I loved hearing Sally talk about casino games and probability, I work and a casino and its super refreshing to hear someone have an actual understanding that the outcome of the upcoming event is in no way effected by previous outcomes, rendering patterns and tracking obsolete in most casino games(Blackjack being the big exception). It's called the Gamblers Fallacy, and it is fantastic to hear it explained so perfectly by someone who does not work in my field.

i dont get the conversation about gays evolving to have better suited reproduction systems for same sex, sex. you cant evolve without having children and homosexuals cant have children together it doesn't go anywhere also homosexuality cant be a gene because how would it be passed on if  homosexuals cant reproduce together? does anybody think about this before they talk or do they ignore the fact that a male cant have a child with a male and a female cant have a child with a female. currently.

    • Sharkwaiter FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

There are gay men who have children through surrogacy and women who have children through sperm donors, though, it doesn't mean gay people can't have children.  The argument still doesn't make any sense though, because vaginas being better for lesbian sex isn't a survival issue, so evolution isn't likely to select for it, or pay any attention to it.  Unless there was someone doing selective breeding process for it.  Which I sincerely hope there isn't.  Also, just because you're a lesbian doesn't mean your daughter would be a lesbian, so no.  Not really much sense in it.  Lesbians and gay people aren't a race.

    • arcangel4774 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I cant recall where I heard this, although it was about how genes can be active or dormant if it leads somebody to it.  Anyway, it explained that the "gay gene" is activated by high stressful environment for the mother, so that a more emotionally sensitive person is born to help take care of the family. This is coupled with the inversion of sexual desires so the person won't leave the family, but instead stay to support their birth family.  This is evolved through altruism in evolution. Essentially I help my sibling to have offspring so that they pass down the genes.

You clearly weren't listening to what she was saying. She was saying that just because something happens in nature it doesn't validate it as being a good or positive thing, she didn't say anything about homosexuality being bad. So saying that, even though she obviously supports the LGBT community (she has come out publicly as being bi/gay/queer herself, her words not mine), the fact that there is homosexual behaviour in the animal kingdom isn't proof that homosexuality is a good or a bad thing hence why she used infanticide, cannibalism and murder as other things that happen in nature but are obviously negative. Something being natural or found in nature doesn't equal good so we shouldn't base our morality around that.

Long story short, she wasn't saying that being gay is a bad thing, ya plum.

    • Sharkwaiter FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Homosexual behaviour in nature certainly helps against the people who say it's 'unnatural'.  It doesn't have to mean that it's good or bad, outside of whether or not people want to do it, and who it harms (not consenting adults, generally).  Sexuality isn't an issue of morality anyway.  Even sexual violence is an issue of violence, not sex.

The smart car problem isn't actually a problem. If the system has the information to reason about who to "Hit" then it has the information to prevent that scenario. If it doesn't have the information than its not gonna be able to make the decision.

    • PaesChild FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It can't reason who to hit without the appropriate programming to determine which inevitable "hit" is the better solution. That's where the problem comes in. To make that programming, humans have to determine how to solve that predicament. And I don't quite see what you mean by "it has the information to prevent that scenario." The whole point of the problem is regarding scenarios that can't be prevented.

There is a lot of stuff to talk about in this podcast that sally talked about but one of the most baffling things had to be her self preservation talk. I feel like she is interjecting her own bias of not liking sex or human reproduction into the conversation. If a person has a baby early on it gives it a better chance of being the healthiest and longest living life it can be. If you have it much later on statistically it will not(not that it is always the case but statistically average). This does mean shorter generations but it also means with a healthier set of genes the female will not age as much after a baby. I know our self awareness will tell us otherise but at the end of the day the most important thing we can do for our set of genes is to reproduce. In fact, it is written into our code that we need to reproduce our genes at a young age. Our bodies are set up to make us want sex and that is why it feels good and intimate. Sally unfortunately is defunct to this very basic biological function because she is too aware of the biological consequences however doesn't realize that is the entire point of existence as an animal.

im not disagreeing that that could have been her motivation but i felt she was going more along the lines of evolution decided that varying genetic patterns that split and cause more variance works better than keeping a single pattern forever that could be destroyed and that the only reason reproduction is a thing is that evolution flipped one switch and not the other

The smartcar problem bothers me because they always skip over this one simple fact: Brakes. This stupid "problem" hinders on the idea that there wouldn't be a goddamn E-brake or a set of pneumatic or hydraulic braking systems. The idea that any smartcar would not have a manual backup system to allow user override is stupid. No employed engineer or engineering company (ie car companies) would allow for a fully automated vehicle, in the sense that there would not be an emergency manual system. We tried fully automatic medical equipment in the past and it got people killed due to coding errors.

in those situations where brakes would work they will, this is for no win situations where someone is going to die not every situation where you can just stop like a slick road or some such

    • RiverRunning

As @Teagaaaaaaan mentioned there are slick roads but there are also brake failures, wheel and tire failures (which would mean brakes wouldn't work) and, most important of all with respect also to manual systems, not enough time for a human to react - especially since with an entirely automated car road system the speed of cars could easily be increased at no greater risk to safety than currently exists; they could still be increased a lot and have greater safety than currently exists too.

Essentially there is always going to be a situation where this problem exists but (in my opinion) it is likely that if individuals are making the decisions that it is likely that manufacturers will simply not include any programming to solve this problem at all - to include the programming opens them up to being liable to being sued by "collateral damage" victims and their families and also issues with customers not being keen on using their vehicles unless the programme is set to only kill other people. It will take the government imposing rules to make companies include this programming for the general good of society (and reducing the number of road deaths) before this will happen; particularly in the USA (out of Western countries at least); it is likely that car manufacturers in some other countries will view this differently, e.g. Scandinavian countries where they are famed for the safety of their cars.

To people concerned about growth hormones in their food... Somatotropin is the growth hormone. It is also a protein hormone, meaning it is composed entirely of amino acids just like all proteins. When you eat a protein, your digestive tract breaks it down into the smaller amino acids. A full protein is too large to be absorbed; it must be denatured and broken down for your body to take it in. If for some reason it cannot break it apart, then it simply exits the body in feces. Your body is not absorbing functional growth hormone in any way, shape, or form. It is absorbing the same 20 amino acids that your body uses to build other proteins.

Further than that, bovine somatotropin- cow growth hormone- is extremely different from human somatotropin. I had a professor who claimed he could inject bovine somatotropin directly into his bloodstream (thus by-passing the digestive tract breaking it down, and giving himself a dose thousands of times higher than you would ever find in milk or meat) and suffer absolutely no ill effects. It is not similar enough to our own growth hormone to elicit a response in humans. It will not bind nor block any of our receptors because it does not match any of them, which is how hormones cause a reaction from a cell. Even if there are traces of growth hormone in your food (and they would be in minuscule amounts at that), there is physically no way for it to affect your own growth. It's the same reason a diabetic cannot just ingest their insulin (another protein hormone). It has to be biologically compatible, and injected straight to the bloodstream to have an effect. Growth hormone in your meat or milk is neither. It's just another protein to be digested.

I really do think single room bathrooms are the real solution. Each room has a sink and a floor-to-ceiling door that locks.

That said, I think your comment is based on fallacious logic. There is no statistical evidence showing increases in sexual violence in bathrooms in places that already have unisex bathrooms. At first glance I understand how the unisex bathroom thing sounds dangerous, but there's just no evidence that it is dangerous. The fact of the matter is that a very small percentage of people are even prone to that kind of deviant behaviour, and those who really want to pursue that behaviour will find a way to do it. If you take away a meth addict's meth, they're gonna find some avenue to acquire more meth, they'll just find more secretive means to go about using it so that they don't get caught. Unless you want to live in the world of Minority Report, there is a certain amount of deviant behaviour that is going to happen, one way or another.

I don't get offended by African American or Black, but I'd much rather be called black because saying African American implies that I was born in Africa and came to America. When really I've never been to Africa and don't plan to go. I can't even trace my family back that far to Africa.

There's also what Gavin mentioned, where American people refer to black English actors as African Americans. There's the fact that somebody with dark skin might be have Dominican ancestry or something rather than African. There's the fact that calling a black person African American when I've never heard anybody calling a white person European American, they're just American, has the connotation that black people such as yourself are less American than white people like myself. Which is a pretty shitty connotation. Those are some of the several reasons I feel weird saying it. Lots of assumptions in the term African American that I don't feel comfortable making unless somebody tells me that is what they prefer to be called.

at about 1:27:20 miles was talking about someone who appeared to be a woman but was a man. when i was a kid (7 ish) we had a handy man that would do a bunch of odd jobs for our landlord, i'd see him a fair bit and knew him fairly well. he decided that he wanted to be a woman, and my parents had to explain this to me and i was just so baffled by the whole thing

All Saiyans are named after vegetables, Namekians are instruments, Bulma's family is underwear, and best of all the Gods are alcohol.

There's also Garlic Jr. with his cooking army (Garlic, Ginger, Sansho, Spice, Vinegar, Nikki (Cinnamon), Salt, and Mustard).
Krillin is an onomatopoeia joke about monks.

Red Ribbon Army has leaders named for colors with the pretty racist choice of "Staff Officer Black" being the only black guy.

Friza's army has tons of people named for fruit.

      Friza's successor is Sorbet.

There's a planet Saute with an infamous villain named Gryll.

It just keeps going, since this series is a parody of action anime, it was never meant to be taken so seriously.

The gods of destruction are named after alcohol. The supreme kais are not.

Goku is named after the Monkey King, who rides on a cloud and wields a telescoping staff.  In Chinese it's Sun Wukong, but in Japanese, he's Sun Goku.

And Gohan is Japanese for "lunch."
