Haus of Pain

RT Docs: Haus of Pain

Rooster Teeth’s James Willems plays video games for a living, but he still harbors an unfulfilled childhood dream: to become a pro wrestler. That all changes when James teams up with friend and co-worker Lawrence Sonntag to enroll in a Los Angeles wrestling school, create wrestling personas (“James Angel” and “The Troll”), and train for a tag team match against a pair of vicious pro wrestlers known as “HATE.” How far will James and Lawrence push themselves to achieve James’s dream? Do they have what it takes to wrestle a pro team and not get killed?

I've studied martial arts and boxing, but I could never attempt the sheer acrobatics these two performed. It was like they had springs on their feet. My mouth was quite literally agape a few times. I hope that Lawrence comes to a point where he can look back on this and know without a doubt that he made up 50% of his team. And James... yes, wrestling, but those eyes...

Did anyone else love the like, soft human moments between James and Elyse and between James and Lawrence after the eye cut?

Lawrence beating himself up in the doctor waiting room is the sweetest thing I've seen. I love how much he cares for James and Elyse.

One of my favourite videos Roosterteeth have produced in a very long time! Lawrence and James both did absolutely fantastically! I wish Lawrence wasn't so harsh on himself, he brought The Troll to life and absolutely fucking destroyed it, especially given his lack of wrestling knowledge and experience. Props to both of these awesome dudes!

Watching this was so much fun because I am a guy who's been in the business as a ring announcer/referee for three years now. I know that excitement they felt and I'm sure it felt awesome to take those bumps in front of the crowd!

as someone who worked in SAWF (South austrlian wrestling federation) for a short time i have to say, both lawrence and james have so much potential given what they could perfect in such a small time.

I'm a little jealous that roosterteeth has become the place for living any little stupid childhood dream you had-- and get paid for it.

    • AutumnOnFire FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold How may I be of service?

That's true, but that's also slightly the point. The documentary is made to look good for us so that we are happy and inspired and entertained. We don't get to see all the bruises, hard work, and mental effort it took for them to do these things. Sure we got glimpses, but we get an hour long peak while they have to do all that stuff for DAYS. So yes, it's their childhood dream, but don't forget that it took a tonne of effort that most people would give up on. Plus, it's not like they're paid any more. They made content just like anything else.

I'm late to this, and I don't know how I missed it, but it was great! Both of you guys did great, and it was cool to see. I get that Lawrence has his FunHaus self-deprecating character he has to maintain, but I hope he had more fun than he had to show for the documentary.

Awwh. I wish Lawrence was a little less harsh on himself, He did wonderfully! He sacrificed his pride (and his body) to give his friend his lifelong dream of being the spotlight star in the middle of the ring, if only for a few fleeting moments. This whole thing touched me, and the raw emotion sticks out so well. You can tell that they have formed an irreplaceable memory together.

I feel like the character of Lawrence was even stronger, than James'. James was good, but Lawrence really brought the troll out - the stance, the look, the voice - everything worked well. You guys both did great, had a lot of fun watching this. Keep it up :)

Wow, I can really relate to Lawrence. Not being super confident in your body or in your skills. But in reality Lawrence is amazing! Like dang. He looks amazing, and for someone who was never into wrestling, he got right into it and actually looked like a pro. I got a new found love for Lawrence, and I already loved him so. And of course James is great! This was epic.

Lawrence needs to stop beating himself up over nothing. The worst critic someone can have is themselves. I thought he was funny and they made a great tag team.

Never been able to really get into wrestling, even knowing it as a performance art and being a theatre kid myself. It's not for everyone. That said, this RTDoc was extremely fun and let me be that much more appreciative of this artform. It probably won't matter, but I think Lawrence did extremely well coming in from no former knowledge while James at least had a foundation. Best loss I've ever seen.
