Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

So, I wasn't sure how to start this but..I suppose and apology is in order. Im sorry for how I reacted when episode 8 came out. Regardless of personal opinions on the content, I try to avoid outright arguing with anyone, and I failed in doing that.

I'll do my best to ensure it doesn't happen again, and if anyone was bothered by my comments, I do apologize.

Having had a few days to cool off from all the arguing, heres my FINAL stance on the Ilia situation, and after this I will not bring it up again unless prompted.

Can villian LGBT characters exsist? Absolutely. I have never claimed otherwise.

Am i tired of seeing more openly gay

villains than i am heros however? Oh yeah.

Do i think RT had bad intentions with this?

After a lot of thinking, No. But i DO think its a bummer that their going this route.

That's all i got. i tried to be as neutral in this response as I could. Im not really angry at RT anymore just..disapointed i guess. I was really hoping it wouldn't be like this, but theres nothing i can do.

If your point is bitch bitch i want a gay bi trans main character than thats pathetic. If gender and sexual preference mean so much to you stop watching rwby and expecting this to be the highlight of it. Rwby shouldnt be about LGBT issues, it shouldnt be about shipping. Just watch.

Openly gay vs Closet gay (with lots of hints) makes little difference in my book.  One is for fans to theorize and fanfic about, the other is for faster exposition to conclude a story arc.  Both narratives have their place.

However, it should be noted that Illya is remarkedly different from say, Torchwick (openly evil and loved it).  Illya is a redeemable, but misguided, character.  She'll either have a turnabout moment or fall due to her own inability to see Adam for the scum he is.

Ilia is a swing character, she can switch to the good side or bad side at any time, she just needs a different type of push. She had a huge potential for a character arch, in which I wouldn't say she will stay as antagonist forever, though would I say she will go join team RWBY; no. Towards the end of the series, or possibly seasons, I think she will help take down the white fang, including Salem in later series. Though this is just my opinion, and it could be completely untrue.

As for their sexual orientation for Ilia, I don't really see it being a problem if she remains an antagonists through the entire series, or switches sides eventually. I don't see why her orientation ever matters, if anything it fuels the story between Blake/Ilia.

      @adam2186

Did she say she wanted an LGBT main character? No. She said she's tired of seeing more VILLAINS be LGBT rather than HEROES. Said nothing about it being a main character. And since you're being a disrespectful asshole and suggesting they stop watching RWBY, i suggest you should stop watching instead, as the RWBY community shouldn't have anti-LGBT bigots and homophobes like you.

Bumblebee is the ship name for Blake and Yang. Yang's eyes have been doing that since the yellow trailer. I'm guessing you haven't been in this fandom for long (that was not meant to be in an offensive way).

So has Weiss actually told anyone about her being disowned by her father? If she hasn't, that fits. But if she has, Yang's whole spiel feels kinda... err... in poor taste. "You have no idea what it's like to be alone, person who literally just walked away from her family/home/country with little to no hope of ever returning!"

This is why you don't negotiate with terrorists. And why meeting with an enemy's weak link to wear a wire. I bet ya that Blake is gonna fail and her father is gonna die but her mom will survive and the White Fang will be able to spin it off. Seeing as how the series has went that's a likely outcome.

    • dimensionsatire

That seems to be the way this is going. Kill the dad, mom's a wreck, Blake has that character growth moment/episode and gains the strength and determination to rise above the adversity and truly take the pain of loss and transform it into a force for good to fight back against the Fang

If her mother survives .. spinning it off would be impossible. As well as quite a few white fang corpses around they cant just go ''Ohh ahh Huntsman..did..it.. our members defended..him" Come now. Also Blake leadinging the Anti-White fang adam faction AND being in team RWBY dont seem to be hand in hand activities.. So if that occurs wouldnt mom be leading it? Or hell maybe Ghria survives and is severely wounded.

    • wander4wonder FIRST Member Star(s) Indication of membership status - One star is a FIRST member, two stars is Double Gold

It would be in poor taste to think that just because a character is lgbt that we must make them the hero and never assume that all kinds of people can have all kinds of orientations. It would be rediculous to think that RT is characterizing Illiya this way because they dissaprove of the lgbt community and that they should be villanized, just look at how many employees at RT are lgbt. Sexual orientation is a neutral characteristic and should be described to both good and bad guys to show how anyone can be straight or gay or etc.

    • emilyblack

I mean, I agree in a way Wander, but the thing is when the only openly lgbt character you have in the main cast is working for a family murdering terroists-Im well aware theres been a couple background characters-it can be seen as kinda bad.

As someone IN the community myself, I won't sit here and lie i would most certainly prefer if Ilia was a hero instead.

I don't think RT had bad intentions, but it does comes across a little rough.

    • hoysynsauce

emilyblack I think that logic only applies to people who have that negative mindset about LGBT+ people in the first place, and only really a small subset of them. If you're neutral or supportive of the community, you're hardly going to turn round and go "Huh, Ilia is evil, and Ilia is LGBT+ of some variety, guess LGBT+ people are evil", even for large number of LGBT+ villains. Sure there's technically correlation there but there's no reason for the two facts to be linked - they're not linking any of her bad behaviour to being LGBT+ after all

You know I just thought there is a possibility she will go feral on Adam and eat his carcass like a wild animal, then she could "fill the void" so to speak.

Seems like we're in for a pivotal showdown with the Albain brothers.  Hopefully that will be the episode where they've diverted the attention of the choreographers, and won't leave us questioning if the writers have forgotten how Aura works.  RWBY still has capability for fantastic fights like with Tyrian and the Nuckalavee, despite some over-dramatic proclamations.  But scenes where there HASN'T been any attention paid to the fighting are obvious, and do take us out of the show.  Trifa (the spider woman) and her partner were knocked out with single blows.  But compare them to the showdown with the Malachite Twins, in the Yellow trailer:  A pair of club dancers, with no real role in the show, managed to give and receive more blows than the elite assassins of the White Fang.  How can that be?

Also worth noting that half the blows in that scene relied on people coming in from off-screen.  Blake is knocked down by someone landing on her, Sun takes out his target by landing on them, and Trifa is taken out because Blake grabs her from outside the shot, then we cut to a punch.  This seems to be a trick to imply that a blow is powerful without making the effort to account for however-the-heck Aura works.

    • -Shark_Face-

You know they have to kill her dad. As a matyre for Blake and also a breaking point where she looses all sympathy for the White Fang. Also she needs to join the unwhole family theme we got going here. I know also it won't match the trend of the White Fang's escaping streak but I hope those two creepy cult dudes are TORN APART!!!

I officially hate Illia right now, not as a character but as a person. Not because she has a supercrush on Blake (I actually couldn't care less about that, as I'm not picky on pairings in shows and stuff as long as all my favourite characters can go on to be be happy and healthy. Seriously, that's all I ask.) but because she's letting it cloud her judgement, which is just not how you deal with rejection. I don't think she's irredeemable or anything, she just needs to get grip before she goes too far... I loved her as a character and thought she was actually starting to realize that what she's doing is wrong, but no. Apparently all she could think of was being more like Adam so Blake would like her more or something (despite the fact that Blake absolutely despises Adam now, so that's kinda ironic. Maybe they're dating now cuz they both got rejected. Wouldn't that be a twist?) And while we're on the subject, I hope we get some LGBT+ characters that aren't villains. That'd be nice. Just a thought though.

And no, CRWBY, you cannot kill the only good mom in your series. That should be illegal or something. She better be safe up there, I stg.

Also, 1) Yang totally jumpscared me in the beginning. 2) I like that Weiss remembered how Ruby took her coffee. It's a nice touch and really sweet of her (pun only kind of intended). 3) Every time they're all 3 on screen together I get a little teary tbh...

Something that hadn't occurred to me before, and I only realized because of other comments, is that Ilia may be confessing her past feelings to Blake just because she knows that she'll never see Blake again... once Adam gets his hands on her.  Ilia is probably thinking that if she doesn't rip that band-aid away now, it will just eat at her until she dies.  What Ilia does end up choosing to do is painful for her, but she probably feels like the alternative will hurt worse in the long run.  That's actually what she's accepted as her lot in life, come to think of it.

I don't see Ilia betraying the Belladonnas directly BECAUSE of unreturned romantic feelings.   In fact, I'd be really annoyed if Ilia DID come back to the light side for her feelings for Blake.  One, because "Love saves the day and can redeem anyone" is really played out.  Two, because that would actually seem self-centered on Ilia's part.  What she's doing is arguably is wrong and won't work out for anyone, but she's doing it with all the Faunus of the world in mind.  If she decided to switch sides solely for the chance of getting with Blake, for her OWN happiness, I'd lose a lot of respect for her.

Before anyone reads this I'm sorry in advance for rambling. I really didn't mean to, but I just love discussing stuff like this! Also, I may have missed a few things or been misinformed or what have you (I've been trying to edit and re-edit this specific reply for a while, honestly, and this still isn't all exactly right) but just know that putting all the thoughts I have on these subjects into words, especially typing, is really difficult. I hope you know that how I feel about all the characters in the show (yes, even Adam) are very complex and I love them all for different reasons and I love CRWBY for making amazing characters that all make the viewers feel something! It's a hard thing to do when writing, so I really can't commend them enough for doing it so well.

      Anyways...

@adam2186 I'm gonna make something a bit clearer. I love these characters as characters and I only really hate Ilia temporarily (kind of like when you get into a fight with a friend and stop talking for a bit, but I digress). And that does include Adam. He makes a really good villain and does the job well. You can see their motives and why they think their method is the only good one. As I said, I dislike them (them not just being Adam and Ilia at this point) as people, much like Blake and other protagonist characters do, for refusing to listen to reason and being blinded by impulse. For being so manipulative in ways that benefit no one but themselves and not thinking of the repercussions of their actions. For being violent towards anyone who thinks, "Maybe we should stop killing people who are just living their lives. If they don't hurt us, why should we hurt them?". For setting Grimm loose on a campus and in a city with innocent people-humans and faunus alike-and acting like it was for the people's own protection! You're right. I don't like that they kill people, but it's much more than that. But if they were real people, can you really tell me you'd like them as people? Want to be best friends or business partners or anything like that? If so, I'd like to hear your reasons why, because those seem like just all around bad friendships to me...

And in that sense yes, they're doing an amazing job of being the villains they were created to be. If a character comes on screen and they make you angry to look at, that usually means the writers are doing something right, because they're showing those characters in a light that makes you feel that way. It would likely work the same if we saw the entire situation from the other perspective, if the writers made Adam, Cinder, Salem, etc. sympathetic characters in the viewers' eyes, explaining their backstory, their reasonings, their fears, etc. and left out Team RWBY's motives and positive qualities, labelling Weiss nothing but a whiny brat, Yang an impulsive loudmouth, and so on with no character development at all. That's just how stories work. There's multiple sides to every story. We're just hearing this one.

But that's just my thoughts on the matter. I'd personally love to see a spinoff from the opposing side's perspective... I think it'd be interesting to see.

Now on the subject of this side of the story:

@DragonTurtle2 I did see those kinds of comments after making this one, and it makes a lot of sense. I know if I were in that situation, it would be a tough decision. She still thinks of Blake as someone she cares for, so it must have been a terrible war in her mind of "Do I say it or do I leave it be?". Telling the person you're betraying that you loved them really messes both of you up, I'm sure! For one thing it puts in Ilia's head "How can I say I love her if I'm just bringing her to her inevitable death/torture?" and Blake would wonder "Could I have stopped this if I'd noticed and done something sooner?" But on the other hand, not saying anything would likely drive Ilia mad with guilt and leave Blake wondering why someone she considered a friend would do something like this, so either way would have hurt just as bad.

Ilia's betrayal may not be directly caused by rejection, but the decision to follow and be more like Adam in the first place seems to have been. That drive to be like him in turn led to doing what he told her to, and we know where that got us. So I agree rejection isn't the direct cause, but indirectly I believe it is.

I didn't hope Ilia was going to be redeemed through the power of love, either, but I did think she had the capacity to be redeemed through reason, especially if the person reasoning with her was one she trusted. She seems like a smart girl, and she seems like she doesn't actually want to do any of this; like she wants to leave the White Fang but can't. At least that's what her body language suggests whenever she talks about it. But something is keeping her in it, and I'm curious to know what that is, if that really is the case... Either way I still do hope for an Ilia redemption. Hopefully not through ~The Power of Love and Friendship~ or whatever, but through reasoning and morals, because I know she still has those somewhere deep down, and the realization that killing the people you're trying to protect is not only cruel, but also counterproductive and that the White Fang may just be going about things in the wrong way for some reason...

So, I'm not going to quite call that a confession from Yang, but... ditto Ilia, you don't get THAT angry at somebody you don't love.

And speaking of Ilia, the game she's playing is going to get her killed. It's going to work, it looks like, but it's going to cost her life. That might be the catalyst that finally gets Blake moving.

You do know romantic love isn't the only kind of love right? There is nothing in the Yang scene that hints at romantic love. Yang specifically talked about why she was mad. She has major abandonment issues. She clearly cares for Blake (though nothing hints that its in a romantic way). So, having yet another person she cares about leave her without any explanation or good-bye is like a punch in the gut. That doesn't necessarily mean romantic feelings unless you read way into it.  I have nothing against Bumblebee as a ship. I won't complain if it happens. I just honestly think people are reading too deeply into things. Having to see romance in every interaction between characters cheapens the deep friendship between them.

Every season I think 'there's no way they can improve on the animation' and every season CRWBY proves me wrong.

    Also: spider faunus! hell yes!

Don't know why that other guy's getting flamed for their opinion. I also don't find the new animation style an improvement over the previous. Yes, the lighting is more nuanced, but the movement of characters still lacks fluidity among other things. Subjectively, I also happen to like the 'pseudo-2D' animation, as Monty called it, of previous volumes.
