    Ahahaha...rainbow colored ghosts...ahaha

Seriously, little kids can see ghosts. My friends daughter (4 y/o) ran into the bathroom and told her mother that the people are screaming at her to close the window. So the mother closed the bathroom window. The daughter then thanked her and said that the people stopped screaming and walked away.

I just don't get it. I think everyone has had some sort of "paranormal" experience, but there is no evidence to support the existence of ghosts. I know that ghosts don't exist so when I do feel like someone is watching me or if I think I see something, or hear something I know for a fact that it's my brain compensating for lack of other senses.  That or it's a resonate frequency created by infrasound that will then create a feeling of dread and paranoia within you.  Plus the second law of thermodynamics completely shows us, with math and numbers, that apparitions can not exist in the way that people think they do. It's not complicated, ghosts and shit aren't real, fucking deal with it.

You sound awfully certain about an uncertainty. We as a people know nothing. We constantly find new information in every field of science that shatters our previous perspective. Get off your high horse and open your mind to the possibility that our understanding of sciences is not ultimate.

Either that or take a hint from Miles and try explaining your opinion without being a condescending schmuck.

I completely understand uncertainty, but in science there are still numbers to support uncertainty. Dark matter was still a hypothesis until a few years ago when it became a theory, but even as a hypothesis there was hard evidence that it was there.  And don't get me wrong, if evidence comes to light that ghosts or something else exists then I am all for hearing it out, but until then there's no point.

Attazone, the people that believe what you believe have problems their whole lives with paranormal stuff. Try not to think about it too much, know that what you see and hear are just hallucinations. I deal with this all the time, it's just our fears creating circumstances. Should you seriously think something could harm you, it will. You'll end up with hallucinated pains, dreams, and you could even give yourself a heart attack if you're that susceptible to attack in that way. I'm no doctor or whatever but just think about what I'm telling you and stay logical.

Silent Hill was terrifying to me as a kid because of the music/sounds. I couldn't even listen to my sister play it from the other room without getting anxious!
I was like 10, which for the record, was way too young for Silent Hill.

Discussing "what is scarier to you: a psychopath, a physical creature, or a ghost" in film.

I understand the realism of a crazy person, an actual threat in real life. I watched The Strangers. I'm sure my adrenaline would be pumping if I were in that scenario, but I don't put myself in dangerous situations like that. Yes, life can throw you a curveball by placing you in an environment you can not control. I've been trained to survive, and no bitch with a goofy-ass mask is taking me out. They are human; like me.

I've never seen a monster, or a ghost... not counting my ex-girlfriend. I agree with Barbara on the jump scare angle for entertainment. Get out of here with that; because I jump like a bitch. However, that's not fear, but simply being startled. Overall, none of it frightens me when I'm watching. My only issue is when I go to sleep, my imagination takes over and makes it way worst. That is when I'm terrified. Every time I close my eyes, I see that gruesome, disfigured face.

I'll stick to comedy, action and fantasy movies.

I've got a creepy story for you guys: I never liked being in my room while I was growing up. It always felt like I was being watched and I constantly felt like someone was touching me on the shoulder or grasping my arms. One day we replaced the carpets in all of the rooms. That's when we discovered that in the middle of my room a six foot long by two foot wide piece of the plywood floor was replaced. I later found out that previous owners were really fucked up. A lot of abuse and stuff. The husband just left one day and the wife died in the house alone. Her body rotted so badly that they had to replace a section of the floor. My floor.

It's 2pm and sunny outside but Burnie's story about Geoff's house has given me major chills, so creepy! I've had my own "ghost" experience and they're still the scariest thing to me in horror movies. (In real life I believe more in the echo idea as opposed to an actual sentient being though)

In a film context, I think anything non-human has a lot more potential to be scary because they aren't necessarily bound to human/physical laws, which makes them unpredictable etc.

However. In reality, the idea of a psychopath, murderer, etc is a lot more unnerving because it is possible.
That being said, I think the best writing in films relies on that psychological aspect (think Silence of the Lambs) and thus ghosts and creatures often fail sue to a focus on gore and SFX.

The best scares for me come from playing on those very real fears that could happen in real life, and then adding a single strand of disbelief. Like The Purge, or Black Mirror. It could happen, but it's just slightly out of current reality, which makes it seem a lot more foreboding and ominous.

Personally, I find thrillers and suspense films MUCH more scary than horror films. Recently, honestly, Dunkirk frightened me far more than any horror film ever has — the German planes dive bombing the mole and the beaches for the first time was terrifying

tbh i reckon insidious was the scariest movie I've seen. like fuckin the scene where theyre talking and the camera changes angle and the demon face is right fuckin behind someones shoulder, and basically every other scene with the demon in it. they did a good job at making that thing fucking terrifying holy shit. god and when theyre in the demons room/dungeon thing. the entire movie got me in shivers. also the shining makes me cry because its too realistic and triggering af

I definitely think Insidious is one of the better horror movies of the last 10 years, along with Get Out and maybe Sinister. The slow build up with the silhouette standing next to the boys bed and the quick flash of the demon's face was good but it was kind of spoilt for me towards the end when you see him in his full glory and he's got friggin' hooves, I dunno why but it just made me laugh out loud.

Insidious was an incredible film, in my opinion, but after I saw that the demon looked like Darth Maul it sort of took away from the whole fear aspect, rather than adding to it. Personally I think they would have been better off keeping it hidden from view.

Honestly, some of my favorite horror movies are ones that are like, 2 and 1/2 star-rated found footage movies.  The acting and the script's probably not that great, but I think a lot of them make better use of their monsters in making them seem really terrifying and omnipresent.  Movies like that almost never have any actors you recognize, and I think most of them are better for it.  If they're not trying as hard to set things up, there's more time for actual spooks (and it's more likely that the ghosts/demons/whatever are gonna go HARD on wrecking characters).

Really like home invasion movies too.  It seems to me that the stakes are actually higher when the antagonist is an actual human being whose motivation for all the maiming and murdering is, they'd probably say, that they're just doing it for the lulz, and not just some supernatural force the mcs can't reasonably defeat, and even if they seem to, it's probably just going to be shown alive and well in a jumpscare at the last second.  With home invasion, it always feels like the mcs could actually WIN, and that makes you care about what actually happens until then.

Regarding Miles' comment on what's scarier: Psychos vs Monsters vs Ghosts. I would absolutely have to go with ghosts. Psychos I can escape from and outsmart, monsters I can learn their weaknesses and blind spots and get away from. Ghosts on the other hand fucking cheat; they have a ton of weird powers, they can appear anywhere, go through walls and move really quickly. I would feel utterly helpless and terrified.

The first time I remember watching a horror movie was when I was 7 or 8. My cousins forced me to watch Hellraiser. I had nightmares for years.

It did toughen me up. Horror movies, and games, just don't scare me that much. Though, it did give me a complex, like Burnie with zombies. Any time a character gets stuck in a cramped location, in a killer/monster's backyard, that gets to me.
