Just got into RT Docs and I have to say they are really well done. That being said ASMR videos (while I have experienced the tingly sensation) are just a little too uncomfortable for me. Its just bizarre having strangers intimitaly whisper at you and look you in the eyes. The pure noise ones(like scratching a pencil or cutting hair) are still bizarre but definitely less unsettling haha

To be completely honest, ASMR bothers me, makes me uneasy and very, VERY irritable. I would never comment on a video, but the intermittent whispering, just makes me wanna punch the ASMR people. It's such an irrational reaction for me, cause usually I'm like the super calm guy. And because I can't punch anyone, it's forcing me to leave this irate mean comment.

Whispering just annoys the living fuck out of me, and I'm sure there are other people who experience the same. I don't wanna shit on people who like it, because you know, different strokes for different folks.

This comment doesn't make a ton of sense really. Honestly, I just saw this documentary for Burnie and Gav's adventures in India.

One of my friends gets super uncomfortable from ASMR as well. She's usually a very calm person, but gets very agitated by people even mentioning ASMR with her in the room. I find it interesting that it can have such polar opposite effects on people. By the sounds of things you're not alone.

The mouth sounds thing to me is more gross than soothing, especially when they are so close and you hear EVERY almost wet sound when they talk, like they have a bunch of pop rocks in their mouth. Don't know why, it just creeps me out. Baba Sen videos get me every time though.

Really great documentary, but damn the camera work isn't great in some parts, especially when they were sitting on the RT Podcast set measuring brain waves, when they really have no excuse for bad camera work since it's a controlled environment (but the camerawork in other people's studios/houses was still better)

As a musician I think it's only natural that my main ASMR triggers come from music. As long as I can remember, there would be certain types of music, certain notes and frequencies that would affect me in a way i couldn't explain. As I got older, I started to narrow down what they were. I found that lots of classical music and film scores would trigger my brain at certain points, due to the range of dynamics that genre of music uses. Also, certain kinds of electronic music, usually the more experimental, classical-infused stuff (no not dubstep and house) would also have a similar affect. Another genre that affected me was certain kinds of jazz music, possibly because I am a jazz musician. There would be certain songs that when I played with a band or by myself or even just listening to that sounds in the song would give me a strange but good feeling. Now I go out of my way to find more kinds of music, instruments, frequencies, etc. that trigger me this way. Either by listening or playing one of my instruments, experimenting to find the stuff that works. The affects that music and ASMR have on the brain are one of the most fascinating things in the world to me.

On another note, This documentary is fantastic. Great job, Burnie and Gavin, and RT as a whole.

That's what does it for me - specific points in music are just grand. There's a book called "This I Your Brain On Music" that you might enjoy if you have't read it already. And they've actually done a bit of research on it: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/01/1101...

I've never experienced ASMR-like symptoms from music (just tingles from a good/emotional performance), but I do find that playing arpeggios on the guitar in 3/4 time in the key of E minor to be relaxing. I love the rocking feeling I get from 3/4 or 6/8 time, and I love the low notes (maybe because I play acoustic bass). Have you ever tried listening to a digeridoo? That seems like the kind of instrument that could trigger ASMR.

As much as I love this documentary so far, I'm sadly with the people who doesn't feel anything by ASMR except kind of creeped out. Though I do enjoy sounds a lot such as the clickityness of Taking Back Sunday's Louder Now album or Halo 3 ODST's virgil sounds, or just Portal sounds, just not in that asmr way.

I like that some IT person in NY made up the ASMR term instead of just saying tingles or chills down the spine. It's like PTSD for shell shock, but that was coined by a medical professional. Def don't get it from the "intentional" videos. In fact it kind of annoys me that they are trying to trigger it intentionally, but that's a personal issue haha.

I don't like the episodic format for the documentary. It may just be me, but I like documentary as a whole movie format instead.

I definitely feel tingles in direct ASMR videos, but I feel really intense tingles through indirect interactions. Normally when I loan a personal item to someone and observe them use it. Like in Primary School when I'd lend someone a pencil or something.

I don't get ASMR. No matter what sort or kind, whenever I get linked to an ASMR video, or I stumble across it, I just get irritated.

Now, the head massage feelings, which I got when I watched it way back when they first talked about it, are explained by this sensory part of our brains which translates visual stimulus of an other person feeling something into the sense you are somehow feeling it yourself. Basically, a natural and automatic "put yourself in their shoes" mechanism. When you watch two people hug, your brain, in a way, feels like you're being hugged.

When this documentary was announced, I thought it was going to be about the journey, the search for Baba. Burnie and Gavin talked about flying to India and looking for this obscure person. They didn't say a word about ASMR, which seems to be the actual subject of this film, according to the title and the first quarter of the film.

I don't know. 15 minutes in, a whole quarter, and I don't feel like watching this film. If I didn't know the search for Baba would lie ahead, with a probable result, I would have stopped watching. If I'd come to this film with no previous knowledge, I'd shut it down 10 minutes in.

    Edit:

Now after finishing the film, I realize that the "promised" film is the second half. It was nice to watch, but without the actual scientific explanation to the sensations you get from Baba's videos, which exists like I mentioned above, I feel like the whole "intentional" ASMR bit had nothing to do with that.

As far as I'm concerned, part one could be dropped almost entirely, and they could have added a random guy in a lab coat and a name-tag reading "I'm a scientist!" in all capital letters just explaining the 3rd-person sensory perception.

I'm glad to see Baba so happy for Burnie and Gavin. I do hope Baba will manage to comprehend and harness his new YouTube channel, and earn some money from it.

I have been having ASMR experiences all my life, but I had no idea what they were. I can describe it like Gavin and Burnie have, in that it manifests as a tingling along my scalp that goes down my neck.

I had been triggered over the years by lyric-less music, and only by that kind of music. No other such trigger exists for me (that I'm aware of, anyway). I'm extremely skeptical of the "cosmic energy" thing (as a scientist), but I can also recreate this sensation of tingling by listening to the same music. Usually something classical by Beethoven will do it (Symphony No. 9), or cinematic-use theme music (from example creators like Two Steps From Hell).

It really pleases me that my favorite entertainment company is spending the resources to explore this further, and to spread awareness of what it does. It is very relaxing, it eases any headache I may have, and I get the distinct impression that I feel like I'm observing everything in the world at once - and if I hold that impression just so, I feel at such peace.

My experience with ASMR is always a strange jolt in the lower right side of my back. It's unpleasant but in an "I don't like being tickled" kind of way. It feels like a game I used to play in high school that we called 'taser' (when you sneak up on a friend and stick your index and middle fingers into the dip of their waist and watch them freak out). Whispering has affected me this way since I was a child and I can recall that it also used to happen to my sister. I've only found one other person on the internet who feels like this and I constantly feel like I'm missing something great.

I'm totally open to the idea of having an ASMR trigger, but I have yet to experience anything like what they're talking about in this documentary. Bob Ross is definitely nice to listen to but I really dislike all of the other "whispery" type things featured in this video. The audio quality may have something to do with it, modern microphones can pick up on all of the little lip smacks that really irk me. Regardless, it is definitely interesting hearing and learning about this phenomenon, and I certainly can't take any issue with the positive ways in which it seems to help a lot of people.
