TL;DR: This fight scene is great, but the fight scenes in the actual series are not. I wish they were like this one.

This scene here convinced me that the new style CAN look awesome. The momentum combat, no crazy instant jumps and some interesting new combat styles which demonstrates how Ruby has grown. This has NOT been shown in all subsequent episodes. Momentum seems to be an afterthought, the dialogue in combat all feels very stilted and has strange pauses.

The worst part is that people are now just jumping 50 feet in the air at a whim. In the fight against the Geist and on the boat, all characters have just jumped straight into the air without any creative use of weapons or momentum. Worse is how they sometimes just hover in the air for extended periods of time. This scene here does it a little bit, such as at the start and the very end, but never to a degree that it feels wrong. The fight in ep 3 with sun and Blake just feels so bad because they hover in the air for entire seconds with no consequence to momentum. These fights may make sense frame by frame, but when you watch them in motion it all looks wrong.

That said, I do love how the show LOOKS. Each individual frame looks gorgeous, and they've really stepped up detail in these episodes. Grimm look even cooler, and the new character designs are spot on. It's just a pity that when everything starts to move it all falls apart. On the other hand, the standing/walking around dialogue scenes have improved immensely this season, as shown in ep 2. The extra detail they have really helps with facials and fluid character movement.

This episode gives me hope that maybe, just maybe, the fights can be salvaged. This fight here is one I can straight up say is great, so it pains me that this hasn't been emulated in the actual episodes. I love the new plot, character designs, most of the dialogue, scene designs and world building. It's just such a massive shame that all of those things fall into pieces when a fight scene starts.

I love Ruby. I want it to be good. It can be good, and this new animation style has the potential to be better than all previous seasons. As it is though, the only reason I'm watching is because I'm a fan of the previous three seasons and I like the plot. Each week, I come to see if I get what I'm looking for in this series. So far, only episode 2 has really impressed. Guess which episode didn't have a fight scene in it? Yeah.

Go for it, Rooster Teeth. I know you can do it.

      Yes, I agree.

To some extent, Ruby has an excuse, but the rest of the characters don't  blake...

Sometimes, it just seems to be over-complicated, like at 1:54, where Ruby takes a really roundabout way into the sky.

Also, some of the animation feels a little fast to me; but maybe that's just me.

Mostly, though, I'm watching RWBY for the storyline, and it's really good. I particularly appreciate Yang and Blake's part. The only part that seemed a little strange was that the comedic parts in the "evil cult" scene in the first episode. It's hard to be scary if you're too funny...

Apart from all that, it's going great, and I'm eager to see what comes next.

Everyone keeps saying that Chibi is just wall paper to cover up the harsh reality of RWBY, and how cruel it's going to become and that when we return to the premier of Volume 4. It will get much darker and serious I agree it will, but you know what RWBY was always implied that it is a coming of age story after all yeah there is going to be more serious elements, and things will get more intense but you know what there will be other stuff too RWBY hasn't changed that much will be more light hearted stuff comedy, and great character development, conversations, new locations new characters, new Grimm, and fight scenes it's like life there are ups and downs but come let's be honest we knew stuff was going to happen do you really think that Jaune and Pyrrah were always going to be happy together and that Arkos was always going to be around, or the fact that Yang is a beloved, pretty, awesome and beloved character, and that she was going to win every fight by being cool and getting angry when things weren't going her way. (like the fight with Junior in the Yellow trailer) That is insane a lot of shows go threw this process of change and growth I am sad and disappointed that Pyrrah is gone and that Yang is one arm short, but I still am going to continue this awesome journey I hope you people can push threw this tragedy and join us for Volume 4. I know it sucks to lose Pyrrah she was a lot of people's favorite character but death happens I really wished they had kept her alive and explored her character more like her family or how she felt bad about Penny and felt guilty, but things don't always turn out the way you want it to we should have known this if you model a character after a tragic character like Achilles you know something bad is about to happen. It would be like if I modeled my character after Romeo or Juliet anyway R.I.P Monty Oum I wish you were here to see your show grow we will miss you. EDIT It will be interesting how the cast deals with the death of a friend and how they talk about how it changed them forever.

Pyrrha is NOT gone, there's nothing to prove that so don't pass opinions off as facts. We also don't know what happened to Ozpin. Yang, being disarmed(lol) on the other hand had indeed been verified canon. If Pyrrha dies the show will need to begin HEAVILY focusing on Jaune even more than before. Arkos is by far the best plot happening in the show in my opinion (which is not easily done as this show is amazing). Ruining Arkos would almost definitely render this show disabled watchability-wise, just as killing Glenn from the Walking Dead when everyone  thought he had died would have for that show.

takecareofKnives I understand where you are coming from, but really think about this Pyrrah kissed Jaune implying that she is going to die there was epic music playing she was nervous coming up the elevator she ran out of aura she had her weapon destroyed and she was outmatched. She got shot threw her heal ala Achilles and she had her left chest impaled with an arrow ,and she was disintegrated plus Ruby saw the whole thing and cried. Did you ever think that that's how people die in this universe Salem says in the beginning of episode 1 Volume 1 that man was born from dust so maybe when humans die in the World of Remnant they become dust again. Just like the GRIMM so don't you think she might passed on some how the voice actress Jen Brown even confirmed Pyrrah was gone However, I am not completely delusional. I know that she might come back as a voice or she might come back to guide her team or even Jaune or even she was captured. That is a possibility now you could say that there is magic in this world and they could use that to bring Pyrrah back or they could visit where people go to die in this universe. Like Remnant version of heaven however knowing Rooster Teeth and their story's in the past like Red vs Blue that probably won't happen they want the story to be mature. RWBY is a coming of age story why would they just bring her back after a heart breaking moment like that plus think back to what I said do you think Pyrrah and Jaune where going to be happy together, and that nothing can go wrong that is absolutely ridiculous like I said PYRRAH IS MODELED AFTER ACHILLES FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!! A TRAGIC CHARACTER! besides there are other characters and plot elements to watch don't get so angry because your perfect love story didn't turn out the way you wanted it to. This is a coming of age story there is going to be death and lost it happens I love Pyrrah she was one of my favorite characters. I wish they did more stuff with her character. I think they could have explored her story and chracter like her family or feeling guilty over what happened to Penny ,but stuff happens rather you like or not however. I am still going to enjoy RWBY besides Rooster Teeth will probably reward us for going threw that traumatic event. ( FUN FACT: did you know that originally Jaune was supposed to be the cause of Pyrrah's downfall, and after she dies Jaune is supposed to view it become more sadden by the event, and was supposed to go threw a character growth and become stronger, but after Monty passed away the scene was scrapped and their also was supposed to be a fight between Raven and team JNPR To foreshadow the events to come but it was scrapped too.) and one more thing sorry to tell you this but, try not spoil other shows that have nothing to do with this show it's annoying and rude.

I dont mind pyrrah being dead (I know ill probably get hate for saying but its true) I always found her to be a bit to much of a power house kindda like superman or batmans utility belt, also this now gives a reason  for jaune to get even strong which we know he has the potential for

    • IronLotus1997

slasher40k you have the right to an a opinion on how you feel but to be honest all characters are kill able in there own way no one is unkillable. Rooster Teeth for the most part has done a great job at making their characters really powerful but not unstoppable in my opinion Pyrrah was just a great fighter that was very skilled and powerful.  In her own way not to mention she had a lot of practice and training all the characters are powerful in their own way kind of like the Jedi and Sith of Star Wars. They are all powerful and deadly in their own way but they are not unkillable or unstoppable they are warriors but they are also mortal warriors as for Superman well that's why he is called Superman. He is super powerful but he is not unstoppable Superman is not supposed to be relatable he is an alien not a human who is very powerful but despite being so powerful and scary he chooses to do good things with his powers instead of destroying everything he comes into contact with like Darkseid. ( I highly recommend you check out Superman the animated series it's pretty cool in my opinion and you will get to see the powerful villains that he encounters) He will always find a way to solve a difficult solution, and never give up that's why people look up to him he chooses to fight for Earth and risk his life for people he barley knows plus and has saved the entire galaxy multiple times. He fights villains that are so powerful they could destroy the entire DC Universe. So Superman has to be powerful for a reason considering the power level of the villains he fights there are situations though where ordinary people can beat Superman plus in the DC Universe. There are other alien races that are super strong and have advanced technology like Darkseid and Brainiac. ( who by the way are some of the most if not the most powerful enemies of the Justice League) to counter Superman he has been beaten pretty badly. Don't believe me watch the Justice League animated series and the Justice League unlimited series. Plus if you think think Superman is ridiculously powerful try reading about my favorite DC character Martin Manhunter, and his powers to give you an idea he once beat the entire Justice League in one fight including Superman. As for Batman he needs that utility belt he needs that to help him when he  fights crime how is that overpowered?
many times Batman's villains have found ways to beat him with his utility belt. In the comics, and the Batman the animated series but of coarse Batman finds a way to adapt to the situation, and beats them anyway. Batman's foes are very powerful and clever plus he is human Batman needs these gadgets to help him do his job. It's like let's say your a plumber, and you where hired to fix a toilet but you did not have any tools now you might be able to fix the toilet. You could call someone else to get there tools but why would you not need tools to do your job it doesn't make since plus Batman is a multi Billionaire. Of coarse he is going to have a huge variety of gadgets it makes sense and it's necessary for the story humans use tools to help them do their jobs. It's a part of life plus remember this Batman has foes that are very smart like the Riddler. Who uses advanced technology and tools and also because he is a genius as well to make his puzzles and riddles. Batman also has foes who are extremely rich and have gadgets of their own. So this whole thing with Batman's utility belt being over powered is not true. I hope this statement cleared things up I hope you enjoy Volume 4 when it's ready see you there.

Honestly, the series really begins at Volume 4.  Everything leading up to this has essentially been a prequel.  I have no issue with that, but the people openly shitting on the first three volumes should keep in mind that the story hasn't actually started yet.  We've basically just seen some really exciting background information.

RWBY has an amazing complex cast of women and certainly crushes the Bechdel Test. It's refreshing to watch animation which doesn't cater to the male gaze or reinforce gender stereotypes. Can we look forward to seasons with the same type of complexity in characters and casting when it comes to people of color? It would be uplifting to see more dark skinned characters voiced by actors/actresses of color. So thrilled this show continues to be a great success and looking forward to many seasons! Thanks, RT!

Because publicly shaming someone for seeking more characters of colors proves you "truly" care about the show, ToTheFarWest. Sorry inclusiveness and diversity is an outlandish idea for yourself and others.

    • KaptainKlepto The Best Around

This show was not built with diversity in mind, it was built with action and story. Just because it has a mainly female cast does not mean it is catering to the idea of abolishing gender stereotypes, it means Monty wanted a mainly female cast. As far as Characters of color; Amber, Fox Alistair, Yatsuhashi Daichi, Flynt Coal, Ceil Soleil, Arslan Altan, Roy Stallion, Nadir Shiko, just to name a few, 95% percent of them were introduced last season due to the Vytal Festival, and not to cater to people of color but to show what people are like in other parts of the world. This show is what the creators want it to be not what some whiny fans that cry oppression every time there is a "Whitewashed" cast want, you want a show about diversity go watch one that actually cares about that and leave RWBY alone.

    • EadlynJune

I have no problem with diversity I just feel that everything's fine diversity wise in RWBY right now. Anyways a good bit of Yang's animation caters to male audiences. Oh frick it female too, shes hot! I mean I'm a Nora girl but shes an awesome! Also just about every show passes the Bechdel Test, I mean its really old and outdated.

    • feminerd

A fan can be critical of the media they love. Unless you are a writer or voice actor on the show, what authority do you hold to say who this show is or is not written for? I made a commendation and a recommendation for more unique and often marginalized voices. I don't need fellow audience members trying to serve as gatekeepers for who can and can't watch the show. There's no need for such negativity when it already exists in everything else in the world. Also, it seems media literacy is a lost concept for some folks.

      Media Literacy 101

      Media are constructions

-Created by individuals to convey a message

-Contains their personal, biases, opinions, and assumptions

      Audiences negotiate meaning

-Different audiences can take away different meanings from the same media

-Factors such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, and social status change the interpretation

      Media is social and political

-It conveys values, power, and authority

-It can be non-inclusive and affect social norms regarding acceptance

      -It can create political change

    • Jhawk163

Fun fact, the gender ratio was a mistake, I can't remember where but one of the writers (I think it may have been Monty himself) said that they didn't intend for the gender ratio to be the way it is and that they have been having to add more male characters to make up for it.

    • feminerd

Since when is adding people of color to the narrative perverted? Mounty Oum was a person of color and Ren continues to be voiced by a person of color. The point of black feminism is to be inclusive and no one replying has proved to show a shred of inclusiveness or kindness. Instead there's been a clear message of who gets to voice praise and who doesn't. Who gets to be a fan and who doesn't deserve to be here. This ignorance and hatred makes it terribly hard for marginalized voices to show their love for a show. Thank you for your continued gatekeeping. It's a truly a warm welcoming community for all...

    • feminerd

ClausCalvo you spelled feminist, character, and where wrong. Diversity isn't a feeling. Changing the story can include increasing inclusivity. If asking for a person of color to voice a character is forcing diversity, then you've just made it clear you aren't welcome to everyone. Also, history shows if we never ask/demand a space for voices of color then it won't be created  Also, please continue to go low with your derogatory, vulgar, and misspelled remarks it's fitting for your "feelings" and comprehension. "When they go low, we go high" - Michelle Obama

    • feminerd

Furthermore, we can ask for a Grimm shark or a birdlike faunus without receiving the backlash of "identity politics" or claims of perverting the story. And yet having another black female character representing a more positive message voiced by a woman of color is "farfetched" and asking for "too much". If it sounds like bigotry and looks like bigotry, then you might be a bigot. If including one black voice actor upsets your notion of what the show is, then you might have a racist agenda in your gatekeeping. Weiss overcame her intolerance of fauna, don't you think it's about time you overcome your intolerance of people of color. Clearly, there is already a structure of power utilizing identity in the show mirroring that of our own society. Fun fact: Everyone has an identity, but while some are normalized others are politicized. You've chosen to make yours political by commenting against diversity, therefore inserting your own "identity politics".

I care about voice actors because the team of women who voicing the characters in RWBY are the best!! Personally, my favorite is Barbara Dunkleman (because I like to start every year off with a "yang"). I love seeing them at Comic-Cons. I love seeing their joy in behind the scenes clips. I love hearing the passion that goes into their voice acting in every episode. I'm sad to see them go when a character dies off. You might not care, but I certainly do.

ClausCalvo Privilege is when you think something is not a problem because it's not a problem to you personally.

Colorblindness isn't the answer, Multiculturalism is. Clearly with the success of this show means the creation and addition of new characters. We can't speak for the majority of people, we can only speak for ourselves. Personally, you may not see the need for increased diversity because maybe you see yourself and your culture reflected in these characters already (I don't know your reasoning). A call for more uplifting characters of color shouldn't be a threat. However, the fact that is has been taken as such means people who continue to comment with such backlash are invested in privilege. For someone who loves a show to simply ask writers to include another character of color and receive such hatred isn't unfamiliar. Why are be so angry about adding another character of color? Why be so defensive about hiring a black voice actor? Why is your hatred invested in gatekeeping for whiteness?

After sitting in on a Fan Expo session with Colleen Clinkenbeard, Cherami Leigh, Cassandra Lee Morris, and Trina Nishimura I can say the message was clear that these women were grateful for such experiences to voice these characters. Even if the roles they auditioned for didn't go to them they were genuinely excited to see them go to other women. That they weren't forcing a gendered agenda down people's throats just because they were answering a call to play female roles. However, some folks may think that. They also acknowledged the deep disturbing sexism that goes into objectifying and sexualizing little girls. That isn't forcing a feminist agenda down someones throat either, however there exists some people who think that. It was a discussion that didn't include the audience hurling insults or accusing them of having an pro-female agenda.

Also, not degrading someone or choosing to use a language of hatred and violence doesn't make me PC. I just choose to use more direct ways at getting to my point without attempting to strip someone of their humanity. It's also ironic to be called politically correct while supposedly rooted in an agenda of appallingly backwards identity politics.

I don't think we will see eye to eye on this and frankly I don't care. Keep enjoying what you enjoy about the show and hope to see (whatever that might be) and I will do the same (new types of Grimm, characters continue to further their stories, relationships grow closer, more maidens of the seasons, more characters of colors, more Zwei time, etc.). Thanks for taking the time to calm down in your last comments and type with a level head, I appreciate it. I put in my public request to RoosterTeeth (unfortunately there isn't a private avenue to avoid certain violent backlash) and wasn't asking for anyone's seal of approval. Can I finally get back to enjoying upcoming episodes? Have the final comment, but go in peace.

I know this comment thread is old, but I just wanted to say I 100% agree with you feminerd, and I liked the way you approached with your original message. You obviously express that you love the show, and it's fine to have criticisms! Your message is so kind, I don't understand why people are being so mean about it. Diversity is so important that it should be an integral part of every show, and I hope to see RT/RWBY accomplish that too. They definitely kill it on the strong women characters part, so I believe they could do well in diversity too!

At the 1:40ish mark... as Ruby is slicing up the Beowolfs, there's a faint voice that definitely is NOT Ruby, that sounds like it says "That's for--" I can't make out whether it says Penny or Phyrra but I think it's Penny.

Yeah... I'm not really impressed. My first thought was, "WTF? What's up with Stoic!Ruby? It's not like her to be so deep in the zone while fighting." Then I thought, "Oh yeah, RoosterTeeth time-skipped over a bunch of character development. No wonder she is acting so different." For what it's worth, I like what they've done with Ruby's character. A LOT. I mean, the Little Red Riding Hood motif is ridiculously awesome, and I'm impressed that the makers of RWBY used the connection between super-speed and teleportation. That at least tells me they're getting smarter with their creativity.

Be that as it may, they still have A LOT of ground to cover in terms of plot context and character development. In fact, I think I'll assign a grade to how each season handled each, just for fun (but also to make a point and summarize my minimal complaints about RWBY as a series so far):

Season One Characters (D+): Season One earned two As with Blake and Jaune's characters, and three Ds with Ruby, Weiss and Pyrrha  (episodes 9 & 10 - "The Badge and the Burden", kept the first two above an F, and Pyrrha's development with Jaune did the same for her). But every other character is a complete blank. Considering that this is the first season where character establishment is most important, this particular failure deserves no mercy. If each character wasn't written so consistently well (which put the season above an F+ or a D-), this would have been my reaction to Season One of RWBY.

Season One Plot Development (C): Okay, for what it's worth, RWBY's first season didn't do badly in this area at all. Not only did the World of Remnant shorts do a decent job of giving some broader context to important plot points, but the story does a really good job at handling allusions and lore construction. What really killed this point was the huge lack of present context, especially with regards to the conflict. "Oh, these girls are all Huntresses-in-training? Great. What are their stories? How did they come that far? What are their families like? What are their ambitions and plans for the future? We don't know? Eh, that's fine. I mean lots of other things are great about this show... oh! They're introducing the villains. Aw sweet, this is probably gonna be so cool... wait. Whaaat...?" Yeah... Let's just say that if I were grading RWBY by the quality of its villains, it would earn a big fat F in that category.

Season 2 Characters (B): Okay, I'll admit it. Season Two did a way better job at handling its characters. Most of the main cast is challenged in ways that gradually force them to start growing as characters, lots of former blanks (most notably Weiss, Pyrrha and even Yang) are filled in as we learn more about them. And we even get introduced to an engaging character that IMMEDIATELY gets some fundamental development: Penny! If Season One introduced all of its characters as well as Season Two introduced Penny, it would have earned an A+ in that category. But the one thing holding Season Two back from an A in characters is the volume of undeveloped characters, new and old: Mercury, Emerald, Roman, Cinder, Neptune, Ren, Nora, that one Faunice kid who befriends Blake... the list goes on and on and on. Introducing four new characters without developing any of its other undeveloped characters was this season's only mistake character-wise, but that's still a pretty big mistake.

Season 2 Plot Development (A): Yep, you read that right. Season Two of RWBY earned an A in plot development. Why? Because it did a good enough job explaining things in Season One to get away with wading into the details like it did in Season Two. Between the development we see in the characters, the plot, and even the conflict (which Season One SUCKED at), plus the next two World of Remnant shorts, this Season earned a solid A in plot development.

Season 3 Characters (A+): This season was my favorite so far, and with good reason. THE CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT WAS AMAZING!!! First and perhaps most importantly, we FINALLY get to see Ruby gain more dimensions as a character, instead of just being a 1D/2D Ascended Fangirl. That alone could have held Season 3 at a solid C no matter how bad everything else was. But it only gets better. Blake's connection to the White Fang gains a lot more depth, Winter helps her little sister flesh out the ESTJ stereotype (you know, the "grouchy bossy-boots" cliche we see in so many characters), Yang gets a much needed dose of humility (I flat-out hated Yang by the end of Season One, but Season Three went a long way towards making up for that), the Jaune x Pyrrha pairing is almost simultaneously confirmed and wrapped up (that romance arc was worth a whole letter grade), Ren finally becomes something more that a boring stoic (his hidden depths of weirdness weren't much, but it's worth mentioning), Jaune and Pyrrha are both fleshed out as budding leaders and heroes at heart, General Atlas is shown to be holding up the weight of the world like his mythological namesake (there's no way in Hell that's a coincidence), Adam Taurus makes his debut as the first villain with an actual backstory (HALLELUJAH), and the Vytal Festival Tournament shows the rest of the series the right way to introduce a lot of new characters: with plot relevant context and lots of outward personality! This category is one of the only categories that lives up to the hype it gets. Why can't the rest of RWBY be this awesome?!

Season 3 Plot Development (B-): This one was not only the last, but the hardest. I mean, there are so many great things about this season's plot development: the tension, the drama, the fun-filled awesomeness of the Vytal Festival Tournament, the interesting World of Remnant shorts, the fact that Cinder's plan FINALLY starts to make sense (and is dramatically revealed as something AWESOME), the well-executed deaths of Penny and Pyrrha... I could go on for hours listing off every little thing this season's plot does right. But, there was one BIG thing about this season's plot that dragged it way down from the A+ it deserved: the ending. Season Three of RWBY has a HORRIBLE ending. Where do I even begin...

Well, I guess the ending didn't start to suck until Pyrrha's death. I mean, it was still beautiful, but seeing how badly Pyrrha lost to Cinder despite Pyrrha's huge advantage in skill and remaining stamina cost that moment lots of points. However, it was made even worse by the huge inconsistency that was applied to the Fall Maiden's magic. I mean, the first Fall Maiden fell from one arrow to the back, while Cinder managed to survive getting crushed beneath several tons of metal without a scratch. I might have let this slide if it had been done more carefully, but Cinder went too far. Not only did she have no real experience in wielding the Fall Maiden's full arsenal of magic, but she just got back from incapacitating Ozpin (since he's implied to be alive and beating people is WAY harder to do without killing them, that earned some major BS points), and she managed to sustain no visible damage. "Oh, but that just goes to show you how much of a threat she is, blah blah blah your argument is invalid" some butt-hurt RWBY fanboy might say. But honestly, that's the whole reason why this moment sucked. I mean, the Fall Maiden's magic is essentially shown to be a full-blown Game Breaker. That, paired with Cinder's sad lack of character development, technically qualifies her as a Mary Sue. Then things got REALLY cruddy with the reveal of Ruby's Eleventh Hour Superpower. Even with the explanation that follows, that was a hugely obvious asspull, especially when we learn what Ruby's attack did to Beacon. When Cinder and Ruby's powers get more context and explanation, I'll be happy. But until then, those things are both pure suck in terms of their effect on the story (they do a lot for the plot, but for no reason and with no development or build-up). Finally and arguably worst of all, is the time-skip. The very end of Season Three leaves us with no clue about where the story is going and what will happen to its characters. Skipping over all of the context establishment that should've gotten screen-time was almost as bad as how Season One developed its characters. The one consolation the ending had to offer was finally seeing Yang drop her arrogance, which (hypothetically) could have single-handedly kept my faith in this series alive, even if Season Three had flopped (which it didn't). Be that as it may, if the whole of Season Three's plot had sucked as badly as its ending, it would have gotten an F-.

So, overall, RWBY's first three seasons have earned an average grade of 82.5%... in its flaws. Even if lots of things have sucked in these area, EVERYTHING else about RWBY has remained absolutely phenomenal. I firmly believe that if RWBY can get its act together in these areas, it will finally earn the hype it has been receiving. When that day comes, I'll be able to confidently list RWBY as one of my all-time favorite animes (right up there with Naruto, Fairy Tail and Sword Art Online). But until then, I wait with bated breath to see how this story continues to improve.

I've complained a lot about the ways in which this series sucks in the comments for Season Three's last episode, but now I realize that I wasn't fairly assessing the series as a whole. RWBY is far and away the best amateur web-show the internet has to offer; no contest. If it keeps improving the way it has been, this franchise will grow into something legendary.

I admit at the start of your post I was like "Oh no they don't like RWBY its gonna be down voted and they might be complaining about things I like oh no" but I TOTALLY understand where this is coming from and can appreciate the time you took to explain your opinions. I admit I don't exactly agree with grading the first season as a D and almost an F in characters (purely because it was just introducing characters and such though so I would totally understand a C- to go with that plot grade and they weren't making episodes nearly as long as they are now) but I again totally see where youre coming from! (I up voted!)

@HisuiCotton Thank you for proving that you're above bigotry. :) And I judged Season One more harshly simply because both of the things I graded it on are SUPER important for the beginning of a story. Those kinds of shortcomings are a lot worse of they are made at the start of a narrative. The more mistakes are made in giving exposition, the more confusion it leaves the audience with. And it's never a good thing for an audience to start out confused about a story's plot. Case in point: Season 1, Episode 1 left me with a lot of unanswered questions about everything other than the lore. Once again: context is key. I found it pretty much impossible to care about any of the Season One characters other than Jaune (because his development is solid), Blake (for the same reason as Jaune) and Pyrrha (because she reminds me of Erza from Fairy Tail). That's why the Season One characters got a D+. Two solidly developed characters and a myriad of consistently-written, underdeveloped ones earns a solid D+ for a story's exposition. If Seasons Two or Three had done that well with their characters, they would have earned a C+ or a B- as long as they went off of a solid exposition. But sadly, screwing up exposition at the beginning of a story is hard to overlook.

But for what it's worth, thank you for the upvote.

@Steeevo34 Let me guess: you're one of those "too long; didn't read" troglodytes I was expecting. Anyone who "won't have" a carefully thought out, supportive criticism of their fandom (with an overall positive conclusion) is one of the people that this meme is referring to. Until you read my constructive criticism and evaluate its logic fairly, you have the right to remain ignored (and illogical).

@Bismuth73 Oh no, don't get me wrong, I read the whole thing, and there are points I agree on. Your argument is just as valid as any others. But you're aiming it at the wrong crowd, at the wrong time, and that was my point.

      Starting from the top.

      1. It's not like her to be deep in the zone while fighting? The last time we saw her, her entire team ran away, was taken away, or gave up. All of Vale fell apart, and as a result the rest of Remnant began to fall. Ruby, and what was left of JNPR, decided to make a difference by going out and fighting. That's all they are doing.

      2. They skipped time because nothing important happened. Again, they've been fighting Grimm since we last saw them. Nothing important happened to show. Why do you think real TV shows skip months or years in the middle of their plot? It's because nothing relevant had taken place.

      3. The "little red riding hood" has been present since the very first trailer; walking through the woods in a red hood and fighting wolves. That's not including that Torchwick always referred to her as "Little Red".

      4. I don't know what "connection" you are referring to, she has never teleported. However, they did show her use of super speed as instantaneous; and I do like how they are actually showing her movement in more detail now.

      5. "Smarter with their creativity" is the most oxymoronic thing I've heard in a long time. Being logical and being creative are two entirely separate things, that's why logic and creativity reside in the two separate hemispheres in the brain. You can not get smarter with creativity, only more creative.

      6. I didn't read the rest of it, because everything you've said up to this point shows me you have paid little-to-no attention to the actual series in general. Your judgements have nothing to stand on. You also have no idea how a story is progressed through time. I'm surprised you didn't complain that the first volume is only roughly 127 minutes, including opening sequences and credits per episode, and showing a larger time span than 2 hours. We go through weeks without watching anyone sleep, study, or take tests. How absurd!

Conclusion: Shut up with your subjective comments; and if you are grading this show so poorly to begin with, why continue to torture yourself watching it?

@Gunmaster260 Okay, you want to try and out-logic me? Let's go.

1.) This may have been what Ruby had been doing for months now, but that doesn't solve the problem I was getting at: character dissonance. Nobody ever got to see Ruby grow into that strong-willed heroine this video showed us. Speaking of which...

2.) Wow. I'm beginning to think that RWBY fans really don't care about character development. Because THAT is what the time-skip glossed over. If we got one or two episodes fast-forwarding through the highlights of how all the characters grew, that would be one thing. But clearly, that isn't gonna happen. If you're trying to tell a story with relate-able  characters, time-skipping over character development is a BAD thing! How many times do I have to say that? Sheesh...

      #exasperation

3.) I said "motif", not "running theme". I was mostly referring to her appearance. Before, the imagery was a lot more subtle (hence why Ruby wore black most of the time). But now, they made the parallel direct by adding in an actual red hood. That is what struck me as awesome. It's a brilliant way of underlining the change in tone.

4.) By connection, I was referring to the writers figuring this out: "Oh, Ruby is super fast! Why don't we show the audience how much she has improved by making her go so fast, it looks like she's teleporting!" Not making any direct accusations, but it's starting to seem like you're looking for something to complain about (I emphasized 'seem' to make sure you know that I am not saying anything explicitly).

5.) Wow. That, my friend was an excellent example on how to be the kiss of death. And by the way, I STRONGLY resent what you just said. Because it implies that no one can use both sides of their brain for the same task.

Let me explain it this way: how intelligently someone uses their creativity determines how well they use it. The stupid kind of creativity thrives in PWP FanFiction (short for "Plot? What Plot?") and fanart that looks like it was drawn by a three-year-old.

Smart creativity is what RWBY has. And I've started to see the series flaunt that a lot more (in a good way).

Unless you see no difference in those two things...

6.) And that is a good example on how to be close-minded. You clearly have taken an approach that makes no effort to understand the reasoning I'm using. If you don't take the time to understand what I'm saying (like HisuiCotton did), then you're proving my point about people who don't think through their fandoms.

Conclusion: If you think any of my criticism was destructive or illogical, then you've done a crappy job of explaining why. Because you said almost nothing objective (I misspoke) in your reply.

Something tells me this is why so many fandoms have become fandumbs: people worship them instead of thinking about them.

@Bismuth73 You're right, I didn't say anything subjective. Everything I stated was true and has examples and legs to stand on. You're entire rant was an opinion shared by few from this community. I'm sorry that factual information ruined your subjective reasoning.

    • Bismuth73 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Gunmaster260 Beg pardon, I'm afraid I misspoke. I meant that there was nothing OBjective about what you said. And let me explain why.

1.) I was referring to the fact that Ruby was typically never as focused and confident in battle as she was in this video. Granted, she didn't suck at fighting (quite the opposite), but there was always some sign that she let loose and didn't really put her emotions away. Season One gives a good example of this: during their entry exam, Ruby charged almost all of her opponents with pretty much no plan; just a battle cry. They even made a plot point out of it that put Ruby at odds with Weiss (the one where Ruby interferes with Weiss' attack, causing her to accidentally start a fire), if you were paying enough attention to see it.

Your reply... seems way off point. Even after the cataclysm at the end of Season Three, how could Ruby have developed that facet to her personality in a few months? Would those traits be emerging in that amount of time? Hell yes. But would they have developed as much as we saw in this video? I'm gonna say "Probably not." It would take a little more explaining for that to make sense.

2.) Well. Your lack of feedback here tells me that YOU don't care about character development. Because anyone who thinks seeing a character's personality grow and change is "nothing important" needs a brain check. Seriously, the only stories that I know of that don't give relevant focus to character development are Michael Bay movies; and they suck!

3.) Really? If you're disagreeing here, not only are you being frivolous, but you're blurring the lines between themes (subtle references to Little Red Riding Hood for Ruby) and imagery (the fact that Ruby now has an actual red hood). Those are two different words with two different definitions, bro. C'mon.

4.) Again, this is frivolous to disagree about. And for that matter, what's bad about what I said? No really, I don't get why you brought this up. :/

5.) I have a scientific article that proves that intelligence and creativity actually have a lot to do with each other right here. If you're too lazy to read it, here's one of the points it gets at: "How can you have problem solving skills without creativity?" It's not like we can all solve our problems by using some list of terms and equations we memorized. We have to be creative enough to come up with the solutions ourselves.

6.) Once again, this just proves my point. If you can't be bothered to read and understand what I'm saying, you have no right to say that I'm wrong. Because you don't even know what it is that you're calling wrong!

Let me put it this way: winning an argument with sweeping generalizations is like beating someone at a board game by flipping the board. Sure, it's game over and you can loudly shout, "I WIN" until people give up arguing and "prove" that you're right. But that wouldn't actually prove anything. It would just be you being obnoxious. Until you stop being "more-logical-than-thou" and actually address what I'm saying, than you won't be much better.

If you want to keep going I've got six words for you: "I can do this all day."

@Bismuth73 Listen man, I don't doubt for a second that you can argue the same points, repeatedly, all day about an anime you clearly dislike watching. Aside from all of the fallacies you're using in your argument, I'm just not going to continue this because you are clearly the hard-headed one.

Before I depart this flame-war, I would like to inform you that this is only a "Character Short". I'm sure that the RWBY team is going to go more in depth with Ruby, and all the other characters, and the events that transpired leading up to this point. If they don't, it obviously isn't relevant enough to waste the audience's time. That's that, and that's their call to make.

For what it's worth, this time-skip will actually be a really good thing if you turn out to be right, and the necessary character development is smoothed over with an episode-long montage that explains everything. THAT would be a stroke of the genius on the part of RWBY's writers. Fairy Tail did that pretty effectively after it included a one-year time-skip.

I agree with a lot of these things, especially ruby randomly going super sayin with the only foreshadowing being Ozpin in season one saying "silver eyes". For a show that has a decent amount of foreshadowing on a lot of things it really skipped out there. Or heck maybe even the same explanation Qrow gave after the event, but instead having released that information earlier on as a world of remnant video or something. Atleast that way her sudden "Eleventh Hour Superpower" wouldn't have come so out of the blue and seem so forced.

Although there is one thing about your post that left me a little confused, and thats rating Naruto, FT, and SAO as your all time favorites when those have many of the same blunders you criticized here, as well as add impenetrable plot armor for most of the characters in those series. (Although I personally love fairy tail, and sao specifically Alicization arc).

an example of the foreshadowing is that if you go back and watch the first rwby trailers, the image of them shown at the end is exactly how they look now. While this instance may not foreshadow plot elements I still thought it was really neat. ^.^

@Qwexi Thank you for being a logical RWBY fan.

As for what I said about Naruto, FT, and SAO, those are all animes that have successfully justified all those faults as their story progressed (which is a large part of what makes them so amazing). As of Season Four Episode One, RWBY is well on its way to accomplishing the same thing, and thus achieving that same form of true greatness in story-telling.

Granted, SAO didn't do as good of a job as the others, but that's only because it tells a pretty long story in a very short length of screentime. Sword Art Online really deserves an expanded universe, because it has a great story to tell. #Tangent

As for Naruto, FT and SAO having plot armored protagonists, I'll bet you anything the same thing is gonna happen to RWBY. Still, as long as the show keeps things (mostly) justified, that's okay. After all, in the words of Johnny Depp, "every story needs a hero". You can't really kill of the protagonist of a story without making the tone sad or switching to another main character. And in the cases of Naruto and Sword Art Online, that isn't exactly a feasible option for the story's plot.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to appreciate what I have to say. You've earned yourself an upvote.

    • Dreadnaught64

I agree with your point about plot armor, but there is a difference between Naruto and SAO.

When I watched Naruto, I was actually worried that characters would die. Naruto was a lovable yet flawed character who could barely beat his opponents in the original series. Because he was nowhere near perfect, with his only trick beIng shadow clones and later the rasengan, I actually thought that he might die, at least in the original series. Of course, he is the title character, so I always had a feelingin the back of my head that there was no way he could be killed off, but the suspenseful and dramatic vibes that the fights gave off managed to drive that feeling away.

SAO is a different story. Kirito grinded and grinded until he effectively became the God from the Game. He's the definition of a Mary Sue; he has several obsessed fangirls, more power than anyone else in SAO, and PhD level coding skills. The writers couldn't even kill him off if they tried, which is disappointing, since he's such a flat, bland character to begin with. In the Alfheim arc, it was even worse. He was in a normal, non-deadly MMO trying to save the damsel in distress. There was no possible way for him to die in any way possible. Forgive me if I'm not using this term right, but he's a mary sue deus ex machina character.

Point is, I think Naruto does have plot armor to it, but SAO is on a whole other level.

    • Bismuth73 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Dreadnaught64 Alright bro, let's talk about Kirito for a moment.

I honestly think people are blowing his "harem" WAY out of proportion. Almost all the girls that become his "fangirls" are the ones who he saved. They look up to him because he's a symbol of strength and safety in a world full of weakness and death.

His stats are quite ridiculous, but that's no different from Naruto or any other anime protagonist. It's kind of a staple for an anime's main character to be a badass. Saying that Kirito is basically the SAO God is absurd. After all, both Kuradeel and the Gleam Eyes came pretty damn close to killing him. And strictly speaking, Kayaba DID kill him. And considering that all the games that come after (Alfheim Online and Gun Gale Online, among others) are small potatoes compared to SAO, it perfectly explains why he kicks as much butt as he does in those other games.

The one thing I can admit is screwed up about Kirito is his programming abilities. The way he saved Yui was done very poorly to say the least, and if I owned the franchise I would have gone back and fixed that before releasing it.

If you want any more logic on the merits of SAO, then read this.

Beyond that, I agree with what you said 100%. Thank you for giving such a polite, logical argument. ^.^

    • Dreadnaught64

@Bismuth73 And thank you for debating with me without being rude, though I still disagree with you about Naruto. yang Unlike Kirito, he does have flaws and weaknesses. Chiefly among them is stupidity, but he also doesn't know genjutsu and, at the beginning of the series, could only use shadow clone jutsu. Granted, he did get sage mode, rasenshuriken, and nine-tails chakra mode, but he had to work and train to get those, unlike Kirito. He is far from the strongest character in the show, but the fact that he trains hard sends an inspiring message. He definitely has more depth than Kirito, who, just by being a beta tester, dominated the game without much work needed.

@Dreadnaught64 Okay, I agree with you 100% on that much. Naruto is a much better character than Kirito overall. However, I would also add another thing that has just as much to do with that fact as weaknesses: story development. Sword Art Online is extremely short compared to Naruto in terms of length and the amount of time covered by the plot. So, all of the elements of SAO's story that rely on plot development (like the main character's strength) seem weaker. So critical people are more likely to hate SAO for that. Krito seems like a weaker protagonist than Naruto because we don't get to see Kirito develop into the badass he is, unlike the heavy emphasis Naruto (the anime) gives to character development. BUT, development aside, Naruto still becomes a ridiculously OP protagonist (later in the anime, obviously). He and Kirito both come away from their adventures as extremely powerful characters (in the context of their respective universes). THAT is what I meant what I brought up Naruto the last time.

My point is that none of this makes SAO inherently bad. It does, however, mean that it has a lot of untapped potential, and deserves a greater expansion of its plot ("Sword Art Online UNabridged" if you will).

I'm glad we can have an intelligent discussion like this. As an aspiring writer (I have a FanFiction account under the name Jarvis R. Yeriel), things like this tickle my fancy even more.

It seems that the animation quality has improved in this season. plus I like how everyone is aging. Ruby watched her team break apart, her sister loose her arm, and a good friend die, that will force you to grow up, and I think that's what we saw with this ruby.

it has always had 4 forms if you consider the scythe with the straighted blade a different form. There was the full out sniper rifle, the scythe and the compact rifle and of course like i said at the begining the scythe with the straightened blade.

...Really? Years? Did we watch the same trailer? They just changed outfits mostly. Plus its been six months and Ruby was only fifteen at the end of volume 4. If you've ever been around teenagers, you'd know that they can change DRASTICALLY over a short time period. Ruby's changes are minor, all things considered. Also, @Bismuth, please go somewhere else. Your criticisms, while your own and certainly well thought out, do not belong in a comment section. Go to reddit or something, not here.

Do you know what they call a video that has no story or character development?

      A Montage.

    • Bismuth73 FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

@Gunmaster260 Once again your logic has failed you, good sir. A montage is defined as "the process or technique of selecting, editing, and piecing together separate sections of film to form a continuous whole". In other words, it's a way to fast-forward through a long period of time and still cover the important stuff. Honestly, I think this time-skip would be perfectly okay if it was smoothed over by a montage. Then we could see all the important character development without wasting time slogging through several months' worth of filler.

    • Overlordgab

@Gunmaster260 I already love RWBY, the story and many of the characters, so I'm actually looking foward to see how they grow in the middle of the upcoming challenges they'll have to face, and how they changed after Beacon's fall

Growth spurt, plus she's carrying herself in a more mature fashion.

She was fifteen at the end of Volume 3, and its been six months. I had a friend in high school, didn't seem her over the summer. When she came back next semester, she looked like a whole different person. Teenagers grow fast. Plus, as others said, Ruby has been fighting for a long while, so the stress and danger probably made her mature faster. This, @Bismuth, is why people are downvoting you. Because it makes you look like an idiot/tool.

    • Kalilaila FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold Chaos Light

@Bismuth73 there seem to have been a bunch of downvoting going on in comment threads for no reason at all.  Downvoting every comment regardless of what it says.  Don't generally see them in the forums though.  People aren't downvoting you because of what you think, most people actually agree with you from what I have seen in discussions.  The appearance change is generally chalked up to artistic reasons such as the new art style and a desire to show her as having changed since we last saw her.

@Rapidfirez I've seen plenty of teenage growth spurts in my time on this earth, and a growth spurt over the course of 3-6 months doesn't change someone this much, and if such a thing had actually happened in that time period she likely would be still adapting to the changes in height and balance.  It also doesn't explain the noticeable aging that seems to have happened with Jaune, Ren, and Nora; all of whom were already 17 and typically done with such significant growth spurts.

If Ruby was going to mature mentally and emotionally, she would have done it long before now; and honestly I don't think that she is any more mature in those aspects than the last time we saw her, if she had been, then she would have actually called for the others before charging in blindly.  She also has a noticeably different fighting style than we last saw and abilities that she didn't at all possess the last time we saw her.  Developing and mastering such abilities and skills to the level we see her display does not happen in such a short period of time without having someone to train with who is far more skilled than those in RNJR.
