Guns can't be banned, it's an invention that once created will never disappear. Even if you ban them and get rid of all of them, people will still have them. You can print one these days in your own house, it's impossible to stop it at this point. Weapons are just a part of human nature, if you think there will ever be a time without weapons you're just wrong. I too have guns for home defense, and so far they haven't caused any trouble just sitting in my closet. Human responsibility is the ONLY factor that needs to be considered, every problem or crime is based completely on individual human choice.

I've been busy the past couple weeks - and I'm only just catching up on past podcasts now. But listening to them talk about aid for puerto rico, forest fires, and gun control – I feel like this could have been recorded yesterday. It really is a testament to their point of how things like that are just brushed aside. 26 days later - still no progress.

In regards to the definition of an assault rifle, I have always associated the term with a selective-fire rifle that fires an intermediate cartridge from a magazine-fed system. For Call of Duty fans out there, think about the StG-44 created by the Germans during WWII. This was the first widely used weapon of its type and basically coined the term "assault rifle". It is possible to get fully automatic weapons but these are usually weapons qualified as Curios and Relic and are so expensive and rare that only a niche class of people would buy them, let alone use them.

The definition of an assault rifle seems to be warped by the media to the point where it seems to have such a broad meaning that it is meaningless. If it's big and has a magazine then it probably would be called an assault rifle by most people. The AR-15, AK-47, and other popular rifles are the closest thing to an assault rifle the public can get their hands on, minus the fact they are semi-automatic only. That's not to say there aren't people with actual automatic versions of these weapons, they exist and I have heard of them through friends and family. Do these weapons qualify as assault rifles even though they don't have full auto capabilities? That's a topic of debate.

In terms of an actual assault rifle with fully automatic capabilities, I personally feel a ban against that is ok. We already have that ban essentially with the automatic weapons restrictions. It's not like a civilian is gonna need to suppress an entire mob of gangbangers with an M4 carbine.

Whatever happens with gun control happens. It will never stop deranged people from finding another way to harm innocent people. You can ban every object in the world but as long as someone has their own hands and teeth they will use what they got to do evil things. The object itself is not evil, but the human mind can be.

Man, that sucks. Long distance is really hard. I did it after moving after being in a 3 yr relationship; we lasted about 9 months long distance, and that was only 4 hrs away, didn't need to fly. I'm sure they realized it was crazy how much money they were spending on flights and stuff; Bruce mentioned like they had spent like $18,000 just one travel since their relationship started. Crazy.

White people using black emojis is similar to the old black face stuff? What the fuck are you on about? Maybe to prevent this there should be a feature that uses facescan so you can only use emojis that relate to your face. That would solve all the problems wouldn't it? I like you guys, but god damn. You're comparing something that was actually offensive to "lol :)"

I'm prepared to be downvoted to oblivion, but:

I say ban all the damn guns. I don't like them, and the average person has no real need for them. I don't trust a random stranger to have the power to kill me and who knows how many other people that easily and quickly. And to counter a hypothetical "Well, someone could do that with a car, are you suggesting we ban cars now too?": Damn near anything can be used as a weapon, obviously. Someone could stab me or hit me with a car or who knows what else, but that's something being used as a weapon. A gun just is a weapon. It's primary function is to kill/destroy. Also in response to "Criminals don't care about laws, they'll still have guns." or "If someone wants to kill people, they will." That may well be true, but for one, it'd make it more difficult for them to do so. Plus, even if it didn't solve everything, fewer people would be killed. If it prevented even one mass shooting, even one accidental death, even one suicide, would it not be worth it? Let's face facts, lord knows how many people who've been killed would be alive today if we had stricter gun control laws in America.

The problem with the, "if it save one life" argument is that it can be applied to anything, including gun rights. People's lives have been saved when they use a gun.

Beyond that, the question we must ask ourselves is, how can we create our ideal society? There are plenty of nations that have lots of guns, but low crime rates. Why? Because those nations are happy. There are 2 million people in the US who do not have access to running water. The poverty that exists in this country is shocking. Can we even afford to spend tens, or hundreds of billions of dollars on guns, when our people are so poor? That doesn't even get into the things we would lose without a well armed citizenry. Hunting is necessary to maintain our environment. Is our government prepared to pick up the slack?

All the downvotes on this is annoying. It could have been said a little nicer, but I agree. Having grown up outside of the country, not having a patriotic upbringing, she simply doesn't have the perspective to understand this issue. Gun laws in America aren't supposed to be about what politicians think is safest for people. They are supposed to be about tradition, history, and most importantly freedom. Taking away peoples rights, no matter what the issue, is anti-American.

repeat after me: There is no such thing as cultural appropriation. The whole fucking point of culture is to share it with as many other people as possible. If you see a black girl wearing a kimono, that is a good thing. If you see a white guy listening to rap, that is a good thing. If you see an Indian guy at a Shakespearean play, that is a good thing. There's a reason cultural victory is an option in Civilization.

i think the prob with culture appropriation (or when its harmful, some people use the phrase "misappropriation") is when people do these things with no intent of learning about the culture they are representing. like when a person dresses up as a "Mexican" for halloween with a big sombrero with a poncho and a donkey thing. and then you ask them why they dressed like this, usually it isn't something like "i really appreciate Mexican people and their heritage and i wanted to reflect that by adopting some of their styles" its usually "i thought it'd be funny". I think thats where lot of people find the problem.

    • publius10

funny is fine. funny is a start. it means the person isn't dismissing the other culture outright, is willing to partake in it and be seen partaking - even as a joke. and from the other person's perspective, if you can't take your culture being mocked then that's on you for taking it too seriously. being able to laugh at yourself can only bring people together.

how many times have you gone through the cycle with memes of "fuck this meme, it's garbage, i want nothing to do with it" to "hah, i'll just use it ironically, show these pricks who take themselves seriously" to "oh wait, i'm now using it seriously and didn't even realize it"?

When people talk about gun control, they only talk about legality and what people can do legally. Go ahead, take away people's right to legally purchase guns. I'll tell you right now, people who go in and shoot up schools, malls, concerts, etc don't give two flying fucks about what they can do legally. If they want to kill people, they will find a way to do it. If they can't purchase guns legally, they will acquire them ILLEGALLY, whether it's buying them in a back alley, stealing them, or even committing OTHER murders in order to commit mass murder later. You can argue legality day and night, but it's ultimately pointless.

wow...   I guess the mod rating on Kira's comment says a lot about the RT audience and why they have such little concern for offending any non-democratic aligned individuals.

Tell me, what did he say that was inappropriate or inaccurate? And yet his comment got rated as "noob". I promise you people who are out to commit atrocities do not care about the law.

ONLY LAW ABIDING CITIZENS FOLLOW THE LAW!. I guarantee when some nut-job gets it in their head to harm people, it does not matter what law you have made or now difficult it is to get anything they can use to inflict pain and death with. They WILL find or make something; you cannot take away enough things to make these horrors go away so you can feel "safe".

The only thing that "banning firearms" will do is ruin an American industry and recreation, and increase violent crimes such as robbery and home invasion and the number of innocent people harmed in them.

If you want to ban these bump fire, slide fire, shooting modifications that reset the sere and increase the rate of fire; that is another story and honestly, when I first seen these products many years ago I knew they would not be legal for long.

It is not guns, or any type of weapon, or explosives or cars or baseball bats that hurt people and commit atrocities. It is psychotic scumbags that do these things. And for every one of them that does something bad, there are 99.9% that do not and wish no one harm.

I can’t remember for sure the person who did it (I want to say it was Jim Jeffries) but he has a fantastic bit about gun control in which he talks about the effects of having illegal and hard to obtain guns in Australia. The long and short of it is that the cost of guns inflates to the point that the only people who can afford to get guns don’t need to resort to violent crimes to make money. I realise there’s no financial gain to the Vegas shootings but the guy still wouldn’t have been able to afford the kit he had.

with all the cc people in the us, it doesnt matter if the guns are legal or not, they wont be stopped by joe dirt with his glock. most cc refuse to help for the legal reprecutions, and other times they cant fight back for chance of hitting other civs. its much harder to get a gun of the black market then you think, or there would be 4-5 times the amount of gun violence in areas with gun control, which is not the case in any nation that has it. you're talking out you ass. numbers dont back you up brah. just admit you have no clue or do actual research instead of assuming you know more then you do.

this coming from a long time hunter and gun nut, and i even sold guns legally. so i actually know what im talking about. we need stricter legislation. btw, gun control does not mean all guns go away, it means you must get the proper training and take every percaution to keep track of guns. just look at gun control in japan.

I'm sorry Mizore, but you're an idiot. Right now, the black market on guns sells the guns OUTSIDE the country, because that's more profitable since people in the US don't NEED to shop for them on the black market. They can buy them legally, or what I call "the grey market", which is people who buy them legally selling them at gun fairs. Since you're a gun nut, you've been to these, right? A bunch of people setting up shop to sell guns and ammo to people without doing background checks? That's little more than a legal black market. The government tried to do this exact same thing with alcohol in the 1920's. What happened? People turned to THE BLACK MARKET. You don't need numbers to back it up, you need COMMON FUCKING SENSE. And you can't compare this issue to other countries. What's the difference between the US and Japan? THE PEOPLE. Guns aren't the problem, PEOPLE ARE. You can sell guns and you can not sell guns, people that want to hurt other people will find a way. Restricting an inanimate object is not going to solve the issue of people that want to hurt other people. You don't even NEED to sell the guns anymore. Someone with access to a 3D printer can MAKE their own gun. Limited use, sure, but it gets the intended job done. Hell, it's made of PLASTIC so it's even easier to sneak past metal detectors. Are we going to go into 3D printer control next? You can kill someone with a piece of paper, is paper control next? How about rocks? Are we going to control rocks at some point? Those are easy to get, they're even free. Weapon control is idiotic no matter what way you spin it. It's just ignoring the real problem, the people who use them.

Something I posted on my facebook. Want to hear other people's opinions:

tl,dr: Mental illness affects everyone, gun control is extremely important, and elect officials who will improve our country and its people.

Out of every tragedy, we must find a way to move forward and make the world better for everyone. My thoughts and prayers go out to anyone affected by the Las Vegas attack.

I hope this incident brings to light two things greatly affect the world today: mental health and guns. Mental illness is not something to be taken lightly or as something that doesn’t matter. From anxiety to depression to bipolar to schizophrenia, all forms of mental illness are important issues. We NEED to provide people with these issues with therapy, medicine, hospital aid, and research. Our government needs to get a program together to help out those with mental illness.

Guns, especially automatic ones, are a large problem in today’s society. I believe that we don’t have a “right” to own a gun. But since it is in our Constitution, that will not change. What we need to change is the allowance of automatic weapons for civilians and the process by which we do background checks. Those with criminal pasts or mental illness should not be allowed to own a gun. And automatic weapons should not be allowed in any civilian home. It is our right to own a gun, but there is a form of discretion that needs to be applied as we change as a society.

What can we do now as citizens? First, if you are affected by mental illness or know someone who may be affect by mental illness, get them or yourself help. It is important to the people affected and for those around them that they get the help they need. Second, if you own a gun or know someone who does, make sure everyone practices gun safety. Finally, we need to elect officials in our government who will change the negative laws and policies in place now to ones that make the world a better place.

Spread the word about these issues and make sure the world knows that the people want change for the better.

    • farson135 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Agreed on the mental illness part, but there are a few issues on the gun part.

When you say automatic, what are you talking about? Automatic, generally refers to machine guns. There has only been one crime committed in the US with a legally obtained machine gun since the 30s. I do not see much of a reason to ban those firearms.

What do you mean by criminal? Felons are already barred from owning firearms unless they receive a special court order allowing them to own firearms again (generally only given to people who need guns, and were not convicted of a violent crime).

If a court declares you mentally incompetent, then you are not allowed to own a gun.

The simple black and white of Guns are good or bad is probably the biggest barrier to a proper level of gun control and safety. Its not a black and white argument. Nothing is. Figure that shit out and it will get so much easier.

As a shooting enthusiast I want to thank you guys for having a reasonable debate about guns, the extreme views out there from both sides drive me nuts.  I absolutely agree that the full auto modifications should be illegal and that there should be stricter rules for buying guns in the states where they don't already exist.  To Burnies point about the semi-auto rifles, they kill far less people per year than pistols and are used far less in crimes so trying to ban them doesn't really make sense.  People want to ban them so mass killings won't happen but most of these events could have happened with pistols as well.

i think that gus and burnie dramatically underestimate the amount of creepy men out there, especially on dating apps. you can tell SO much about what a guy is like from a text conversation and how much easier it is to stop talking to them through an app than it is in person. when you talk to some dude at a bar and then find out, "oh, this guy is making me uncomfortable," there are numerous things that could go wrong in that very instant. he could continue to talk to you after showing/saying you're no longer interested in having a conversation, he could bother your friends, he could cause a scene at the bar, he could follow you if you leave the bar--the list goes on. i would much rather "dismiss" someone over an app than in person for fear of my personal safety

The Purchasing a firearm process is SO much more in depth than that Gus. I work in this industry (Bass Pro Shops).

That form you fill out is a 4473, which is a firearms form that the government requires on gun sales in a consumer market (private gun sales are treated differently)
They take that 4473 run in through a system that goes to the NICS (The National Instant Criminal Background Check System) that is managed by the FBI and ATF.
Depending on states laws, you may have to run through an ADDITIONAL background check for state infractions and so on. Some states have waiting periods. Some don't.

Want to know how you purchase a firearm in Canada? Its actually EASIER in Canada. You apply for a PAL (Possession and Acquisition License) Card. Once you have your card, you walk in to a retailer, preset your Card, they run the card serial, and then you get your gun.

Fact: Up to the point of which the las vegas shooter started killing people, he didn't have anything on his record that would prevent him from buying guns. Nothing. How do you propose Gun Control laws to prevent that? What did he do before hand that could have POSSIBLY detered him from aquiring a firearm to do such damage? Some people are screaming "well don't give them the gun in the first case!" No. It doesnt work like that.

Here is a thought. Primarily, aside from the MOUNTAINS of conspiracy here is something: He had 23 some various rifles in that room. I feel like someone should have noticed that. But more so, according to the sources, He had whats called a bump stock. Its a part that similates automatic fire via physics (just google it and educate your self). All of those guns were aquired, to known date, legally and were legal up to that point. And with as much money as this guy had, again, according to sources, he could have bought himself a full auto weapon ( there is special licenses for that stuff).

I don't agree with California gun laws, New Jersey Gun laws or New York Gun laws. But there should be better scrutiny on Products like the Bump fire/ Slide Fire devices. I don't see the need for it. Its not home defense arguable. Its literally a device that was created to simulate full auto fire. Which was fun till someone used it for malice. All it takes is once.

And before someone goes off on shit like suppressors, some of you need to educated your self on how A. Suppressors work, and B. Not listen to Movie experts.

As someone who, admittedly, isn't super familiar with the industry (and it's apparent you know your shit), I'd like to inquire a couple things:

      1) Would it be feasible to restrict sales of live ammo? I can't see why anyone NEEDS to kill to defend themselves (although obviously shit happens). I can't imagine many people would continue a home invasion after taking a beanbag round to the chest, if they're even still conscious.

      2) To your knowledge; Are the amount of times your name is run through a background check counted/watched/considered whatsoever?

I'm a Canadian with a gun license and I would like to correct you on our process. To get my PAL I had to attend an 8 hour course on gun safety then complete a written and practical exam, each requiring 90% accuracy to pass. This then allowed me to purchase guns that fall into the hunting rifle and shotgun categories which can be purchased and immediately taken home. I then took an additional course that was another 8 hours with another set of exams on what we call "restricted" firearms. At this point I then had to join a gun range as a member before being able to purchase any restricted weapon (hand guns, short rifles, etc). To take home a purchased restricted weapon I had to apply for an Authorization to Transport from our national police service. At this point I was allowed to pick up my purchased firearm. There are a few more laws controlling where I am allowed to shoot which guns I own but it basically comes down to handguns can only be shot at a gun range. I hope this clarified things for you.

@attazone How can you hunt without live ammo? I mention in an earlier comment on the need for hunting, so you can ctrl-F my name if you care. Beyond that, there have been studies on how many rounds it takes to stop a person on average (not kill, just incapacitate). The average is 3-5 rounds. If a person can take 3 bullets, they can take a beanbag round.

Also in Canada there's a restriction on the amount of rounds a magazine can hold for most guns. So Gun control isn't just about the guns.

@farson135 You're misunderstanding what I said. I said restrict sales of ammo, not outlaw it. I don't think it's absurd to want to keep track of people who have the capability of that kind of damage.
I would argue that those stats are from small caliber rounds, probably a pistol, which probably doesn't have the same stopping force as a beanbag round. It may take 3 shots from a pistol to kill but that is no indication to how many baton rounds it would take to knock someone down and/or unconcious. I'd interested to see the statistics surrounding that. (I'm sure there out there somewhere, Law Enforcement uses them all the time)

@attazone Then what do you mean by restrict? If you are talking about limiting quantities, you run into the problem that shooting competitions can require hundreds of rounds to be completed. And that doesn’t include training. If you are talking about licensing, you get into the problem of reloading. That is, the personal manufacturing of ammo. It is a big thing in the US, and every major shooting sports store has a section for it. Even Academy has basic gear.

When you are designing a law, one of the questions you must ask is, how do you plan to enforce the law? A discussion topic in political science circles is, at what point does a law become so unenforceable that it is better to abandon it, and use the resources elsewhere? Economics 101, resources are scarce.

Stopping power is a myth. Shot location is what matters. A beanbag round, shot center of mass, can be even more lethal that some bullets. However, that damage comes from blunt force trauma. Bullet wounds cause blunt force trauma, direct internal damage, and bleeding. A junkie might not feel pain, but when the blood stops going to their brain, that no longer matters.

However, if you want to go for statistics-

ft/Ib force for beanbag 12g shot- 120 (max)

      ft/Ib force for 9mm- 380 (average)

ft/Ib force for .40s&w (my round of choice)- 450 (average)

      Attazone:
1.) Ammo is ammo. The fact is that Hunting and self defense are only two categories in this topic. What about competition shooting? recreational shooting? I like to go to the range just to have fun. For people who follow the law, its not fair when trying to restrict. All ammo is considered Live ammo. Bean bag rounds are also NOT available to the average consumer. And the fact that in some cases where the home invader survived, they sued the homeowner because they were shot. Thats bullshit to me. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

      2. No, its not tracked that way, but they could be flagged by the seller. As long as the check comes back clear from NICS, they usually dont have a problem. I own 7 firearms at this point but im not exactly rolling in it so its not always feasable that someone gets that many at one time. According to reports, the LV shooter purchased many of these over time, not all at once. Even New Frontier Arms (who sold him 3 rifles i believe) didn't flag him because they found him relatively normal, which is what raised concern after the fact.

      KathleenW:

You are correct. Part of this is how Gus OVERSIMPLIFIED the process here. There is much behind the process of all of it. To be fair, as an American traveling to Canada and working with our ATF contacts, I was only given the short explanation, so I want to Thank you for that correction.

Shiller: Shut the fuck up. You clearly can't contribute to a conversation so turn off your PC and grab some air so you don't look like a total ass to someone IRL. Ass hat.

One of the things we do at my job is called NICS. National Instant Criminal Search. Any time someone who lives or has lived in my area buys a gun, we get a fax from the FBI requesting their criminal history (if any), and we have three hours to run their name and fax it back. But I don't know what happens if we don't respond in time ('cause it's never happened), idunno if the default response is 'yes' or 'no.'

Strange that they give you just 3 hours to check it. Seems that could easily be forgotten and/or be messed up then you're in a bad spot with the police.

I think it's weird that they give us three hours when it's labeled "instant" and it means someone somewhere in the country is waiting for an answer on their gun permit.

A very metered and balanced discussion about Vegas, with several well reasoned view points. If only all debates could be that civil between people that aren't close friends; I get too used to the hateboxes of Reddit and Twitter and above all Facebook.
