RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 7: Rest and Resolutions

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

I don't understand how turning into a bird is anything bad, especially considering how most people would consider the many benefits it would offer (Flight, espionage, etc.). Maybe the writers will explain in the next episode why it's such a big deal?

Man, you can really tell what Jaune is feeling in his words. :( Props to Miles for making me sad!

All in all, this episode was okay. It's nice seeing almost everyone back together, though some lines felt unnecessary like Ruby saying how Ren "gets real deep when he feels like talking." Even if it feels in character for her, all it comes off as is telling the audience Ren's character like we've somehow forgotten it.

I also found it weird that Raven and Qrow's shapeshifting is treated so horribly. I see absolutely  nothing bad about it and I think most of us would love being able to crap wherever you want.

    Genuine question:

Why does Yang act like the whole "I
gave them the ability to turn into birds" thing is this curse and major
breach of trust and goodness? Frankly, that's just bad ass.... I wanna
turn into a bird at will..

    • Fudgemint

I don't understand it either. It'd be one thing if Yang was just annoyed considering Ozpin chuckled about it and she's clearly not in a laughing mood, but the shapeshifting itself is being treated like some horrible awful thing for seemingly no reason. It doesn't bind them to Oz or anything. It's basically just an extra Semblance.

This episode felt a little self congratulatory in a bad fan-fiction kind of way a couple of times but I do appreciate the attempt at a "down time" episode. These kind of episodes are really important for developing characters outside of conflict and I'm a sucker for good character development Overall I felt that the execution was lacking but I am sincerely excited for more episodes like this to come in the future. I am confident that y'all can and will improve.

    • Japanlette

Celebrate, but not with porn that makes you cringe. I need to do a rant on this.

First off, there are children and teens that watch RWBY. Even if they stopped watching because of the post about viewer discresion, there are children and teens who watch it. They most likely go into the comments to see everyone's thoughts and writes his/her opinion about it. If they see porn at a young age, it will either scar them for life, or make them watch more porn, which is not allowed.

Second of all, this isn't allowed in real life.

Lastly, This redirected me to a vid by Eruptionfang and said, "Top 7 Ships in RWBY"

      this is a worthless rant

    • Mad_Dog7

Ok Yang I can understand, but Ruby and Wiess do NOT have tit that big and bouncy (though I'm not complaining!)

    • Thaineland

@Japanlette This is not porn. In most inhabited parts of the world you see this much skin at a beach or swimming pool. Even if it were porn, seeing the human body is not going to scar anybody in any way that their society/upbringing hasn't scarred them already. People didn't evolve with shirts and pants already on at birth.

All that being said, this video still lacks anything even resembling any from of class. The poster should understand that the creators of this show have always made it a point to portray their characters as thinking feeling human beings, and not as sex objects ... with that in mind, while the existence of this kind of material is inevitable, posting it here is rather disrespectful.

  • Kerisato

Let me just start by saying Good Episode. Nice and light-hearted.

    (Rant)

Unlike some of the complainers (mostly present on the youtube end of things) I have no problems with the length of RWBY episodes. Probably because I've been watching this series since it began; when Monty first pitched this show, episodes were as short as 5 minutes, with substantially less content and plot advancement. What transpired in this 12(ish) minute episode would have taken at least two weeks under that old schedule. So tall the so-called fans of Monty's work: Pipe down. Let me repeat that: Fans of Monty's work, complaining about the length: Learn some RWBY history. And those who whine about how nothing is happening, or the pace is sluggish, should go rewatch Volume 1 & 2, where Monty was very much alive and actively writing.

It really is the height of arrogance to assume that because you like this show, the creators owe you each week. Newsflash: The world revolve around you. RWBY would exist whether or not you found it, and it'll exist long after the more fickle of you ingrates up-and-leave. You aren't the writers, the creators, or even the animators, so be thankful you have something to watch which, by the way, the majority of you are NOT paying for. Because you know what could have happened? Monty Oum died before Volume 3 had been finished (production). RT could have pulled the plug out of respect for him since this show was his dream. They didn't. No doubt there was (and I'm sure will be) differences in  creativity, story-telling, character introduction and design choices, compared with what Monty Oum had envisioned, but RT, as far as I can tell, is treating his work with respect and delivering a sweet American-based Anime that epitomizes everything cool about this genre of entertainment - With the added bonus of an interesting more-Western story.

Contrary to those over-inflated opinions held by and for yourselves (and disregarding the telepathy, or Ouji board usage you whiners must be reliant upon to claim with such confidence/authority that Monty wouldn't have done such-and-such) the staff knew Monty better than you ever will. Would you rather have them just end the show? (I know some would, but then they'd go on to cry about how it ended before a conclusion was reach in the plot) I for one am glad they did not. If it bothers you then stop watching. And if you can't bring yourself to do that then be bitter, disagree (civilly), but don't flood RoosterTeeth's channel/site with your toxicity, vanity, ignorance and immaturity.

I'm not saying criticism isn't welcome. We all want to see certain things happen (I'd welcome another showing of Team FNKI, or CFVY). But there's a difference between fan feedback, criticism and self-centered cynicism.

    (End Rant)

Has it not occured to Ruby that more named female characters wear skirts and dresses than don't in this show?

That's one fan theory true: Ozpin created the Maidens. Wonder if the Maidens were an attempt by Ozpin to create a game changer. Perhaps he was tired of the war with Salem and thought to win it by introducing power houses capable of more than any ordinary huntsman or hero. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that Summer Rose' death also stemmed from the belief in strength: He probably thought, if the Maidens couldn't finish it, even after all this time, maybe a silver-eyed warrior could. And when she, too, failed, Ozpin finally began to reconsider his approach. It would sync nicely with the beginning of Volume 1, where Ozpin replies to Salem's challenge with, "Or perhaps what is needed is a smaller, more honest soul." It might even be that Salem is at least partially aware of Ozpin's new tactic, of reliance upon weaker people rather than engaging in combat with her in a direct test of power, and she's interpreting it as evidence that their war is coming to an end and she is winning. Two chapters ago(?) Ozpin did say that the war against Salem was reaching a crucial point., after all. That would explain the taunting by Volume 3's end.

I like the little instances where the two souls take turns controlling Oscar. Being millennia old, Ozpin considers all the students mere children, even putting a comforting hand on Yang's shoulder. But Oscar is immediately bashful when he's in command.

I Hope we can see differences like that (or more subtle/blatant) between the two of them often throughout Volume 5.

Can hardly wait for Chapter 8.

Cinder vs Vernal? I doubt Raven is going to stand by, or be content to play with Mercury and Emerald. Barring her getting caught in Emerald's Semblance (which should be simple to avoid if there's enough bandits to help) it may end up with Watts getting involved. I'm eager to see what he can do.

This is what RWBY was like back when they were still in beacon, before all the maidens, and salem, and cinder drama went down. While this episode left me a little frustrated for more information or plot development, it wasn't bad by any means.

    TL;DR

    - Great Fill Ep. Gives us some time to see everyone reunite over dinner

    - Except for Jaune. He seems pretty out of it.

    - Reasons because of....Pyrrha...not being around...

    - Jaune also seems pretty eager to get out there and take action.

    - It's all just speculation and very 'big leaps' =P

It's great to see the team(s) have a good reunion and dinner with one another, and reference some moments from previous episodes and seasons. :)

But there's some things that should be pointed out:

Jaune...was pretty disconnected, despite reuniting with friends.

Sure, he was remarking Yang's new armament (Pun intended), and cheering for Nora, during the arm wrestle, but those two moments could have just been in the 'heat of the moment'. Before and after those moments, he was acting very down, not just in his tone but in his body language too.

His laughs, at 1:37 and 1:46, were very weak; almost empty even.

At 4:55, his entire body language fully suggests his current well being. Arms and legs crossed, eyes cast downwards with a pretty soft but stern look; he's not happy.

But why though? Shouldn't he be more joyful, being able to share a time of reunion with fellow friends?

While it's a big 'stab-in-the-dark', I believe he knows that only one group will truly be 'reunited' as a Team. And that's Team RWBY. He knows that Team JNPR can never be fully restored because...well...Pyrrha is no longer a part of the picture...

(Even though I tried to put it lightly, "That" moment still brings some shock and tears...)

As Ren goes on about the differences between everyone's past selves and current selves, at 5:08, when Ren says "...Or Stronger", Jaune reacts to that, ever so slightly. It shows that he's still beating himself over how he wasn't "strong" enough to protect Pyrrha, back then at Beacon.

He believes that if he had the 'strength' he has now, he would have been able to protect the one he truly wanted to protect with his life.

Which also brings me to another thing to point out:

Jaune seems pretty eager to get back out there; out to the fight.

Someone mentioned before that RT has a model of Jaune, without his armour equipped and should have just used that instead, for the indoor scenes. (It's not word-for-word by the way. I just remember it as that) But what if, showing Jaune, in his full gear, was not just some oversight; but intentional? Him, being fully armoured, may be a sign that Jaune doesn't want to sit idle anymore.

After Oscar/Ozpin gives the team(s) the choice to back down from the plan to combat Salem and her group (Correct me if I'm wrong about that), at 10:26, Jaune is the first to question what should be their first step in taking action. He was also first to question Ozpin's decision (10:39) to discuss that very step tomorrow, rather than right in that moment.

    But what drives this motivation?

Once again, it's quite the 'stab-in-the-dark', but it's possible that Jaune is out for revenge against Cinder, and that in finding Salem, he will also find Cinder; the one that killed Pyrrha. (Do correct me if Jaune actually does or does not know that Cinder is connected to Salem.)

BUT! This is all 'big leaps' and speculation in the end. We'll know soon enough :)

I'm probably incredibly wrong, but hey, it's nice to speculate and come up with possible reasons for everyone's actions.

The details, big and small, will always be fascinating to see. Hence, why I will never get sick of this show~ :D

    • Silver1989

I'm honestly very worried about Jaune because he might be going down the path of a "blinded by ___" story, frustrated so much by his past that his emotions cloud his reasoning and he winds up badly hurt.

    • ShankX

I could honestly see Jaune and Yang leaving the group at this point because of their mistrust of Ozpin.

    • Fr0zen12

While you've made some great observations, I also want to point out that Jaune has from the beginning be sensitive about not being "good enough". He lied his way into beacon off of fake transcripts, he got mixed up with Cardin, he was one of the weakest fighters in the school, and he's always been somewhat prideful about his abilities too (for example he turned down Pyrrha's offer to help train him). Jaune's always been much harder on himself for his own mistakes than anyone else. Your analysis is pretty much spot on, however I don't think it tells us anything new about him, he's always shown these tendencies. I honestly think he holds a grudge against anyone connected to Cinder, or Salem. Anyone who contributed to Pyrrha's death, (although especially Cinder).

So, I have a few thoguhts/questions. 1) WOO GO WREN!! We need more speeches from that man. (Wren 2020) 2) What's up with Emerald? I thought she was some what good. When the did the flashbacks in, I think volume 3, she seemed like she was only on Cinder's side because Cinder saved her, and she really didn't want to be evil, but now she is ready to kill, and suggest people be killed in an instant? Can someone explain what I might be missing? 3) Also, where is Jaune being mad at Ozpin!?! I feel like they haven't explored anything with Jaune and Phyrra. Which sucks. I feel like Jaune would be a lot more emotional especially is someone so close to him died, but it was barley touched on in Volume 4, so I hope the do something about it this year. 4) And finally, where is Yang's PTSD? Cause I am sure she would have that after losing her arm, and they started doing in in Volume 4, but it was not fully explained. Just tremors and a few flashbacks. I feel like she would still be dealing with this. Idk. If anyone has any thoughts let me know.

I totally agree with the whole Jaune/Pyrrha/Ozpin thing. They really need to touch on that, if anything to give the audience closure for Pyrrha's death (tbh a part of me still holds out for her somehow miraculous return and I wouldn't question it at all if she did haha). They sort of touched on it with the whole making her armor/weapons into Jaune's armour and weapon's things but it wasn't much. And same goes for Yang, although I bet that will come out more when Blake re-unites with the group. This episode would've been perfect for the Jaune thing because honestly nothing really happened other than they got a chance to talk.

    • Kerisato

      2) Emerald is loyal to Cinder. No matter how evil Cinder might be. And as the saying goes, Bad Company corrupts Good Character. She's probably more like Cinder now than before in Volume 3 (as opposed to Mercury who is pretty much immoral, or just lacks any conscience - being raised by an assassin can do that).

    My predictions for episode 8:

My guess is that it will be very Blake-oriented. It's been a couple weeks since she has had an episode that had her in it (episode 5) so I think that Adam is also going to make an appearance in this one.

Sorry, but Ghira is going to die. It's going to allow for a lot of character development on Blake's behalf and I think that after she escapes from Adam (or maybe fights him head on? not sure) Sun will help her through her grief. Fingers crossed that somehow she will reunite with her team in the next few episodes and FOR GOODNESS SAKE BRING NEPTUNE BACK ALREADY. :( Also, I miss team CFVY but it is unlikely they will show up in this volume. Episode 9 I think will be Bandits, Raven, and Vernal against CWEM but it's too early to say for sure.

My only question: how do you say CWEM? Actually, why do they even get an acronym?

How is it episode 7 ( more than half way) of the volume and all Ruby, ren, jaun, nora etc have done absolutly nothing but sit and have 1 "training" sequence and talk? Really disapointing. Blake's story, no action, little progression for 1 1/2 volumes, just more "forshadowing" (get on with it already!). Weiss and Yang's are the only stories that have moved. By episode 7, volume 3 had already achieved so much quality content, suspense, story building and action scenes. Same with volume 2,  volume 1 was an exception because of the short episode lengths.  The foreshadowing in volume 3 caused suspense, but due to the time they took with volume 4 and are taking with this one, the constant foreshadowing and lack of progression is really frustrating. The pacing needs desperate work for the next volume. Love RWBY but I hope the current makers improve / recognise the shortcomings of the last 2 volumes.

Your forgetting that there is 7 chapters left. Not everyone likes mindless fighting scenes just to fit with other peoples wants all the time. There isn't much they CAN do. They are trying to recruit and train to fight Salem, and trying to reunite with their team(s). Volume 3 achieved a lot less than Volume 4 has already, since Volume 3 was mostly just character development and travelling. This has been a lot better than Volume 4.

What you need OP imo, is better patience. Slower pacing like this is not only realistic, but essential to building up character development and other such important considerations- you know, the things that actually make us invested in the fights?

^Not to mention, what progression can our main characters do at this exact moment? They have no enemies to fight yet, no magical awareness of the villain developments, etc... so forcing progression purely for pacing's sake would just be a bad thing

I know action isnt the only thing to a show. I understand the intention, but  I think that in trying to make so much individual stories, they spread themselves too thin. E.g, Mercury and emerald basically not speaking / forgotten about for 1 1/2 volumes, Neo being completely absent , villain's motives apart from torchwick and adam not being explored, Hazel / adam taking a whole volume to meet up with sienna kahn when it was mentioned on the first episode of volume 4. They are trying to juggle salem, cinder, ruby, weiss, blake, yang, jaun, adam, qrow, raven, ozpin, the other salem elites etc. There are so many characters that unfortunatly in focusing on a couple of stories, they neglect or make the other characters progress too slow. E.g, Weiss taking an entire season to leave her house. She got more character development obviously, but I feel like the earlier volumes still was able to get character development in while still progressing the story at a reasonable pace. Due to having so many characters as well, they have had to not mention or forget about some pretty cool characters too like team cvfy, neptune, glynda goodwhich, ironwood, neo etc. When everyone was together they could all work off each other and therefore the story moves forward at a more reasonable pace while most characters get some level coverage. It would be difficult to manage a show with so many characters that are usually in close proximity to each other only to have them split up so much in the fall of beacon. I like the development that some of the characters have had, but it has come at a price (pacing) and neglect of other characters. Some people are ok with that, but its just not the dynamic I'm used too. Its just my opinion, I would like things to move a little faster ( obviously "fast" is not always good either). I understand there is nothing the characters can "do" now, but my issue would be they could of come up with a better way to maybe not make ruby and co sit around for 8 episodes now. No show is perfect, but its just my opinion that pacing / spreading themselves too thin is a problem lately. I love how they handled Yang's personal journey with ptsd, and the lore of the show, character designs, that the villains are so competant, the fact that the show is quite balsy with making characters have hardship and the amazing animation. They have improved with the character development, but I think there are drawbacks and massive changes to the show (good and bad) Anyway each to their own.

I'm going to have to agree to an extent. In volume 1-3 they were working with a much narrower and just less complex plot than they are now. Before the only "villain" was Cinder really (plus a couple henchmen). Now we're working with Salem, Cinder, plus this whole other council of sorts of bad guys, plus now Adam and the White Fang are really coming more and more into it. That alone makes the plot go much slower due to a need to touch on all of it. And then on top of that, they shipped all 4 main characters of RWBY out to different continents essentially. Meaning they've split the plot an additional 4 ways, all of which need to be progressed at a somewhat similar pace. This all is a lot more complex than when they were just back at beacon, training, encountering grim occasionally, and fighting the white fang every few episodes. So it's understandable that it's moving a little slower, but now that the gang's starting to re-unite, I have high hopes that the pace picks up a bit.

I feel this volume was more geared to showing the progress of Weiss Blake and Yang. Volume 4 was largely on Ruby and gang so I think they wanted to shift the focus this time. Also, like what's said above, there's nothing much to show for Ruby and gang at this point of the episode. I don't think fans would enjoy just watching them train all the time with nothing else. This volume is also rather about them settling down and resolving dramas with each other so yeah hence the talking

Got so bored last month that I cancelled my First account and stopped watching. Came back today and watched 3 straight episodes of people sitting around talking about their feelings and judging each other. This show used to be good. Things used to happen.

Fucking Australian Internet making me have to watch this episode 25 seconds at a time with 2 minute loading for that 25 seconds of footage at 480p because it's raining.

Mercury's not really like a main character though. He's kind of a secondary character. He's essentially a henchman, and with how complex the plot's gotten. It's understandable that he wouldn't be given many lines...
