Over the years of my traveling around the United States, I have been achieving the greatest travel-food bucket list ever. I HAVE to eat a food with the and stating its place of origin.
EX: Eating a Boston-chocolate donut and Boston Baked Beans inside a  Boston Market in the city of Boston; drinking at a Starbucks in Seattle; eating a Hershey bar in Hershey, Pen; eating the original Philly cheese steaks in Philly; or going to the original KFC in Kentucky and soooooooo much more.

It is the single greatest adventure I am doing and the more foods like this I learn, the more I add to the list.
Please, add more food to my list and join the journey.

On the discussion regarding Burnie wanting a hardcore version of Skyrim without the assists, I remember playing World of Warcraft for the longest time where they didn't give you objectives for things on the map. You had to read the quest to figure out where you had to go, and there might have been a marker showing where to turn it in.

A universal income does not work for one reason, it does not inspire personal drive. People have become inherently lazy and will only work hard if there is a positive outcome from it, the harder you work the more gain you get (or so the system should work). If everyone makes the same jobs will stop being done. Example: I work construction, if I wasn't paid well for my labor then I wouldn't continue the work. When people all make the same and nobody works then the world collapses. The way that a totally equal system to work is that some sort of automation is put in place that does every job possible. Then if people want something its free because people don't do anything beyond personal entertainment. But it this comes to that system how much longer will people be necessary?

On a different note, when coming it to contact with alien life we have to think if there are only so many elements in the galaxy then any other society that would sprout up would have a similar level of tech to what we can develop. Which would lead to the 3 options that have become available: Nuclear destruction, Exploration, or the Matrix. What path do you see us on?

    • Scyth0r FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It could work, but it will need a fundamental change in our education system to teach us to change the way people view 'work'. Instead of work being something you are forced to do to survive, it will need to become something people do for personal reasons - either for their own satisfaction or to earn more to provide for a better lifestyle that a universal income alone would provide. A UBI isn't the same as 'everything is free and everyone can afford to buy anything'. It's meant to be enough to live on comfortably, but not in luxury. Sort of what old-age pensions were meant to be before the whole concept was privatised up the wazoo.

What a UBI would do is remove the pressure and worry of everyday life - instead of people constantly rushing about in quiet desperation, worried about taking chances and risks because they could lose the only job that lets them keep eating, jobs would be things people will have to 'want' to do, not 'have' to do. So construction work (for example) would have to be even more well-paid, because fewer people would want it. But chocolate-taster (for example) would be unpaid work, because why pay people for something that everybody will want to do anyway?

It's a totally foreign concept to the way people typically think in the capitalist system we've had for centuries. It's going to take time for people to get their heads around it and for society to accept that not working for 8 hours a day, five days a week doesn't mean you're 'lazy' or a parasite on society.

      /end wall of text.

P.S To anyone who actually read this far....props for determination.

I dunno, considering automation of almost every job is inevitable, something along the lines of universal income or ST society seems to be the appropriate conclusion.

    • AMC427 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I love podcast like this one that make people think and bring out discussion.

I can understand where you're coming from as far as the more strenuous the job that has been done the better the compensation, but the issue would still lie in the matter of where the UBI would come from in the first place. The way our current system of assistance works is that a certain percentage of all working peoples income is put into taxes every week, I'll use my own check as example that I get 40% of my weekly paycheck taken out in taxes. This percentage is then broken up along with everyone else's and distributed to the different organizations within the government. A portion goes into welfare which would essentially be an early stage of the UBI. Now not everyone is on welfare which is why the system hasn't collapsed, but if everyone got a UBI then a bigger percentage of each individuals' check would be required to be removed to compensate. In doing so the more you make the more you lose in the long run, which causes people to give up on working hard in the first place if they can live comfortably without having to put in the effort. If more and more people give up on working then the original source of income will disappear and the system would collapse.

If we move to automate every job and leave humans to not be required to work because robots or AI are taking care of the mandatory tasks that are required to have human society run then there would no longer be need of a fiscal system for everyone would no longer be forced to work. Which as Chewy77 stated seems to be the path that companies are starting to head towards, though through their eyes its a way to make more while paying less, because a machine can be more precise than a human without need of insurance or added expenses. If that mind set can be removed and people build for a better tomorrow instead then a fully automated system would lead to free everything and humans can lead their lives following a hobby rather than a career/entertainment over money. Would this work?  Will we ever see anything like this take place in our lifetime?

The end goal of progression is to bring about laziness , in a sense that no one has to work labor/retail/factory and can devote their time to their own ends.

I must admit, this conversation about automation is interesting and all are valid points, maybe people should notice that we may not live to achieve that, if other matters are not dealt first. Eg, the consumption of resources (eg heavy metals and fuels) the consume-throw away mentality and the general issues in the environment. The AI won't get that level, if we die of in the meantime.

In relation to the exploration of the universe by robots lookup von neumann machines. they're the hypothetical futuristic self-replicating machines that explore the universe by themselves, land on planets or asteroids, mine resources to make more and then go to the next one. Also a good argument for no life on other planets as some intelligent life form in the past maybe-could've-might've invented these which we maybe=could've-might-ve seen already. Which we haven't

Burnie mentions Orson Scott Card's Xenophobia, but Speaker for the Dead is the book where the tree aspect of the pequeniño's lives which was revealed in a way that made the story of the book really interesting as well as the concept of the Hierarchy of Foreigness. The whole book IMO is fantastic when viewed in the context of the Hierarchy of Foreignness because of how the life cycle of the pequeniños and how the pequeniños themselves relate to humanity's idea of life. I have not found a novel that deals with the concept of sentient aliens in such a nuanced way, which is truly a testament to the author's skill as a storyteller to anyone familiar with his personal, bigoted opinions.
