I did some reading, and I can answer Burnie's question!

That old-timey accent was never a widespread accent among the populace, it was only present in terms of radio announcing/public address. If I recall, the microphones used at the time were particularly sensitive to the mid-range sounds, and so that accent came about as a result; it was pretty much the most effective way to make sure anyone speaking was picked up clearly. That went away when microphones were improved, and people could speak more naturally without a loss of sound fidelity for recordings. If I had to guess, I'd assume that's where that style of singing came from too. A lot of it sounds like it's a little opera-influenced from back in the day, but that one I'm not sure on. Just a guess on my part.

    The more you know!

"We've talked about doing some sort of live event." I wonder how that'll work out.

My Dad was a semi-pro bowler when he was younger. His average was only like 2 points below the minimum requirement to play professional, and I think that was because of an accident he had prior to taking his average.

Geoff's completely wrong about Audie Murphy. Read his book "To Hell and Back" or anyone else's account who spent two years on the front lines- you'll get an idea why he is such a revered soldier. Besides which, after becoming a well-known actor he came out and publicly said that he suffered from PTSD at a time when that sort of thing was widely considered to be weakness.

I've been listening to all the old drunk tanks while I work, and I came across this one today where they discussed dropping the physical media from RvB productions. I really hope they don't do this, because I hate the idea of buying something that isn't tactile. I don't even purchase software (or games) without a physical disk and box, I definitely wouldn't purchase any more RvB discs if they went to digital-only. :(

    For curiosity sake:

When I was with Intel we were told the "chimes" (ding-ding-dong-ding) that originally came out with Pentium(?) is .the. most valuable piece of music. Full stop.

The reason was the composer/musician earned credit for .every. play of the music; now the real trick was the music is incorporated as part of the Intel logo - so gets played everytime, everytime the cash register rings.

It was also always a popular store in Music departments.... (financial advice: stop producing that Symphony crap and start on ads)

true? no idea. But damn it should be true.

As far as the issues with a new moon landing, Gus is correct. Many of the engineers that worked on the project are now dead. And, the biggest screw up of all, the plans for the Saturn V launch vehicle were destroyed. I've read different accounts that say it was intentional to prevent the Russians from getting plans, and others that say it was basically a bureaucratic snafu; I lean towards the latter theory rather than the former.

So, unfortunately, it would take us a while to get back to the moon. I doubt it would take 15 to 20 years as we do have quite a bit of information on space and low/near orbit operations. Remember the Gemini project was all about figuring out how to work and maneuver in space and gather vehicle and crew performance data in order to get to the moon. In fact, all the Apollo missions leading up to Apollo 11 were really test flights to make sure things worked, from equipment to crew procedures. We took a very deliberate, measured approach to getting there.

Now, we can simulate a lot more of this than we could before, including very detailed mission and aerodynamic simulations. Back then, they did many things by hand, on slide rules and chalkboards no less. Stone knives and bearskins as Spock would say. It might take us 10 years but, not 15.

And with that, I return to my nerd cave.

Just wanted to point out the fact that most of the French players you get are most likely from Quebec or new brunswick (Canada). Or you know from "French Canada" as South park defines it.
