I remember one time that a bunch of us were trying to find a bar around midnight to celebrate a friend turning 21 and was amazed that first set of bars we tried were already closed even though they were supposed to be still open for couple more hours. This was on a Thursday though.

The international people trying to watch Game of Thrones is just like how every time Netflix gets an anime that the rest of the world has to wait for some unknown time in order to watch it legally. Also they do release the anime weekly in Japan just to stick it to the rest of the world.

HBO started with a pure online paywall version in Scandinavia before the US, we get all their content one hour after it airs in the US. Not sure about the rest of Europe. (https://www.hbonordic.com)

In Finland you can buy alcohol only between 9am and 9pm. Bars and clubs are allowed to cell alcohol after 9pm but i think that eaven those cant be on their original bottle/can. Basically you are not allowed to leave the bar whit drink in your hand.

HBO offers online watching for the nordic countries (HBO Nordic). However the limited servers makes it basically impossible to watch a new episode on release online.

Do you mean the 0200 last call at bars and I think clubs, or the restriction on buying beer from convenience stores until past noon?

It was just until this July Minnesota had no liquor sales on Sunday, people would end up driving over to Wisconsin or wherever for their beer. You could still drink at bars and restaurants, but there weren't any liquor stores open. A lot of "little" businesses complained and didn't want to make the change saying it'd cost them too much to stay open an extra day (yeah that sounds like crap to me too) so they're only open until 6pm. Car dealerships are also closed on Sundays oddly enough. We also have the 2am limit for bars and the "Three two beer" which is typically 3.2%, which is gas stations and grocery stores. Anything else is strictly in a liquor store of some sort.

I moved to Atlanta from Orange County about 5 years ago and it's still weird not seeing liquor in the grocery stores.

Also it wasn't until literally this past election that they changed the law in my county to allow sale of alcohol on Sundays.

America has such strict alcohol laws.
I have an alcohol vending machine right in my residential neighborhood about a 2 minute walk from my apartment. I could get up in the middle of the night, buy a beer, open it, and drink it on my walk home.

We only have about 2 cities you can drink in the streets. In New Orleans, Louisiana and Las Vegas, Nevada you can have alcohol in the streets but everywhere else you can not I think.

I feel bad about pirating Game of Thrones, but I would never have gotten into it the first place if I had to get a HBO subscription. I live in the UK so I could watch it on Sky Atlantic, but they ruin the experience with ad breaks every ten minutes. I have bought a lot of Got merchandise though, and turned a lot of friends and family onto the show, so hopefully it balances out.

Come enjoy the joy of Ontario.  You can buy alcohol at the LCBO(Liquor Control Board of Ontario for liquor, wines, beer, etc), The Beer Store(Popular mass-scale beer), or the Wine Rack.  As of last year certain accepted grocery stores can offer a small selection of beer.  We pay more for the privilege of restricted hours, and good luck having anything interested or good being imported.

Also the Beer Store is just owned by the big beer companies, so they have a government enforced monopoly on beer.

It is so strange in Utah, not only do we have weaker beer in the corner shops and "Wal-Marts", populated mainly by cheerleader-beer, the real brews actually cost more and can only be bought at the State Liquor Store; there are no others and there are only a few of them, and they are closed on Sunday, which granted is only a problem for us alcoholics.
We also have something infamously called the Zion Curtain where some way, some how, every eatery that sells alcohol has to literally wall-off the area that serves/has the drinks, 'cause reasons,
even in that area you cannot just buy it straight (though they call it the bar) it has to be mixed, and you HAVE to get food with it. Unless youre in a bowling alley, then for some reason you can get a pitcher of tap.
Clubs/Dives are different, but the prices are terrible, not including tip, it is far cheaper to just buy a bottle, looking at a fraction of the cost, but make sure it is Sunday...

In Indiana you can't buy alcohol on Sundays, unless it's from a bar or restaurant. It's weird to walk into a store and see aisles blocked off and then remember it's Sunday. Takes a lot of pre-planning for those looking to celebrate a holiday on the weekend or the Superbowl.

I'm in Kentucky & we have liquor sales in places like Walgreens & CVS, but you can't sell them in grocery stores unless it's a separate building/entrance. It's a leftover loophole from prohibition, I think? Basically they had to allow pharmacies (which Walgreens/CVS are labelled as) to sell alcohol for medical reasons, so now they can still sell them. It's...weird. But we also have those weird things where you can't buy it on Sunday or some cities where you can't buy it at all.

Would like to point out that HBO does have streaming services outside of the US. Here in Norway (and the rest of Scandinavia), they have HBO Nordic, where we can stream GoT (and many other HBO shows) legally. Which is awesome and I happily support them on their platform.

I calculated it out once. For my area, getting HBO legally for the three months GoT airs live, would cost in the realm of 500-600$ between setup fees, cable box device rentals, monthly fees, addon fee to get HBO, and early cancellation fees (Because I couldn't find any services which offered month by month). It's a bit too absurd to justify.

I pirate the Game of Thrones episodes, but after every season I buy the blu-ray for that season to kind of make up for it. The reason I do that is because HBO Now doesn't let me watch GoT in 1080p. I can usually watch Youtube videos or videos on RT site in 1080p, but HBO Now doesn't let me choose the quality and the quality of the video there seems like 480p most of the time. If there was an option to pre-load a 1080p quality version of the episode after it has aired, I would be happy to pay for HBO Now, but no, they don't offer such option.

*Laughs in Finnish about the alcohol laws and last calls... If you want to know dum stuff about those read our laws  laughing All hard liquors are in specific state run stores, it's a monopoly of course. Beers, siders and long drinks under 5,5% are allowed if they are made by fermenting(?not sure if the right term). If you are 18 but under 20 you can only buy up to 22% of mild alcohol, 20 and up sky is your limit. Bars must close at 2am, but if they get permission from the city they can be open to 4am, last call is 30min before closing and they throw your ass out just before they have to close.

This sounds almost exactly like Pennsylvania. We have 'Wine and Spirits' which is owned by the sate and has a monopoly on hard alcohol and we used to have to buy beer only from bars or beer distributors. But in the last year they relaxed the regulations on beer and wine and you can buy them at some other properly zoned stores. We still have the general USA rule of 21 y/o for legal drinking though.

I can't drink anymore due to medication conflicts so IDK most of the new rules as I obviously don't buy any alcohol but I've seen the changes in stores.

Fermenting is the correct word btw. Beer/wine is fermented and not distilled while most hard alcohol is fermented AND distilled.

Lol booze in other places: yeah, I live in East Texas and work in Louisiana a lot. Shreveport and Ruston have Texas-style laws, with beer and wine in the grocery stores and separate liquor stores, but the rest of the state has a hard liquor aisle in every store that would sell beer in Texas (the liquor is behind the counter in convenience stores).
