Volume 5, Chapter 10: True Colors

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 10: True Colors

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

In Chap.9 Cinder & Raven plan to go to Haven the same night of the Whitefang attack on Haven. In this chapter Ghira says that the attack is in two weeks but before he says that Qrow gets the call from Leo to meet up the next night when the ambush is suppose to take place. So does this mean that Blake and Sun could actually show up to Haven in time??

    • Destroyah707

I'm surprised how no one talks about how Blake murdered that guy. Clearly intentional, she waited so long to pull out her dad and made it so it would fall on the guy.

    • Aegeta FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Murdered? Is a solider that kills in the field a murderer? How about someone that shots someone that is charging their girlfriend? If she did not pull her father out they would have both died (her father and the attacker). If she pulled him out to soon the attacker would have just changed direction to attack again. Not saying that killing him was the best answer but it likely saved her father's life.

    • Zinadu FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

Well killed then. I'm not saying she wasn't justified was just more pointing out the fact she chose to wait so he died. She could have pulled her dad out much earlier and then her and Sun likely could have taken the one guy still and subdued him if they had been so inclined.

I just hope she or one of team RWBY kills Adam and he doesn't just get arrested.

    • melik3k

I also hope Adam is killed by a member of team RWBY but not anyone. Yang, I think, should be the one that kills him as there is a rivalry between them now (because Yang's arm got cut by Adam) but I also hope Blake has a strong part in the 'killing Adam' process, if it ever takes place in the story.

    • PaleRider4

I thought that guy killed himself. Because think about it, he was going to stab her father in the back right and it wouldve dropped on them both. She just happened to pull her dad out the way in time.

I fully understand with Monty being gone no one has the exact same vision or procedure to replicate Monty's fight choreography perfectly. That being said I really did enjoy this episode. I would honestly say Wukong's fight with Illia was the best choreography so far in this season. It was short but it was very well done and almost made me think Monty came back from the dead.

  • somethingunusual

I've watched this episode three times now, I think it's becoming one of my favourite RWBY episodes EVER. Some of the best fight choreography we've seen since V3, you can really feel the impact of the blows yet it stays fast-paced. The culmination of two well built arcs (the overall Menagerie plot and Ilia's inner conflict/struggle) and for that matter cementing our first confirmed LGB character as good and so avoiding a bunch of unfortunate tropes! It's dramatic, it's emotional, it's exciting, and the soundtrack really nailed it too. Can't wait to watch this week's episode!

im a bit gutted that we haven't seen any of the architecture of the city of mistrial. Was really looking forward to comparing the difference to vale. All we got was a quick glimpse and a few shots of the academy. The rest has been in a house 90% of the time. The best we got was with qrow but even that was lacklustre. But, I am impressed with how the crew designed menagerie (I don't have a clue on to to spell that). We got a good read of how the people live, what they do and a bit about the culture and how the landscape differs from the rest of the kingdoms. I hate to complain but this was something was looking forward to seeing since volume 2.

Does anyone notice that the timeline in Menagerie is actually 2 weeks earlier than what is currently going on in Mistral/Haven Academy? They basically stated that they "have 2 weeks" until Adam sets his White Fang on Haven Academy, but if I remember right, it was only a few days away when Cinder & co. went to see Raven and Vernal????

It further confirms how everyone had different time periods in Volume 4. It’s a little confusing to the viewer, i can agree, but it also makes it more realistic and more tense for the final showdown. Everyone is working towards a different goal, including the villains. Therefore having everyone at different time periods makes it more tense for the audience

The fighting has dropped a lot since volume 3, dont miss understand me is decent but its not as good as it was before, but they are developing the story so I can guess that there is more talking in the fights rather than a full blown out fight like it was before.

Although I do agree there has been less fighting since volume 3, I think the fight scenes have gotten substantially better in every subsequent season.

In volumes 1 and 2, Monty’s style of close, frantic martial brawler action was evident, kinetic and super fun. While season 3 featured a LOT of fights, they weren’t anywhere close to Monty’s style (for obvious reasons) and focused more on people charging up big attacks and standing still while the other guy did their thing.

Over the subsequent seasons, they’ve grown more and more farmiliar with the new engine. Last season’s Qrow vs (Scorpion-Tail Guy) fight came SHOCKINGLY close to returning to Monty’s style, and here I think they really nailed it and did it justice. Sun vs. Illia was like something straight out of the black trailer.

I expect the number of fight scenes to rise up again at some point as they become more experienced and efficient at this style.

yeah but i miss those one 1 v 1 that we used to have before it has become more of a group fight every time and the problem with that is that you cant focus in 2 characters to do an awesome animation. tyrion vs Qrow was good cuz they focused more on those 2 character rather than making it a 4 v 1 or a 5 v 5

thought the shotgun appearance again was really good.

You should switch the scene at 11:31 where Blake gets up and runs to the left back to what it was originally with Blake still on the ground. I appreciate you guys trying to fix the inconsistency but having her get up and run to the side doesn't fix the inconsistency since Blake would still be visible in the Gun-chucks scene and it only draw attention to the problem. The Gun-chucks scene is such an awesome spectacle that not many are gonna notice Blake not being there but by having her run off the audience goes, "wait where's Blake going", making them subconsciously look for her in the background, causing them to jolt when Blake suddenly reappears telling Sun and Ilia to stop.

    tl;dr

It was better when you first released the episode, consider changing it back for the dvd/blu-ray release.

If Raven truly wants to sacrifice Qrow for the Relic that certainly emphasizes her brother's description of Raven to Yang back in Volume 3.

"It doesn't take a great number of people to cause harm." Tell me about it. How many millions have been killed for stupid reasons, or due to disputes between politicians of different countries?

There goes some theories about Ozpin's cane.

Leo Lionheart is portrayed as a coward in Volume 5 but, in my opinion, he did score points against Raven. She might think herself smart and pragmatic, but it's little more than self preservation that motivates them both.

    At least Leo expresses remorse.

Back in Volume 1, Blake said most Faunus could see just as well at night as they could during the day. So what difference would Illia's turning the lights off make? For that matter, what effect would Illia's changing colour have?

"I don't know what else to do!" There's a statement with real-world application: Too many people don't seem to know how to deal with their anger and hate.

Also, not to kill the mood but, when Illia was crying for some reason I thought of a song verse by Fred Rogers: "What do you do with the made that you feel; When you feel so mad you could bit? When the whole wide world, Seems oh, so wrong; And nothing you do seems very right?" Just a random thought.

Didn't expect the fights to end as they did, but Sun Wukong showing off his moves was sick. Haven't been that impressed by him since Volume 1.

Blake's speech at the end was powerful. "Humans didn't do this. We did this." This show might have pulled back on the crazy fight scenes, but the dialogue is getting better and better.

"You're just going to forgive her? After everything she did?" Officer about Illia

    "I am." Blake

There's no way to fix hate, but there are ways to answer it.

So i've rewatched this episode a few times, and i shall preface this comment with this: Thank you RT. This was the kind of stuff this volume really needed to kick start everything. The last few episodes have been a bit of a slog to get through.

And im very glad were done with Menagerie at last. Frankly i was tired of it. And overall i did enjoy this episode. Let me make that crystal clear.

Now that I've gotten the thank you's out of the way though, something has been bugging me. We've spent over a season and a half building to this, just to turn around and have the heros basically bulldoze over all that tension. Ghira was wounded, the house got burnt up, and..really nothing else. Meanwhile, the whole cell has been taken down and one of the Albains is dead. And apparently, mr bat faunus can't stop a charging person armed only with a tray and he saw her coming.

Seems like RT has perfected the art of wasting cool character designs on people that don't do shit.

Its just a tad frustrating, because come on I never really felt like the Belladonna's were losing this after Blake and Sun got there. So when that aspect of a fight fails, that sense that the heros could lose, the whole thing kinda sours for me.

I have a bet. I bet Ozpin's cane is a key to unlock the relic, or if anything something related to it and I also believe that Ruby will be like "I should've known" or "I knew it". Who else believes this? Anyone? Also, I just realized that the 4 headmaster represent characters from the wizard of oz. Ozpin is Oz, Leo is the Lion (and equally as cowardly), and Ironwood is the Tinman. Lore is fun.

    • conto

Also note that Glinda (the professor with the power to repair broken environments after battles) shares the name with Glinda, the good witch of the south, another character from the wizard of Oz story.
Also, the name Ozpin is the combination of names; the first one obviously being Oz, but the second one being Odin. And much like the original Odin, Ozpin has two ravens to go around the world for him, serving as his eyes gathering info: Qrow and Braiwen (well, at least she used to).

Dare I say “spellcheck and grammar check”. Yes everything you said is accurate but the spelling is off on Glynda and it isn’t Braiwen, it’s Raven.

    • conto

Yeah I made some spelling mistakes there, sorry about that. Although, it's not like spellchecks and grammar checks would help much with fantasy names.
Also, now that I checked I see that full name is  Raven Branwen. It was her last name that I massacered.

    • noonyakaleka

Actually the whole name of Ozpin comes from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The "great and powerful wizard of oz" is actually a traveling circus magician/conman from Nebraska whose whole name is Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmannuel Ambroise Diggs. He shortens his name based on his initials to O.Z.P.I.N.H.E.A.D. but prefers to use just "Oz" in the books. CRWBY is obviously using Ozpin. The Odin reference is just a character motif, but is not part of his name.

Also notice that Ozpin's latest incarnation is Oscar - keeping in alignment with the wizard of oz reference.
