I suppose this is what happens why you shout "DIE! PENNY! DIE!"?

I built a memorial for Pyrrha in Minecraft. The last block was placed exactly a year after her death.

Basically, I lost three (most probably four) of my favourite characters in the last four chapters.

First, Penny. Maybe they can rebuild her... if they can spare the time and energy as the world is nearing destruction and all.

Then, Neo. Best baddie ever... Though she might be alive, I doubt we'll see much of her in the future... and she might have been swallowed whole on her descent, for all we know.

Then Roman. The bad guy with the best lines of the entire show. I understand he (and Neo) had a purpose and that purpose is gone now (from a writer point of view, at least), but it stills sucks to see the funniest bad guy being robbed from us like this. Though I loved how he died. LoL

And finally... Pyrrha. Of course, the character I loved the most had to sacrifice herself. Still... Hurts like hell.  :(

I used to love Cinder. I thought she was sexy and clever, making her a very interesting baddie. Of course, I thought she was behind all this incredibly complex plan, too, but now it's clear Salem played a major role and that Cinder was her lieutenant, and not the one who designed that plan. Anyway, my love for her faded into nothingness after she murdered Pyrrha in cold blood. Now I ****ing hate her. LoL

So yes, I hate that all those characters I loved are now dead. Team RWBY and their friends and allies were essentially "Waterlooed". Crap, the rebels had it easy in The Empire Strikes Back compared to that.

But, on the other side, the real story behind RWBY is unfolding, now, and I just love the dark, desperate direction it is now heading for. I won't take any character for granted anymore. Though it's scary to know I could "lose" another character I love, all this struggle means I care even more about the characters now. I feel like as powerless, worried and hopeful as they do, and that's what a damn good story is supposed to be about. Kudos on all the people who worked on RWBY. The art, animation, sound, music, design, direction, story, dialogue and voice acting all contributed in making RWBY what it is now: a classic.

    I'm totally hooked.

So we don't really know what happened to Ozpin, but I like to think he's still alive, killing someone like him offscreen is never permanent.

But after the credits we saw Qrow holding onto Ozpin's staff before he flies off.

    Any theories to resolve that?

So ya know how sometimes people drop their wallet on their way home from work. Maybe he was getting into his car and forgot his cane and he already took his bathe and was in bed and said "F*CK IT! I'll pick it up in a couple seasons" He could have just dropped it. Weapons don't have locked partners, I just assume people who don't know how to use it would think of it as less efficient to just pick them up or steal them. It's not like we saw him get shot in the chest.

yup ok i'm calling it even though i've been consider this since before season 3 had started and season 4 has started. ruby is Qrow/Summers daughter. Summer probably just got killed on a mission with Qrow and he couldn't take it so he dumped ruby off with her uncle tai and went to work for ozpin hunting down who was behind her death aka salem directly or indirectly. till the show offically ends im going with this theory. The idea that tai hooked up with both the girls on his team always seemed greedy and just didn't sit right with me. Plus the glare Tai gave Qrow gives off a very strong "Fuck off Qrow I raised her, she's my daughter vibe."

    • caboose2394 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Well that doesn't make any sense. Yang remembers Summer and how she was a "super mom" so she would have remembered if they suddenly started calling her Yangs sister for no reason. It also doesn't make a lot of sense for Tai and Qrow to keep lying for all this time for no reason other than to purposefully create drama.

At best, Qrow would have had to give up being the father before Summer died and that doesn't make a lot of sense either.

@caboose2394 ok how about this qrow knocked up summer and did what his sister did and ran off.

summer and tai raise their daughters to together as sisters then summer dies.that make more sense

    • SunshineArmadillo

That sounds pretty cool and could make for a great story!  Especially since Qrow and Ruby are so similar and have some of the cutest scenes together.  He seems to care for her more than a normal uncle.  It makes it even more great after the revelation that he is a bad luck charm.  So that adds even more depth to the situation.  Now I really wish that is the case!

    • MaximusTheDude

I sort of understand the people who think Ruby is Qrow and Summer's daughter, but it just doesn't make sense for Summer and Tai to not be in a relasionship and yet raise a happy family together. It make more sense to just say that they WERE in a relasionship, which led to Ruby.

    Theory timeeee:

That place we saw at the end, that's where Ozpin is. He lost to Cinder in their fight but he wasn't killed, rather captured.  That woman was Cinder's leader/master of some kind, and likely the show's ultimate big baddie.  As for where they are, it seems like another dimension, a kind of RWBY-Hell.  It's probably where the Grimm come from, and it's where Raven Branwen (Yang's mom) is, because we saw her go through some weird red portal on the train and disappear.  And finally, the conversation that lady at the end was having with Ozpin was the same one as the beginning of RWBY s1 ep1, or at least around the same time.  Can't wait to see Volumes 4 and after to find out if this is all accurate!

  • Kerisato

I can die happy now (maybe). The fight between Ozpin and Cinder was nothing less than epic, even if short. My only question: Did Cinder actually win? And why did Amber not use that kind of power against Cinder, Emerald and Mercury?

I hate myself now for coming across a spoiler about Pyrrah Nicos. But I'm glad I remembered it wrong (I somehow thought all of Team JNPR got offed). With Jeane just pleading for Ruby to save Pyrrah and then Ruby watching Pyrrah die, it was nothing less than tear jerking. Here I thought it would be just a glorious fight against innumerable Grim, but nope. It was a one-on-one with Cinder, and their last dialogue right when Ruby made it to the top of the tower made it much more tragic.

Love how the opening credits for Season 3 now made sense; Ruby lost two of her friends, her sister lost her arm, their team is disbanded, they lost their school and their entire kingdom is now dark. It's a whole new, scary, world for a littler girl to live in. (And Yang looks completely defeated now.. When she called out to Ruby, with eyes on the verge of crying. I know it's an anime but darn that was moving.

For some reason I get the feeling Ozpin is still alive. That woman talking in the final scene (chilling how she went from delivering a message filled with hope, to one filled with hate) said Ozpin would to watch everything he worked for fall apart. And each the time the Professor was mentioned by someone it was only that he was missing. None of them know where he is but no one seems to think Cinder killed him. So I'm sticking with my theory that Ozpin's semblence has something to do with Eternal life. Though maybe not invulnerability. (So many times there's been hints, from Professor Port, to Goodwitch, to Qrow, Ironwood, to Ozpin himself.)

An incredible end to an incredible season. Monty would be proud, I think.

Also going back penny had a plan i reckon that was her plan. It was a double think about it.

penny is part of atlas corp and hence is in their data base so she could also set up the ties too and pick Pyrrha, she places a double in her place and controls it then she puts up a good fight and bang she dies. plus she is an AI and she would've calculated a way to dodge that attack if she didn't plan on it faking death.

On the one hand I love this series and hope it never ends, but on the other, I really want to see team RNJR kick Salem's ass while the loss of Penny, Pyrrha, and 1/5th of Yang is still fresh in mind.

Since they're traveling to Haven, I have a sneaking suspicion that the series will go through ALL the kingdoms, and maybe even past that (there's a lot of allusion to nation-on-nation war going on ) before we get any closure.

Strangely enough, I feel more concerned about Yang's arm than the two major protagonist deaths. I mean, sure it's sad that Pyrrha died, but we KNOW that that's a permanent development. In comparison, it's anyone's guess whether Yang will get a cybernetic arm, regrow her original arm, or simply live without her right arm altogether.

Damn, October 22nd is on my calendar and can't come soon enough.

Qrow probably came to the conclusion that he found the cane (what you call a staff) and the lack of Ozpin meant that instead of being killed Ozpin was Imprisoned (likely by this Salem character) and took upon himself to find Ozpin and return to him his weapon.

**SPOILER ALERT: DO NOT READ UNTIL FINISHED WITH VOLUME 3. CARRY ON**

A part of me really hates to see a favorite character killed and another beloved character permanently mutilated, but I'm also glad to have creators who aren't so afraid of upsetting their audience that they can't maintain narrative stakes. There's not much suspension of disbelief because there's no reason to disbelieve that in war against an opponent truly bent on destroying them, our heroes will suffer actual casualties. There are narratives in which a lack of casualties is acceptable, but this is not one. Joss Whedon did not kill off the main characters during Firefly's run because he needed all of them for the dynamic of the show, but once the movie was the last thing he could do with the franchise, the predictable necessity of character deaths came to fruition. Here, the dynamic of the show is, well, dynamic, and the first death of a close friend and teammate forces the characters to develop and for some, grow; for others, wilt away. And while the same first part of me that hated to watch Pyrrha die would love to see her come back, even if Miles and Kerry can find a canonically sound way that doesn't ultimately feel forced and like cheating, if she ever returns, the permanence of loss would be nullified and we could never again expect our heroes to do anything but win again and again and again with no losses. In the end, Pyrrha must die and stay dead.

    • Kerisato

A little trick for posting Spoilers. In the text box there are several options you can click to change your type. You can do Bold, or Italic, or Strikethrough. You're familiar with bold, I assume. But to the far right, by the emoji there is a eye that's crossed out. That's for Spoiler talk. Works like so: I don't want to spoil it so I'm blocking this out. In order for it to work you have to click it first, then go to the text box and type. Then click it again. to revert back to visible text. Can be a bit difficult at first but I hope it helps.

A lot of people on here seem to think that this episode was poorly written, was unnecessarily dark, etc. ,etc. But their reasoning is flawed at best, 1. Pyrrha was always supposed to die. The whole point of setting her up as this prodigy was so that when Cinder killed her, it would show just how powerful she really is. If the best of the best cant stand up to her, who can? Not to mention how important it is for Jaune's character, with the way he's been portrayed, he would die for his friends in a heartbeat. So being helpless to save his closest friend and mentor is one hell of a development point for him. The timing is perfect as well, the bad guys landed a major blow, overrunning Beacon, temporarily or maybe permanently taking Ozpin out of the picture and killing the best that Beacon had to offer. It shows that no one save maybe the main 4 girls are safe. Lastly, it caused Ruby to discover her Silver Eye abilities, something that even after only three volumes seems like a bit of a deus ex machina to some people, leaving the reveal for later would have only made more people feel that way. Some people don't realise that Pyrrha's death, as devastating as it was, is an extremely important turning point in this story and it's character development. And as a result, those people for better or for worse get angry, a few leave, others don't , and it all ends up as a major dividing point for the fanbase.

    2. The actual fight between Cinder and Pyrrha seeming a bit BS. Someone down below mentioned the limit on how much aura a huntsman/huntress has being undefined and inconsistent. But we cant forget how much Pyrrha used her semblance in the fight plus how much damage she took plus all of the fighting beforehand. That would put a lot of strain on a persons aura, I mean, look at the Yang V Mercury fight, it didnt take Yang to long to deplete Merc's aura so that kind of rules out the whole aura thing.

    3. The "deus ex Silver Eyes" moment. People use this one a lot when it comes to arguing about this episode. But if we look back, it's been foreshadowed quite a bit, by Ozpin and the Volume 2 OP placing some focus on Ruby's eyes and of course Monty saying early on in production that eyes were extremely important to RWBY's story and that we would find out about that soon enough. Don't blame Miles and Kerry if you didn't pick up on the importance of silver eyes. As for the why didnt it activate when she saw Penny's body, there are two counter arguments. One: there wasn't any bad guys nearby at the time and no one was in imminent danger (at least until the Grimm showed up but that was a while later). And two, Ruby didn't watch Penny die, but she did watch Pyrrha die. Believe me, there's a massive difference between watching your friend die and finding out later. We still don't know how Silver Eyes work so we can't exactly go around criticising the writers for that.

    4. Cinder. This one comes up a lot. Cinder has little to no backstory and her intentions are still unclear. That much is true, but it doesn't necessarily mean that the writing is bad, just that they either haven't had time to expand on her and will at a later date, or that maybe they want Cinder to be mostly a mystery for some big reveal down the track. As for how powerful she is, for all we know, she was taught by Salem how to control the maidens power to its fullest potential, note "I will use it in ways you never could have imagined".

TL;DR 1. Pyrrha needed to die for plot and character development, 2. Pyrrha's aura was most likely already depleted, 3. Silver eyes was nowhere near as out of the blue as people say it was and 4. Cinder's backstory and defined power levels may be underdeveloped for a reason.

So, you're saying that part of the entire purpose of Pyrrha was for her to be jobbing? It sort of makes sense, but it's not entirely unfulfilled without her. I mean, we see that she pretty evenly matched Ozpin, and it is implied that she beat him. Does her beating Pyrrha really demonstrate how strong she is? Ozpin serves a better jobbing character for that purpose. But the necessity of her death for the development of the other characters is completely valid. I have my own ideas, as penned above your comment, as to the similar importance of her death (well, any character death would have worked for my laid out purposes) for creating and maintaining the narrative stakes.

@Elektragraff It's not that she killed Pyrrha. It's HOW she killed Pyrrha. Think about it: Cinder had no experience in wielding the Fall Maiden's COMPLETE powers. And yet, she was able to defeat Ozpin, get crushed under several tons of metal, and still beat Pyrrha despite how much build-up Pyrrha had as being a badass. The surviving the crush thing only bothered me because the last Fall Maiden fell from ONE ARROW TO THE BACK.

      Error 404: Logic Not Found

Admittedly, Season Four Episode One does a good job of explaining everything in a way that counteracts Cinder's depiction as a Mary Sue. Still, this episode had a very poorly executed ending overall, and Cinder's Mary Sue-ish portrayal was one big reason for that (another was Ruby's Eleventh Hour Superpower, which ironically helped take away from Cinder's image as a Mary Sue).

@Bismuth73 actually if you think about it, she DID have time to learn some of Amber's Maiden powers, as she had stolen some of them beforehand. True they weren't all of them, but she did have some that she could learn to wield and use. That was the whole reason Amber was put in the vault under Beacon, because Cinder stole some of Amber's powers, and Ozpin and Co. was worried that Cinder was the last thing Amber would remember and they didn't want the Fall Maiden's powers to fall to the wrong hands. There's also the possibility that wasn't even the true potential of the Maiden's powers too and that was just what Cinder learned to control and use, except now she has more power to work with.

@Bethylee Yeah, I get what you're saying. The biggest reason I have a beef with this is the execution.

They have the last Fall Maiden be defeated by one arrow to the back (without mentioning that said Maiden was relatively new at using her powers, which is clarified in Season 4 episode 8) while she had full use of her powers. Meanwhile, with Cinder, she is able to defeat Ozpin and Pyrrha (although season four reveals that Ozpin is "alive" in a non-corporeal state, it also confirms that Cinder did kill him inasmuch that she slayed his physical form) back to back with little to no signs of exhaustion. If more effort had been put into justifying this contrast, it would have worked. But nope; Cinder survived Ozpin and several tons of metal because "Fall Maiden magic". Without anything to show what made Cinder survive better (again, with the Fall Maiden's FULL power) or what made fighting Pyrrha and Ozpin less of a strain on her powers (key word there being "and"), a big hole is left in the episode's logic. And Mary Sue characters are characters that break continuity and/or poke holes in logic for the sake of furthering their ends.

THAT is why Cinder Fall was a Mary Sue during this episode. Although Season Four justifies this after a while, this episode as it stood when aired dropped the ball in the scene of Pyrrha's death.

i cant waits to see what a waits us in season 4, personally, i'd like to see them touch up on the relationship between yang and her mother as well as explaining the origins of these red swords. also if you watch closely during the battle in season 11 where yang looses her arm you'll see some sort of foreign symbol on the dudes shoulder, i looked at Japanese words and found a word that closely resembles the symbol, the word translated means 6. could this mean there's 6 people in total with these swords? another thing i spotted out going back to season 2 episode 11 where yang's mother saves her is the symbol on top of yang's mother's helmet, it almost resembles some sort of T that is twisted, now looking back at other peoples symbols like ruby it seems to somehow describe their powers.

Salem, maybe the light is fading and yes, the dark returns. It's true that the world is unforgiving and our most brilliant lights now cease to burn. Our legends have scattered, day and night have severed, but is hope and peace lost forever?

But you disregard our smaller souls? Salem beware, a story will be told and victory is in a simple soul!

Have you guys heard this song at the end during the credits... Salem really hates Ozpin but she kinda makes a point with lyrics like - have you no shame signing them up for you war, training them to fight what they can't beat-. I know the first part is pretty true and the second is opinion of Salem but it's just so cool to listen to the lyrics
