This is the first time I have to vote while not being in my state since I'm away for college, so I don't know the rules. Do I register to vote in my state and mail my ballot or register to vote in the state I'm in for college?

It's up to you. If you'd like to continue to vote in local elections for your hometown/state, you can stay there and absentee vote via a mail-in ballot. If you'd like the convenience of voting in a local place, you can register to vote in your new location.

Personally, I stayed registered in my hometown when I was in college, and my mom helped me line up my mail-in vote. Each state is different, so I recommend that you Google your state + "mail-in ballot."

LITERALLY none of the parties will do what I want. 1st 2nd or 3rd parties. I want complete and total reform of our government and have the voting process changed. Which party will do that?

Everyone's voting you down, but looking at the US elections from a different country makes me cringe. It's such a poor system, and the government is so corrupt. We were the number one least corrupt country in 2012/3, and dropped to 3rd for 14/15 (damn you Sweden) and our voting system is simple, effective and is actually fair.

@DrippyWafflr What country do you live in? Here in the U.K we've got a complex system but it works (sort of), it's a bit difficult in the U.S because everything has to go through Congress and the senate so ultimately the Government can't do jackshit if the Opposition controls the Senate

@AI_Lambda New Zealand. We vote for the party we want and our local representative on the same piece of paper. The percentage of party votes you get is the percentage of seats in parliament you get, plus all the locally elected representatives get seats as well. The leader of the party that wins becomes the leader of the country. So if there are 100 seats and 50 local rep seats and a party gets 15% plus 3 locally elected reps they get 18 out of the 150.

@DrippyWafflr Ok, here in the U.K we vote for an MP that we want representing our constituency. So in my local area I vote for Vernon Coaker MP who's an MP for Labour and he got elected so he got the most votes and gets a seat in the House of Commons but in the entire country the Conservative Party got more MP's elected so has more seats so then is "asked" by the Queen to form a Government as it is in the interests of the people. The Party with the second most votes is then titled as the official Opposition and forms a Shadow Government. We have a House of Lords but I don't understand how that works as it isn't very democratic all I know is that they approve the Bills that Parliament have already passed. I never thought that on April 1st 2003 Burnie, Matt, Joel, Geoff, Gus and to an extent Jason and Kathleen would have ever thought that people would be discussing politics and their Website lol!

@AI_Lambda So ours is the same but there are additional party seats and the party has a roster of priority as to who gets to fill those seats. It means you can vote more strategically - if you want to vote for a minor party, but it is likely the people in your area who you don't like are going to win (I'm going to use the Greens, National and Labour as an example) you could party vote Green (who get around 15%) but candidate vote Labour so the National candidate doesn't win. National is the NZ version of the Conservatives.

I really approve of the intent of this video but I think it would've been all the more powerful if they'd talked about it in the outro or something. It's going to be too easy for people to watch the video and not bother reading the description. I hope other parts of RT will also take it upon themselves to give the same message.

It doesn't take that long to register and it is the BARE MINIMUM that is expected of someone in a civilised society. If you drive on the roads or walk on the footpaths, if you turn on your taps for water or call for an ambulance, you are using the services society provides for you and the price for it is participating in the democracy that makes it tick.

And paying your taxes, but that's no fun so let's ignore that.

    • c550456 17th Sharder

      @Enigmatic_Eagle

Except that the president has only been a figurehead position for decades, serving as nothing more than someone to blame when things go wrong, or celebrate when things go right. They have a facade of political power, but in truth it tends to almost always just be that, a facade......

    • c550456 17th Sharder

Exactly. The only thing a president can really do is affect foreign policy. They have no power over domestic legislation except for the ability to veto bills.

@c550456: Obviously they'll still be there, I'm not an idiot. But who sits in the state assemblies or senates, the city councils, the House, the White House, these things matter because the personal politics of each of those individuals are reflected in the bills they propose and the laws they pass. Republicans want to cut spending and increase (most) taxes. Democrats want to increase spending and lower (most) taxes. These things matter.

Do you want the lights to turn on at night?

Do you want snow to be ploughed off the roads?

Do you want FEMA to be adequately funded to provide disaster relief?

Do you want the water in your taps to poison you?

The gal (or guy) in the Oval Office sets the tone for every other level of government. The decisions they make lead directly to counter-decisions from the House, from state legislatures, from the courts. If the President decides it's time to cut spending, budgets get redrafted and suddenly there's less money for services. That affects you directly.

The point I'm trying to make in a very roundabout way is that every single election at every single level matters because the person who sits in the chair has direct influence over the course of your life.

If you're OK not having a say in who's running your country, that's up to you, but you're doing a disservice to every other person you share that country with because a government cannot properly serve it's population's interests & needs unless the population as a whole helped to choose the government.

Rant over, thanks for listening. I'm going to go back to fretting over the state of British politics which is every bit as fucked as Americas.

Your not entirely wrong or right there. Yes the popular vote may not win the presidency or each state but this is very rare. Obviously it happen in 2000 with Al Gore and Bush, but it is still rare and some funky stuff happened in Florida. But if a candidate wins the popular vote in a state it is extremely rare that the delegates do not declare for that candidate.

To sum up, yes only electoral college electors votes count, BUT they 99% of the time go with the popular vote on a state by state level.

Wish it was that fast. Ohio apparently thinks it's still 1981 where you have to mail things. Nothing like having to find an envelope (people still use these?) and then wait in line behind 25 senior citizens at the post office (they're still in business?) for 30 mins to get a stamp and mail it out. And then hope it actually makes it to it's destination.

So how does the registration procedure happen? Is it on a website? Do you go to a specific government office? What if you don't register but want to vote? Do they kick you out?

Kudos to you RT! Using your platform to spread an important and positive message! I'm from PA and got my voting ID back in March for the Primaries. While it may have taken me a little longer than 2 minutes, it really is as easy as they make it sound! Glad to see the AH guys (other than Jack) getting a little political! Wait... I love this, fantastic message, but personally I don't want to vote for someone I dislike because I dislike the other guy more, it just doesn't sit right with me. You could argue by not voting I am part the problem, but I could argue that compromise voting is even worse...

Then don't compromise vote. Spoil the ballot, write something along the lines of 'I would not want either candidate in power' on your voting sheet. It's what people do in the UK, I don't know if it's the same in the US but it has to be noted how many ballots are spoiled.

Finding a third party you support will also work. You aren't voting for someone you hate and you will add tot he count of desperately needed third parties. It's better than not voting at all, and may help everyone in the long run. (may help)

@moriuh Trump is hated by nearly everyone in the political scene. Including people from his own party. There is no way that he will be able to do much if he takes office. He isn't as big of a threat as people think he will be. Congress will just stone wall anything he wants to do. Or he will just give all of his responsibilities over to anyone who wants them. His finger isn't "on the red button" like everyone on The Left is saying. There is a long list of protocols that have to be met in order for him to even get close to launching nukes. Literally none of his policies will go through because he has no real plans for how they will actually work. He is just going to be a badly tanned clown sitting in the White House with his thumb up his ass.

Needless to say, I hate Trump, but being a veteran of the Marine Corps, I also hate Hillary just as much. No person with that much blind ambition and obvious ineptitude should be allowed to serve as President. She has demonstrated time and again how badly she does her job. From getting a rapist off with only 2 months in jail in the 80's, to assisting with the Watergate scandal, to failing my brothers in Benghazi, and using a private email server to discuss top secret information. She has proven that she can't be trusted with a job of this importance. Both bipartisan candidates are stinking dumpster fires.

To be honest, due to gerrymandering and sheep following mentality, the only states that matter are Florida, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and maybe another swing state if there is one.

Watch Adam Ruins Elections on YouTube to see how messed up the electoral college really is. It is both funny and depressing at the same time.

    • Nohwar FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Electoral votes are based on the popular vote in a state, and therefore not subject to gerrymandering. Further, the unique volatility of this election cycle (especially in the past primary) makes it especially important for you to vote in this election. Lastly, vote in your local elections. Its much more important than most people think.

    • jmb83 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Nohwar Wow, you really don't know how the Electoral college works, do you? Each Electoral vote is divided by the voting district they are in within that state. Besides if the popular vote actually dictated who would win, the second Bush would have never been elected president. The Electoral College needs to be abolished and each vote must matter.

As for local elections, I vote every time, usually trying to get out the incumbents who waste my cities money on frivolous things like trees in the middle of the road on medians, or flowers that aren't native to the area. Maintaining all of that is ridiculous.

    • jmos110

Actually other than Nebraska and Maine electoral votes are based on the popular vote in that state.

    • Nohwar FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@jmb83 Yes that's right. Electoral colleges rules are set by the state, and most enact a "winner-take-all" policy based on the popular vote within that state. Like you said, Nebraska and Maine are the only states that do not utilize this policy. Consequently, gerrymandering has no impact whatsoever on the presidential election. I do agree however, that the electoral system is a bit of a relic and should not permit electoral wins and popular losses. The system is a bit of a relic from an era where the government was more concerned by the tyranny of an "uneducated" majority.

That being said, gerrymandering is still a pervasive problem at the local, state, and national representative levels that should absolutely massive issues in our current society. Luckily, there are a few court cases are running through the lower courts that concern the constitutionality of gerrymandering, but it may be some time before we see any of that come to fruition.

Glad to hear that you do vote in local elections. Unfortunately, a lot of towns cities are dealt bad hands when it comes to their elective choices. Sorry to hear about your city as well - we've had this problem in my state for a long time. We have corrupt governors being elected elected in a cycle and lose to the opposing party in the following cycle, only for that person to be corrupt themselves (and so on and so forth). I've always been optimistic about encouraging change at the local level. Unfortunately, voting rates in local elections still remain in dire straits.

Every election is important, including this year's presidential election between a giant douche and a turd sandwich (take your pick on which is which). Every choice matters and has far reaching consequences beyond just yourself, including the choice not to vote, but not voting is never a good thing because then it guarantees that someone you didn't pick will speak on your behalf and represent you. If you vote, then there's at least a chance your voice will be heard. If you don't, it's guaranteed to not be heard.

A lot of people forget that there are more than two candidates.  It's unlikely any of them will be elected, but if you don't want to vote for either Turd Sandwich or Giant Douche and still want your voice to be heard, vote for a third party.
