It's the Kentish upbrining at a guess, they are by far the fluffiest people I've come across outside of upper class/private school educated people.

Hoping this doesn't come across as ignorant, as it's a genuine question, but why is something like drag generally widely accepted, (the On the Spot episode was HILARIOUS!) yet something like blackface (as an example) is generally shunned? Aren't these just performers, putting on make-up or a costume to play on the general stereotypes that that gender or race supposedly have? Why is it acceptable to make a character that pushes the 'norm' boundaries on gender, but not on race?

    • RiverRunning

Because things got so much worse in terms of race and things are only now becoming an issue with gender and few trans (et al.) are happy speaking out about things they do find offensive... I found the On The Spot episode, for example, was both vaguely amusing but also seriously cringeworthy... (but then I find the same about blackface {and find the USAian attitude is rather over the top in this particular case but then that's almost certainly cultural}); it's because I'm laughing at how much the people doing it are failing (as if they are falling into the Uncanny Valley that plagues human looking androids) and cringing at the same time for pretty much the same reason.

    • RiverRunning

P.S. Forgot to say that Cupcake didn't fall into the Uncanny Valley... she was pretty impressive!

Maybe the difference is that Drag has become owned by the community?

There have been gender issues for centuries. - The suffragettes movement fought against this in the late 19th century, but had been going on for hundreds of years beforehand. - So things aren't "only now" becoming an issue on gender. (Though I understand there are major differences in the battle for equality in race and gender.) But the base question still stands, why is it okay to poke fun at gender stereotypes, but not race (no matter how light at heart)? They're both things that people are born with in which they have no say in choosing, so why is one so heavily regarded as non-PC, whilst the other is fine? Surely they should be on equal footing?

I really think it would be healthy for them if they got a chance to talk with a normal Trump supporter. I agree with the point of view that disallowing military service to trans people simply on the grounds of being trans is wrong ,however, when the 2016 elections were occurring many people had to make a decision that meant someone was going to get into the office and inevitably make their own decisions that the voters didn't agree with (like every other election really.), however the vast majority of people who voted for Trump didn't do so because they hated LGBT people or Minorities or any other reason they are so often accused of, they did so because to them the alternative was more of the same corporate presidents that acted in their own interests, not the interests of the American people. Nationalism is NOT Nazism, wanting what is best for your home is NOT racism, I can vote for Trump and still disagree with things he does. I decided to write this out because I admire the people at Roosterteeth, they have done so many things that help brighten the days of many who need it, yet when you shut out opposing views to yours you wind up in an ideological echo chamber. Listening to the other side is a good first step but you must engage with others who think differently to you, sit down with someone who voted for Trump and ask them why they did, don't tell them they're wrong, don't call them hateful names, just talk, just converse with them, if at the end of the talk you still disagree IT'S OKAY, you don't have to agree with everything and you can still be kind to each other. If anyone decides to read this, I implore you to think not with emotions but with logic and an open mind. I apologize for the somewhat scattered nature of this post but I felt like I had to try and say something.

    • RiverRunning

TLDR; Were I USAian I'd not have voted for either Trump or Clinton in your position.

I should ask though, are you still happy that you helped elect a leader who is ridiculed the world over? And who (in turn) makes your country alternatingly the laughing stock and the insane Joker of the world?

I ask not because I have an issue with your choice, I have a problem with you answer why you seem to have made it. You seem to think that your political system is an either/or choice... it's not and enough of you all who don't like the choices bother to vote for other choices then change can be made to happen... it finally made a difference in the UK with the Green party (who are finally getting MPs elected) because people realised that there was a choice that made a difference - but it took people believing they could make a difference by being honest about who they really wanted in office.

I don't know if you guys are still looking for feedback on this, but I love the idea of the addition of the two person podcast.  I am excited about the idea of watching just two RT people sitting down and having a conversation.  I love the breaking in of people like Ellie and Brandon and the intimacy of the one-on-one conversation between the two main people.  I love it!  I hope this becomes a new thing for us to watch, because I am a really big fan!

Also, just an aside: Ellie is delightful, and I love her voice!  She should read audiobooks or something.  She is so charming!!  I hope she continues to be in more and more content!

Yeah, I think it could work really well as like a once or twice a month thing.  It feels like sort of an off-shoot of both Game Time and the vlogs.  I think it would be cool to see it with other people, particularly like this where it's a way for them to catch up, as opposed to two people who don't know each other well or more of an interview type thing.

I honestly think that as long as you properly sort things using playlists then Rooster Teeth shouldn't need to keep splitting channels. I don't want it to end up where half of my subscribe list is 30 different YouTube channels.

Gotta say I agree with Gavin on this one. If I make a specific request for a flight and the person completely disregards that request because it's easier to simply ignore it then I'd definitely call you out for not doing your job. Especially if I'm constantly flying, earning a lot of points, and the upgrade would be free.

If Burnie is really interested. I want RT to stop dividing everything into different channels. I don't like that everything sits on different channels. If you create good playlists then there is no reason to make extra channels. Plus having everything exist in one place makes it easier to discover new stuff. It wasn't until weeks after when funhaus started I even realized they were part of lets play. And the only reason I did is because they did a cross play with achievement hunter. Honestly the solution here is fixing the channel layout, not making new ones. Also as a side note. If you guys care so much about the youtube and the video landscape, than fix your own damn site.

I think RT Animation deserves their own channel. Maybe not move RvB over to it right away, but I think all of the other animated shows should be on a separate channel. It just seems cleaner and less cluttered that way. But what do I know. I'm just a random guy on the internet.

"Their wrong and just surrounded by the same people so they think their right." That's how I feel about Rooster Teeth in many situations. Granted, I agree with what Gavin used this to explain, but that is how most of the world is in most situations. That sort of attitude is nothing new and something I really don't like about Rooster Teeth. My personal beliefs are vastly different from theirs and it's fine if they disagree with what I believe, but it's not cool to insult people just for their differing opinion.(Which they do every now and then) You'd be surprised how good of friends people who are polar opposites can be. You've just got to be a little open minded. But before I get shit on for speaking out against them, i've been watching Rooster Teeth's videos almost everyday for about 6 years now and I don't plan to stop any time soon. Just please practice what you preach. Although, even if they don't i'll probably still be watching.

They are. They just can't understand why someone wouldn't want another person to have rights, especially when you compare now to the history of the 60's. That's their opinion on that, everyone should have rights and should understand that other people are also as human as the person looking at them is.

Enjoyed the two man format a lot! Rotating people in as guests was very cool. A little disappointing seeing how grandstanding Ellie was about the flight though. Gavin has a very valid point, and as he pointed out she hasn't exactly experienced flying to events much. With all the years of travelling to events shouldn't Gavin's opinion on travel hold some weight? Enjoyed the rest but that part stuck out to me, especially since she went on to basically say you just have to socially manipulate and guilt trip your way through customer support to get free extras. So far overall I'm loving the fact we get two RT podcasts a week, quite a treat!

I'm not trying to troll or start a fight here, but I don't understand why drag is not offensive to women in the same way that blackface minstrel shows are offensive to black people. I'm not in the business of telling people what they should and should not be a offended by, especially when I'm not in that group.

But as a mixed race person, when I see blackface minstrel stuff, I'm seeing someone mocking part of my ethnicity by dressing up as a grotesque caricature and then playing that stereotype for comedy. I understand that male drag performers put a great deal of effort into their work but aren't they essentially creating the same caricature of a woman that a white minstrel performer would do for a black person?

Interesting to hear perspectives on this.

    • Otherbuttons FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Drag isn't there to mock women though, and unless I'm mistaken I don't think it's ever been. It's always felt more of a celebration of women, of fashion, of performance. I'm not too up on history, but from what I've read of Minstrels who blackfaced, yes they were telling tales, but somewhere along the line- if not always- it became a case of mocking black folk, and/or not really researching into and respecting the people they were performing as.

I'm sure there's a drag queen or few out there that do mock women, just as there may be people blackfacing that do mean no harm (there have been cosplayers of this exact), but an action is defined by a social construct grown over a long period of time. Actions often speak louder than words, and I imagine it's something to do with the majority of those that do being the loudest.

I don't usually debate or anything, so this might be a little oddly phrased. This is just a perspective from someone who's been raised and lives as a woman for the most part.

    • fullofwish FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I've thought about this before as well, that perhaps some women may, justly, feel offended by those who identify as men dressing up in drag. Drag typically is an over the top caricature/stereotype/flashy "diva" performance.

Women are often belittled and devalued if they exhibit so-called "diva" traits, wear "too much" makeup, or dress "flashy/to get attention", etc. So, in the same way that it's appropriation to take a racist stereotype or cultural item of other groups of marginalized people and use it as a costume you can take off later to continue to enjoy your privilege, it can be troubling.

I suppose much of the nuance that goes into it is that gender expression, like gender, doesn't have to be rigid, but can be fluid. You can express yourself as feminine or as masculine as you want, regardless of whatever gender you identify, and that is separate from disparaging or mocking others. It's also important to note, that although not exclusively, many drag queens are queer-identified men, who, (while not exempt from harmful masculinity, misogyny or sexism,) often have learned to navigate the social structures that code them as feminine (and feminine devalued as lesser than masculine) and celebrate and appreciate femininity rather than distance themselves from it. There are great aspects of both femininity and masculinity and humanity is better rounded if people are allowed to embrace all sides without being demeaned for not fitting into the arbitrary constructed categories.

I think your point is interesting but some people who do drag just don't just do it for work or because thier enjoy becoming some one else. For some its away of becoming somebody they always wanted to be but could'nt because of socail norms or because they have family ect...

I live in Britian and compared to the lets say the 80's social attuitude has shifted a whole lot,  i don't know if it because womens rights got real speed after WW2 or because the opinion on AIDS and Gays took a big swing around that time because of princess Dianna and because attitudes have swung on those things other attitude barriers are being knocked down. However i know a family that is suffering a break because the grandad of that family has came out and decided he wants to be a women, having done drag in sercert in the past, he feels the times have changed enough to be accepted in soceity however his childern are'nt accpecting but his granchildern are. As you can image this a massive life choice that affected her private life but she feels soceity is at a point on the majority that she can be accpected for being who she wants to be and i think that should honestly be the focal point of this isssue rather than is it going to upset the guy next door.

People who do drag do it because it genuine, while thier in drag they are genuine people and not the people they woke up as it honest roleplay to the point its a different person. Where as blacking up isn't done in a carful or genuine way, at the time were'nt surrporting and they were'nt doing to make a bold point of that who they want to be, it was for laughs to a white audince in a highly racist time. Drag is not just caricature but it's a bold expression played genuinly. Why demener people who are expressing thier right to express them selfs.

To all who are interested in the stance of transgenders in the military from a military member. The army is not about conforming to you it's about conforming to it. People are not allow to join because their are aren't good enough, they can't physical pass a PT test, people are not allowed in because they aren't smart enough, or have a criminal record.

For those few of you who have spent weeks to months without showers, talking to family, and being where people want to kill I'm glad to call you a brother. For those of you who don't understand my point there is the military is there to fight and kill enemies of the United States, transgender people will NOT be able to receive the proper medication and help they will need to be transgender. In Afghanistan and Iraq there is no possible way to give hormone pills to those who are transgender, when you live on a base that measures 100 meters by 100 meters, and everyday you are fighting for your life. Not gloriously like people think, not fighting face to face, using bombs and artillery to kill those far away, and shooting those you have already shot to make sure they are dead and can't kill you. War is not a place for anyone who is is not mental, physically, or emotional stable enough to do terrible things to people who want to kill you all cost, unfortunately transgender people have to go through at long process and have to go through a taxing process to be who they truly are, but the battlefield is no place for people how have been through such a emotional straining process.

I am all for the equal rights of the LGBTQ community every person on this earth deserves the same rights as everyone else. But saying that you have a right to serve the military is incorrect, many people who aren't transgender wish to serve in the military but can't because they don't meet the standards set by those in DC.

But Trump talked about transgender people not being allowed to serve the military in any way - including non-combat rules. Surely trans people should be assessed based on their actual skills, abilities and mental state just like a cis person would be rather than outright banned from all roles.

    • tHunter FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Lottiesaurus I would be inclined to agree with you, If non-combat roles existed as a truth when a true war is break out. Currently over in Afghanistan we have the ability to support such a role, but in a country like Syria or Russia we do not if you are constantly on the move like the surge of Iraq moving hundreds of miles in a single day combat role or not, to ultimately destroy whoever gets in your way.

Also to switch it to keeping Transgenders in the united and not deploying, if we receive an attack on the home front there would be no time to deal with anything that might inhibit rapid mobilization to go kill all enemies attacking the United States. The military is a team through and through and if someone is slowing down the unit the entire unit is slow. So those around them must carry them (sometime physically) to the objective, and in a time over all out war every soldier, marine, airmen, ect. needs to be 100% able to keep with unit speed, and 110% of effort from all members of their phalanx.

It's a pity that your entire post falls apart when it's brought up that there are thousands of trans people already serving in the military, already doing all the things you're thinking are too tough for them.

Sorry bud, it's 100% bigotry based.

You see Psykoma because I going to guess that you never been to Afghanistan, Iraq, or anther country were everyone hates you and tries to kill you I'll put this into perspective for you. My unit brought 2500 soldiers over to Afghanistan out of those 2500 I don't know a single one who is transgender, or openly transgender. I know people who where in great relation with family, and friends, everyone most of the people they know, go clinically insane and threaten to kill everyone in an area. This occurred with 5+ people and these are people who I've spent months with training how to kill anyone who an immediate threat to you life.

Also if you want real bigotry, go over to Afghanistan and say your gay. They will throw you off a building, say you love america and get your car shot up by Taliban, these are the things that happen in Afghanistan, my opinion saying that when your brain and genetics disagree on what gender you which takes a toll on you both physically and mental is not bigotry. As is saying that if you brain and genetics doesn't agree on your gender that you don't need emotional support.

So you're saying that literally anyone would or could break under the rigors of military combat, which to me kind of disproves your point that trans people shouldn't be permitted in the military because they may break under the rigors of combat. If that's the argument, then shouldn't literally everyone be excluded from serving?

Your 2500 person anecdote really doesn't mean much in a total population of almost 1.3 million.

I apologize. I'm not trying to imply you're bigoted, but somewhere else being bigoted doesn't negate the bigotry of this declaration by trump. Cheers.

I really don't get the appeal of Steven Suptic. He comes out to me as someone who tries too hard to be cool and funny. He's not for me and if people like him, good for them.

This set up reminded me of one of my favorite previous episodes where it was just Gus and Geoff.

Also, my heart was not ready for Ellie. Wow, she's amazing.

really loved this 2 person podcast. i think it showed us more of Gavin and Burnies off screen personality, the Monday podcast is always so hype and there are a lot of conversations and topics where everyone is ''on'' which is still awesome but i think one on one (with a few people on the side) is a much more down to earth approach with deeper discussions. would love to have Monday podcasts to be a ''full'' version while Thursdays be this deeper more ''real life'' version if that makes any sense at all

Burnie if you do have to travel with a cat again don't fed them for 12-14 hours before hand then when you get in the car give them small amounts of food at regular intervals to make sure they don't do a fear poop.

Very true that people on Youtube like a focus format. I know Angry Joe is having a major issue for the last year or longer where all people want are reviews, but when he does vlogs or let's plays or whatever, then he gets a ton of hate for it. He is losing subscribers and takes over his comments. It is difficult to expand, but awesome to see how it benefited RT. (Hopefully works out for Joe who is awesome and in Austin so can easily collaborate lol)
