There just getting chips in there credit cards now, wow here in Canada we've had that technology like 10 years ago and now we have pay pass just hover your credit card over the machine, though there is a credit limit when using paypass to prevent thieves from robbing you broke

The reason steam amazon and iTunes gets denied so much is because of a fraud score....they actually do have a lot of fraudulent activity (ive done countless disputes for bank customers with these companies) . so because of this your card gets blocked and temporarily frozen to make sure it is you making the purchase. and if you want that block lifted permanently for those companies, you have to lift it for whatever that "high" fraud score is, Which then openes the gate for actual fraudulent activity.

I can't believe they have the swipe and signature, here (in canada) we all have chip and pin, or even just tap-pay which is like what Brandon is talking about, you just tap your card on the reader and put in the pin.

    • r0sebery FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Where are you that tap needs a pin? You just tap it and it's done.

Oh, man, i've never actually used it myself I've only seen it used by other people, so I thought there was a pin. I have the option to do it with my card but the guy at the bank said not to so you don't accidentally pay for other people's purchases, so I guess it makes sense that there's no pin.

I'm sure this has come up already but... Brandon, your card is meant for you and you alone... if it were a *proper* business account you would have less issues and there would be designated signers with their own card.

transaction history is what dictates your current and future transaction approvals.
How can a bank accurately discern what is you and what ISNT when you've got a million different people running off to different places with your card.

if it's such a big deal, call the bank's standard customer service number and ask them to place a general alert on your account that states "this card is often used at completely random places" or something to that effect.

When the automated system is about to flag a transaction, it will see the alert which will prompt for a real person to review it (after the fact).

Don't be a lazy shit; these things are outlined in your account disclosures (The banker is required by law to give these to you)... If its in the disclosures... YOU signed for it, YOU have to deal with it.
-There are many alternatives to dealing with your card being shut down, its up to you to GO in the BANK and find out what they are.

Why is the buffering so bad? I prefer to wait until the videos go on youtube so I can watch in 1080p fine, but here it buffers in 238p, and for these videos that don't go on youtube I end up giving up because it doesn't even continues to buffer, it stops in a few seconds.

I'm pretty sure the reason Steam is the source of so many "fraudulent" purchases, is people buying something, then just calling the card company and saying they didn't. Still fraud, but instead of victim they're the perp:)

It would also help if more transaction listings were clearer to what they actually are. I've accidentally called and had a charge pulled on something before because what it said had nothing even remotely close to what it actually was. I don't remember off hand what it was, but I do remember part of it was the location was somewhere far away, and not clearly associated with where I made the purchase. It wasn't until several weeks later that I was able to piece together what actually happened.

Btw, switching away from an iphone and getting your imessage number freed up has been a bitch in the past. I'm not sure if it's because of apple's shitty servers or their coding, but going from apple to android, if anyone else that was on imessage tries to send you a message, it won't show up for you at all. imessage will lock your number to their service for everyone else that uses it. You would have to change your account's phone number/start a new line, put the iphone on it, and get the phone you want on your old number/line. That might've changed in the last 3-4 years, but that's what it was like when my cousin ditched the iphone 4s he had.

In the US, final liability goes to the card holder. You have to prove that you did not make the purchase in case of dispute.

In Canada, final liability goes to the bank - they have to prove you did make the purchase in case of dispute.

As I've watched the podcast and listened to how backwards your credit card requirements are, I've always wondered how much of that evolution in Canada has been driven by that liability requirement.

It's always jarring to realize that the US hardly uses chip cards. And what Brandon was explaining where you hover your card is just called "tap" b/c you just tap your card onto the machine. I think the technical term is "pay pass" but people just call it tap. No signatures, no pins, just tap and leave. Most cards have a limit though so someone can't grab your card and buy something ridiculous without any information other than your card.
