm gonna die now having accomplished pretty much nothing." The game doesn't explain what the ring is or what it does. The past kings don't even play a part in the game. It's not explained why Luna has it. These are NOT standalone experiences.

You can like it if you like it. It was enjoyable to a point. But The Phantom Menace had a good story too as you said. It was just executed terribly, as was Kingsglaive. I'm gonna watch it for the third time and if my opinion changes, I'll let you know.

    • rohie FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@DavidtheWavid No, there isn't an "another inaccuracy". Nor have there actually been a previous one either, as you just keep moving to a new point without further elaboration as I keep debunking your previous ones.

Kingsglaive is meant as (one of the) starting points for the universe, as well as having its own story arc it accomplishes. Obviously the movie leaves things unanswered, as it is only a part of a bigger story. But that isn't a bad thing (again, the previous comment about Americans throwing a tantrum when everything isn't spelled out for them in fiction) nor does it meant that it wouldn't have its own standalone arc, which it very much does have. The movie doesn't end even remotely abruptly (perhaps recheck the meaning of the word?) and gives closure to the characters and the story arc portrayed in the movie.

Luna "just walks out of the city" because getting her out of the city and to safety was a major goal of the heroes in the movie (bit of a nonsensical way of wording that on your part). Nyx accomplishes killing Glauca (a major antagonist in the movie and in the bigger universe as well) as well as not having the Ring of the Lucii fall into enemy hands, which is the other major goal of the movie for the heroes. The game very much does explain the ring as being something you can channel the power of the kings through, and thus use a more unusual type of magic. The past kings play a part both indirectly in the game's backstory as well as directly in its ending. Luna has the ring because she was in the capital when the invasion happened and Regis got killed.

A Star Wars prequel trilogy comparison, how original. Kingsglaive was executed completely fine, and the SW prequel trilogy comparison is pretty hilariously misguided, if you actually think that. You can dislike the movie all you want, because of course you can - different strokes for different folk. But regardless, that doesn't still make your points true.

    • DavidtheWavid FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Kupo!

@rohie I still stand by everything I said. It was not a wel-written or narratively enjoyable movie. It was beautiful trash. Yeah, it's part of a bigger story. That would be great Tabata hadn't repeatedly said it's a standalone story. There is no good entry point for the 15 series. They're all interwoven. Brotherhood introduces the snake lady that nearly killed Noctis but also spoils Regis's death. Platinum Demo doesn't say why Noctis was injured and neither does King's Tale. Kingsglaive is the initiating incident but the prologue has Noctis in a wheelchair and, again, doesn't explain it. Now sure, people want stories spoonfed to them and won't think critically about the larger themes and symbolism like Mass Effect. But telling fractions of a story in three games, a movie, and an anime with no clear-cut beginning is just idiotic. Bionicle had a massive multimedia franchise, but at least the first comic and first book and first cutscene of the first game showed the same event from thre different viewpoints, not in a flashback spoiling the end of the first story arc. That is a multimedia franchise done right. Not the interwoven canonical mess FFXV was.

That being said, I do love it all. Kingsglaive was just trashy action.

@DavidtheWavid Yet again, you're just moving on to making other points when the previous ones get flat out shot down. You standing by everything you said doesn't make it true, either.

The movie was well written, like I've already said, and you really haven't come across actually very poor writing or something that can genuinely be described as just "trashy action" if you actually think that was it. You also seem to be completely missing the point at what is being meant with a "standalone story", for it to be a completely standalone story, it then more or less couldn't even be a part of a bigger universe. What was meant with that statement is that the movie has its own story arc it goes through and accomplishes, as well as then tying into the larger universe as well. Which was all true.

Brotherhood doesn't flat out "spoil" Regis's death, and only gives it heavy foreshadowing - which, given that Regis's death is essentially something that's set up as a given thing in all of the media from the get go, is perfectly fine. Noctis being in a wheelchair and the reason for that isn't largely important for the story arc of Kingsglaive.

The FF XV universe does have two clear cut starting points, the movie and the game, the latter being the more obvious one - and being clearly presented as such by their respective directors. The different media don't tell a fraction of the same story arc, no. They each have their own distinctive story arcs that tie into the bigger universe and supplement each other. Like with all of your previous comments, all your points seem to stem from just a tantrum that you're not being spoonfed every single little thing (especially so the misunderstanding of what was meant with "standalone story"), or you just not paying to things that very much are explained in the media (or can be easily gathered up from it with common sense).
