Monty's Legacy is RWBY this show is keeping Monty alive within our hearts i honestly am glad Rooster Teeth gave this show a chance and tried so hard to work on it. It turned out great Monty and the whole team put so much thought into its story and character development it was definitly going to be liked by hundreds of fans. When so much dedication and work is placed into something it will definitely be loved by everyone. I cant wait to see vol. 4 i hope RWBY continues on till like the year 2030 lol

to all of you siding with Shane on this whole fiasco, I urge you to read this post made by community member "Reaperof1000s" a while back. He cleared a lot of things up for me and worded it better than I ever could have.

"For those who have not read it or heard about it, here is the tweet with a link to the google doc. Original Tweet

These are my thoughts on Shane Newville's open letter to the people he refers to as "All who Treasured Monty Oum". I say this as someone who had and will continue to have an adoration of Monty, Shane, Sheena, and Roosterteeth both as a company and a collection of awesome and talented people. Most importantly I am an outsider looking in, and so do not pretend to have detailed knowledge of the inner workings of Roosterteeth. I only know what my own limited experience tells me.

I believe this letter is in very poor taste in many ways, but is not without merit in others. He makes good points about the treatment of Sheena and her role as a collaborator on RWBY. However, even these arguments have their fair share of holes.

To begin, I believe it is presumptuous of Shane to claim that he and Sheena were the only ones who truly knew the future of RWBY and what Monty had planned for it. Monty himself stated on multiple occasions that he would leave the detailed writing to Miles and Kerry, the two people he hand picked for the job despite their lack of experience in writing and anime culture. They have told their own stories about late nights and hours-long talks with Monty, something Shane seems to have laid sole claim to in his letter. While I do think that there could have been a benefit to the continuation of RWBY by bringing Sheena onto the team, this seems like an almost impossible venture without some serious concessions from Sheena and RT both. This would require her to quit her current job and work full time at RT as a creative director, a job that Shane provided no evidence to suggest she is even remotely qualified for. Maybe she would be great at it, maybe not. We will never know.

Secondly, I believe it is extremely offensive for Shane to think that he was left as the only one who wanted to continue making RWBY in order to honor Monty. He claims that everyone else just fell in line and worked on RWBY the IP, not RWBY, Monty's dream. The problem with this line of thought is the idea that continuing the show in the way Monty would have done it was impossible without Monty. Even had they brought on Sheena, she would not have been a replacement for Monty, there is no way anyone could be. I understand he had just lost his friend, and as much as I may be able to sympathize from my own experience, I will never understand his pain any more than anyone could understand mine. We all suffer differently, but for him to imply that his suffering was somehow greater and that that gives him authority over Monty's legacy is absurd.

When he was alive, Monty expressed great joy in what RWBY had become, and great excitement over what it would be in the future. Just because he is no longer here to share in that future does not give Shane the right to belittle the creation that is presented to us, regardless of any changes or deviations from the original plan. Stories grow and change with time. Shane refused to do that and he payed a terrible price for it. He claimed that others dishonored Monty by using his motto: "Keep Moving Forward" while changing everything about the way things were done in the animation department. The problem is that Shane's vision of moving forward was to stay stuck in the past. I understand why he would, since the past is where his friend is, but that is the exact opposite of moving forward.

The last point I would like to make is that Shane seemed to be laboring under the idea that it is Monty's way or no way at all. He seems to blame everyone but himself for being unable to deal with the new system that was put in place. While everyone else struggled in their own way, he seemed to believe that his problems were the only ones that mattered and that his sacrifice was the only thing keeping RWBY moving forward on Monty's path, but that path is impossible for anyone to walk alone. RWBY as a story was the culmination of Monty's ideas and everyone else putting in their effort to make those ideas a reality. It was not Monty alone that created this thing. Even the fans had an effect on the story by making Velvet a much larger part of the universe than Monty had originally envisioned. By Shane's own arguments, Monty was wrong in that this conflicted with Monty's original plans for the universe. I know this sounds condescending, but that is because it is. It is wrong of Shane to hold on to this idea that the world within RWBY should not be allowed to grow and change as naturally as possible. You can plan and plan, but ultimately if you get to the execution and something just does not work, it is not okay to force it, regardless of the original vision. He spoke about Monty having plans for Raven to attack JNPR and that this would foreshadow events to come, but from the story up to that point even under Monty's supervision, such a scene would not have made any sense. We know next to nothing about Raven and her plans, but I think her showing up out of nowhere, attacking some kids and then leaving would have been pretty out of place among the rest of the Vytal festival. I am not saying it would not be awesome, it just would not make sense with where we are at in the story. My point is that sometimes even the best ideas have to be scrapped if they don't flow with the narrative, and just putting scenes in because they would be "badass" is not a good reason to do something that would break the narrative.

TL;DR - Shane, I cannot express how sorry I am for your loss, and I can never understand your pain, but you are wrong. The RWBY that we have today would not have been possible without Monty, or you, or anyone else who worked on it. Please do not try to destroy the legacy that Monty left behind. No matter how much that story may have changed, it does not change the lives that Monty touched through his creation. It does not change the memories and relationships that have been and will continue to be created by RWBY and its beauty."

Hope this helps clear things up for all of you who are against roosterteeth

Thanks for posting this, I think this is what people need to understand about the way stories work, you can't just put something in because you want to, it has to make sense.

As far as Shane goes I agree wholeheartedly with every thing said above

    • risgord

His complaints on the animation portion made little sense to me, he kept going on about how they redid everything to make it streamlined, and switched to Maya instead of Poser. I don't know if I'm just not seeing it, but what is the issue with that, Maya is the industry standard, and any new people they hire will no doubt be much more experienced with that as opposed to Poser. And with redoing the workflow, that has to happen when they are essentially creating a full fledged Television show, but putting it online. There has to be a consistent, clear flow to the work being done or else it can't be produced on time.

I adore Monty's work and was sad when he passed, but the way his workflow was described by various other RT staff sounded like a nightmare to try and work with, crazy work hours and randomly starting little side projects or adding stuff mid-production isn't something that can coincide with a professional product that has numerous deadlines that have to be meet in order to proceed. That's not me saying that Monty was a crappy worker, I myself am horribly guilty of getting distracted or side-tracked from a important job, the difference is I'm not apart of a huge production that needs all the gears spinning in order to work. Him and Shane seems to work in a more casual state, almost like a content creator who does it as more of a hobby instead of a full time job, and that can't exist in a work environment.

I understand Shane was devastated by Monty's passing and the treatment of Sheena is something I can't go with full-heartedly until I see another source of proof other than a simple say so, but I'm not saying it didn't happen to some extent. But Shane is making out RT as some evil wicked force intent on crushing Monty's legacy, when it really sounds like they simply had to adapt and improve, and Shane decided to pin himself down to where he was when Monty died and refused to budge. Changing the story is something that just happens when creating a product, and only a fool would refuse to move to a new software simply because its not what he uses, despite the benefits that come with it. It truly sounds like it was more of him refusing to move on and improve, and less of RT being some awful demons intent on destroying a piece of art.

Honestly...I think you and every other fan of RWBY deserves to read this letter from Shane Newville, to everyone who loved Monty and His work...because what RWBY is now, isn't what Monty wanted.

    • ChrisMorray

@gunmanprice thank you for sending this. I never knew, and honestly, it's sickening. I only wish RT's crew were better people, apparently they're swallowed by corporate greed and "efficiency".

    • teamMAZE

@gunmanprice Yes, THANK YOU SO MUCH for letting us see this. Why did RT have to be so mean? And that's a polite way of saying it. I know, not too well but I do know how business people work. I've met and interacted with adults who does business, and let me tell you it's not pleasant when they become greedy and "efficient." I'm seriously disappointed in RT, and it's not only because of Shane's open letter. I was already annoyed(to say the least) when they started to go 'let's make money out this because RWBY is now really popular by giving sponsor's extra privilege and stuff,' and bringing up Monty too casually when making commercial videos. I never was that much of a fan of Monty's but I do love RWBY and thought he was a person with a healthy and imaginative mind, passion and affections for his work, and that's truly respectable. You don't find a person like that often, especially these days. To those who think that Shane's letter had started to make people have negative feelings towards RT; the letter only confirmed that something fishy was going on and any people can see that RT's way of treating RWBY had changed. Maybe it's not like that for the current makers of RWBY, but I doubt that the higher ups in RT thinks the same. And despite the fact that I can't really blame them, because they do have to make money for profit to pay taxes and give the workers their salaries etc, I can't help but feel....bitter and sad, at the possibility of Monty's vision for RWBY was changed for the sake of money and "efficiency," (whatever that's supposed to mean)

    • normalguycap

Wow. Every complaint I ever had with this show would have been avoided if they just stuck to Monty's stuff and listened to Shane and Sheena. No wonder I've started to actively dislike rwby now. Completely done with roosterteeth. They got too full of themselves.

Oh boy you guys are falling in to the oldest internet trap in the book "if its on the internet it must be true" good god that letter sounds like a disgruntled ex-employee's shot at the company that let him go. You guys are all turning you back on RT over this? WTF is wrong with you? These past few days have not been easy for the fandom that's for sure; it's hard to hear the cold, hard truths behind the production process, but it really annoys me when people start saying they hate the show and will never watch it again. A week ago they loved it with every fiber of their being. People can't kid themselves into the mindset of saying RWBY Vol 3 was a bad show just because it's not 100% what Monty had planned for the legacy of his series. The team has an amazing crew of writers and animators that brought it to life and kept the franchise going when they could have easily just said lets stop here.

The fact is, I am upset about how much of the original story was cut or changed and I certainly I don't like how the people closest to this project were treated over the course of the past few years. It is quite frankly appalling but people need to realize this is a business and things aren't always sunshine and red like roses; Rooster Teeth owns the rights to this show and will proceed to make the show how they see fit. I just don't want RT staff saying to our faces they are upholding Monty's Legacy by doing this. It pains me to say this having followed Monty's work from the very beginning, but even though he created it, it's not his show anymore.

I dont care who takes ownership of this show aslong as they give credit to the appropriate people. If monty created this show his name should be shown and credited which they have been doing ever since vol 1. I dont know how this fandom war started between RT and i still love the show and even without monty being here the show has made an incredible breakthrough with its story and animation improving. Dont understand why people are bitching about the tiny details. Im grateful that this show exists iv been waiting for it ever since i saw Red trailer release. Each volume gets better and better.

Yes we get it RT your fake as fuck with your love for Monty. Your bastardizing his work and legacy, I'm no longer expecting much for the future volumes of RWBY since the brain's for RWBY have been kicked out. Your Greed is so visible that only people who choose you as their obsession will ignore the truth. RWBY isn't just another show, and its not your show though you can think you've done good without Monty you have not. The show will always belong to Monty and sadly the only people who could have truly told the story that Monty had written have been forced out and the story has gone to the grave with Monty. I was fan of Monty before he joined RT and I still am. You toss out the best because you can't handle lip.

Okay, I cross what I said 4 days ago. I read the open letter from Shane Newville and I must say that I'm really disappointed by RT. We don't know the full story and we'll probably never know what really happened in the company but still......I think that Shane and Monty's wife, Sheena was greatly wronged to be ignored and shunned like that.

I got into RWBY on a whim. I was only just starting to get into anime, with SAO and AoT serving as my gateway animes. From there I'd moved on to Gurren Laggen, Sailor Moon (I made the mistake of trying the dub, never made it past episode three), Madoka Magica, and then Shakugan no Shana. I was looking for something new. I'd heard of RWBY before, but only in passing, and somehow my brain had put together RWBY and Rooster Teeth to come up with this idea that RWBY was some sort of wacky farm sitcom thing, or something. However, I had nothing else to do, so I decided to look up RWBY. This was shortly before the end of volume two, and, needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. I've been a fan ever since.

I then invited some of my friends over and I showed them it as they came to my house one by one. they are not fans of rooster teeth and they don't like RvB, but I showed them it and I watch their shock at this incredible imaginative trailer, and just like that Rooster Teeth got ten new fans :)

RWBY is actually what made me a fan of RoosterTeeth. I had watched RvB several years ago because a friend recommended it, but there were other things I was interested in at the time and with so many episodes to catch up on (I was several seasons behind) I eventually stopped watching it. Then a year ago I was on YouTube and saw an AMV in the suggestions box. I don't know what compelled me to click it, but I did. It was a RWBY AMV and I just could not get over how awesome the fight scenes were. When I found out the RoosterTeeth made it, I remembered how funny RvB had been when I watched it and decided try it out. I've been hooked ever since. I even got my friend into it, who then introduced her boyfriend to it and then they both pulled in another friend. Season 3 was amazing, I excited every week to see the next episode. I can't wait for Season 4. Luckily, I'll have RvB Season 14 to keep me occupied.

I used to watch RvB in it's early days but dropped off from a lack of personal involvement in the community and from irl stuff getting in the way.
The Red trailer appearing on Gametrailers brought me back to RT and I've been here ever since, actually getting involved in community things that have become some of the funnest highlights of my life.
I feel like I owe RT, RWBY and of course Monty a lot for all the good times. More so for being an inspiration whenever I'm trying to work hard on something.

with me no matter what, it will always be because of red vs. blue that i got to enjoy rwby for what it's worth (same MIGHT be said for many folks of rooster teeth). rising from the depths of the dramatic conclusion of red vs. blue season 10, the adorable ruby rose makes her debut & thus rwby came into the picture.

who would've thought that not only this pseudo-anime would make some kind of impact in the anime world, but would also come to rival red vs. blue as being rooster teeth's most popular show. in short:

if it wasn't for red vs. blue, i would not have found rwby...let alone rooster teeth

p.s.: it would be fuckin' awesome if rt somehow did some kind of crossover of the shows using the animated program for rwby.

Loved RvB back in the earlier days. Started watching around season 4 and made it to about midway through season 8 when my life pretty much fell apart. About 6 years later and i'm watching the deathbattle between Dan and Hercule and after the battle Yang walks in with probable the coolest character intro I have ever seen. After that I marathoned the first 2 volumes of RWBY and started watch the reaction videos.

Between all of the reactors i've watched, i've probable seen all 3 volumes 20+ times so far. Eventually got around to watching the rest of RvB. And then marathoned all the RT Animated adventures. Still have tons of things to catch up on from the last few year, but hope see it all some day and be here to see all of the new stuff as it comes out :)

RWBY wasn't just the next stage for Rooster Teeth, it was the next stage for Anime with their unique animation technique, the story, and the music. And it's not everyday that an Anime of this caliber is created in the United States then spreads to Japan afterwards. It's amazing what they've created here.

I put off watching RWBY for a while, because anime really isn't my thing. When I finally got around to it I binged Vol 1 and 2 and thought "Hey, this is actually pretty good". But Vol 3 blew me the fuck away. Those later episodes were simply incredible and I'm certain that Monty would be so proud of you guys. His baby is being given the love and care it deserves. Bring on Vol 4!

I feel that the spark that started all of this has blown into a fire that will burn in our hearts for years to come. We'll keep moving forward, passing this torch to all those around us.

It's sad that Monty was unable to see what RWBY would become but I'm so happy he created the show

It's not what he planned though. This is not Monty's RWBY anymore. Read this open letter by Monty's closest friend in Roosterteeth. I used to think like you, loving RWBY. Now I'm feeling sick and disgusted by Roosterteeth.
