Sweet episode. So many questions answered (specifically Emerald and Mercury's backstory). I wonder though, Adam's not the leader of the White Fang, is he? Blake said that the White Fang's recent leader rose to power with his own ideas for the group, but Adam's ideals grew over time, out of necessity, while he was already working with them. So is he more a lieutenant or something?

When Cinder first pulled out her bow and turned it into swords, my first thought was instantly of Pit from Kid Icarus. Too much Smash Brothers.

I've been wondering about the opening trailers for RWBY for a while now and noticed that all of them have that giant red ball thing at some point. Only recently did I realize it could be an Eye of some kind. So glad to see it's more than a prop piece after watching it appear on Cinder's glove. But where did she get that? And what is it?

I'm surprised at how much I don't care after having watched this. Just cliche after cliche. The art is interesting though. I think my gripe is with the combat. Style over substance. It's all attack and wait. There isn't much pro activeness. Characters just wait to be hit. Idk, maybe I'm too harsh with this one. At least this ep moved some stuff along without the endless expositition of other eps.

    • TheAurian

I'll be honest, I kind of agree. I feel that fight choreography don't have intent for fighters. It's hit and wait, hit and wait, rather than hit, react, block, react, etc. And then the only reason certain fighters get hit is because they are forced to be hit for the sake of moving the fight forward, as opposed to being punished naturally for a mistake. What fighter would turn their back on 2 aggressors to take care of one? Doesn't even make any sense. I wouldn't necessarily say style over substance though. Monty's fights was pretty stylish, and all character's had a unique flows when they fought. It's really difficult to recapture that.

i know i'm overthinking this, it is a hobby of mine, but if the maidens are so much of a target, (yes i get that no one is supposed to know about them) why wouldn't they have a bodyguard or two? here's a point in that favor, say the maiden (pick any of them really, even tho we've only seen amber) is around other people when she gets attacked whether by grimm or people like cinder. A maidens purpose is to help/ protect and while she could get away with using her powers in moderation perhaps, an awesome display in defense of others would certainly produce waves of rumors. having someone to watch her back would decrease the temptation to use her powers and help fight off those who would steal them if she does "show off" for whatever reason. hmmm. i seem to be sounding more like general ironwood; "throw some soldiers at <insert problem here>! if that don't work, use MOAR soldiers!"

    • Overtoad FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I think Qrow may have been her bodygaurd. I don't know how to explain his presence otherwise. He's just not entirely reliable from what we've seen. Also, since their existence hinges on secrecy, an ever-present armed escort would probably have been a little conspicuous.

Interesting, one end of Amber’s staff appears to have Wind, and the other Fire. Perhaps I'm reading too much into this but, didn't a henchman in Volume 1, Chapter 1, specifically ask for "Burn uncut" at the Dust til Dawn robbery? The character we now know as Cinder only gained half of the maiden’s power. I'm guessing it might be the Fire half, and theorizing that Cinder gave Roman a shopping list. If that is true, Cinder must have been angry when Torchwick threw it at Ruby and shot it.

The only importance to this, is that I recall Monty Oum stating something like; that Dust was kinda like Materia in other FF games (not solid on the quote). So, I'm wondering if there is significance to Amber's selection of Wind and Fire as part of her being the Fall Maiden, or if it was something more personal to her. Also, wondering if Cinder requires this as some sort of outlet or enhancement for her 'acquired power'. She seemed to be using her portals, and some sort of Horizontal Glyph thing back in that fight against Glynda.

So, could all Seasonal Maidens have 2 (elements?) Dust attributes that favor their season? Also, not sure if there is any significance to these observations.

Apologies Crichton98 I implied Semblances with "or if it was something more personal to her." Reading it over, I see that was not very clear on my part.

I'm thinking that the ability to use and control Fire was something else. Not Semblance, because Amber's Aura reaches Zero during the fight (she even gets hurt), and she still uses her Wind, Fire, and Lightening abilities to fend off the attackers. I can only speculate at this time, that the Lightening is a combination of Wind and Fire. Perhaps the staff is something used to focus or enhance those abilities (typical wizard staff kind of thing). As Cinder has only acquired half of Amber's Maiden Powers, she would only need "Burn uncut" for now.

This is still just speculation on my part.

    • Mazekial

My current guess is the whole windstorm/lightningstorm, levitation, and telekenisis-lite ordeals are the actual powers of the Fall Maiden, and the two Dust crystals were the source of the Fire and Ice Powers. Well, I assumed the other one was an Ice Dust crystal, but it might be a Wind Dust crystal, now that I think about it, and maybe the ice thing is another Maiden Power? Fall can be cold sometimes, I guess.

I'm also almost positive Cinder's fire powers come from weaving Fire Dust into her clothing (notice how during the second Adam scene her sleeve lights up as she lights her swords on fire). I also happen to notice her crystal anklet is black during the flashback sequence in this episode, but is more blue and ice-like during her first appearance in "Ruby Rose". Maybe that's for Ice Powers if I'm right about Amber's staff?

      Speculation is fun

@ Mazekial Re: (notice how during the second Adam scene her sleeve lights up as she lights her swords on fire). That scene looks like the ouline of the glove that she used to steal the maidens powers. In the fight in Volume 1, Chapter 1 we see both sleves and across her torso light up (along with both Cinder's eye's) It seems that her red dress in that scene has evolved from the one sleve we see in this episode. It is as though her clothing captured the maidens power and gave it to the wearer. Could Cinder have been talking to her dress Kill la Kill style?

cinder's voice actress pauses too much and lacks a bit of personality. Well pause you all did pause very well pause... Including pause the driver. The pausing for exaggeration is a bit over done. I can tell she's reading and it sounds like it and even she is reading a script it shouldn't sound like it. The character has potential. Less pausing and smoother transitions between words would make her much better. Other than the voice actress is doing fine. Just a tip from one actress to another.

Yeah, I've always been a little "eh" of Jessica's performance as Cinder in past volumes for basically what you said, especially when she's trying to sound cocky. It makes her sound too obviously "I am sneaky person. Fear my sneaky."

However there were some really golden nuggets in this episode that gave me hope for her performance to get better, especially if somehow Cinder stopped being ten steps ahead of her opponents. That "know your place" made me more scared of Cinder's capabilities than anything else she's ever said or done in the series, and that first conversation with Adam made her sound very...warm and diplomatic. Heck, I personally would have voted for Obama if Cinder was the voice of his PR department.

Also, that seemingly internal monologue she was having with an invisible entity during one of the blackout cuts was very well done.

TL;DR, Jessica's performance is at its best when she's not trying to sound cocky, in my opinion

I just want to say how much I hate the "Stolen powers from special individual" trope. It feels stupid, violating, not possible powerwize (this is not how powers work son), and to be honest lazy. A lot lazy. Characters with skill? Depth? Nop stolen super special powers, sold. And I hate to see that the main focus of the story is heading there for now, to this and the "magic maidens of doom that are actually useless in battle if they are anything like the one we saw". Also massive mind control to all the elite hunters? Sure that too.

    • Average_Luck_Human_Being

To think that your individual powers, for which you worked so hard to master, can just be stolen from you is certainly unpleasant. But somehow I think it may only work for the maidens powers and not for Semblances. Otherwise Cinder could just have stolen dozens of Semblances from normal weaker people and would have become completely overpowered. Also Cinder might have a special connection to the Fall Maiden's power, so only she was able to do it.
I agree that if any power could be stolen without much effort, that would lead into complete chaos and would imo not be good for the plot. But as I said, I really don't think it's that easy.

I also agree with you that the maiden was defeated quite easily. She was powerful (after all she stood her ground against three extraordinarily strong fighters), but not overpowered and I think that is good. Maybe the Maidens poweres are not in the first place meant for fighting and she can do a lot of other stuff that is useless in battle. After all the maidens purpose is to help people and not to kill them.

    • smokeytheber

If I may add to this conversation, i agree with Average_Luck.  The powers of the Maidens are not like Semblances.  Where every person is born with a Semblance, the Maidens' powers are transferred, making it possible to be stolen if given the correct means.  And with your statement about the Maidens' powers being more for helping people, I also agree, because the old man who gave them their power did so because they helped him with common tasks needed for survival, like tending crops or caring for a home/family.  They may have their use in battle, but that is not their primary function.  Whereas this is what I believe, I still may be wrong.  There is still so much about RWBY that only the amazing people of Rooster Teeth know about, so I'm sure that we'll learn more about these things when more volumes come out, and from what I've heard, there's gonna be a lot of them.

In Vol. 3, Chapter 1. I was confused then, and I'm even more confused now...

Why was Mercury smelling that boot?

You can tell it was "an out" for Emerald, to keep them from hanging with Team RWBY; because, Emerald would know that he doesn't need to shop for those. Funny then, but now, you see that these things were hinted at from the beginning.

I like how backwards compatible this show is.

So after this episode we know that Emerald's semblance is definitely illusions, which means that she's responsible for all of the illusions this Volume. But what about back in Volume 2 when Neo and Roman escaped using that glass-illusion-teleport thing? That was probably Neo, right?Would the writers be dumb enough to give two of the antagonists illusion powers? I'm thinking no. That wasn't an illusion per se. Now I'm thinking Neo's semblance isn't illusions in and of themselves, but the ability to teleport and simultaneously leave a mirage of her and the area directly around her behind to confuse people, kind of how Blake leaves a copy of herself behind to not get hit. But instead of being thrown back and leaving a physical copy that can explode like Blake does, she leaves that glass mirage thing and can teleport to anywhere within a certain range. Though there is only one obvious example of this "ability" to work off of, so everything I just said is pure conjecture. And if anyone said this before me, I haven't had the time to browse all 1500 comments, so I apologize if I'm just repeating old ideas.

    • Drake_The_Gunman FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

I'm thinking maybe the glass thing was an effect of dust, rather than semblance. In episode 11 of volume 2 (I think that's right, not sure) after Yang got her ass handed to her by Neo. Neo used the same type of teleportation, just without the mirage.

    • WizardOf

i think the glass effect and 'teleportation' is neo, and emerald can effect idividual minds/

I'm thinking that the strengths and weaknesses of Emerald's and Neo's powers are opposite. We know that Emerald's illusions are very good, but only work on a few minds at a time. I'm thinking that Neo's illusions are easier to spot, but can affect more people.

    • JaseAlex FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Scary Version: is that Neo doesn't have the Illusion power we saw. That it belongs to Torchwick and that's why we haven't seen a "true illusion" (only Emeralds Hallusinations) since. But, it doesn't explain her eyes or where she goes when we don't see her. Also, How did Neo know how to take down Yang so effortlessly?

It's just a guess. And that's all I'm gonna say about that.

When the medics rushed onto the field to help Mercury, if you look at his leg you can see his pants have a rip and a large gash on his skin from where Yang "hit" him. I also think this could lead to some Absolutely MAD Qrow action possibly leading to alot of snooping around and maybe finding Mercury and having a showdown.

Wait wait wait. I'm confused. If Qrow fought them, than how did he not recognize them when they entered the tournament?

*It's been a fair amount of time since then - both between the 'Black trailer' and start of the first episode, plus the 6-7 months between then and now, roughly
*There was some kind of visual blur effect going on, when he looked at Cinder about to escape. That plus how swiftly things moved, means he didn't get very good looks at details
      *'Possibly' worsened by drunkenness

A lot of factors, it seems

Qrow says "Your little infiltrator isn't just another pawn". He certainly doesn't mean the Queen. Maybe a rook or bishop. I think Raven is the hive queen. That's who Cinder was talking to.....maybe =)

I'm thinking raven as well, based off of the similarities between her portals and the magic Cinder is using, which utilizes the same visual effect multiple times.

I can't believe that no one else has talked about this, but Raven's mask looks like a more stylized version of a White Fang mask. Does this mean that Raven is a faunus? Is Yang half-faunus?

Also, if you guys are right and Raven is the bad guy, that could potentially mean Yang joining her and doing a whole Anakin/Obi-wan/Revenge Of The Sith type thing, which could be really interesting.

that part at the end of the intro when RWBY all separate from each other totally makes sense now. After seeing the preview for this weeks, I'm worried now. It may get much more interesting and that will make good content but they feel so real now and I'm going to be sad when I see that. Obviously it'll be temporary but I'm still worried.

Not satisfied with the 1 minute 40 second intro? Don't worry, Season 4's intro will be 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

Still, this was a good episode.

Epic backstory explanation of the villains and parts of the previous episodes.

I don't like this season's intro, so I hope if season 4's intro is really that long, its at least decent.
