Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

I've enjoyed this season as a whole, but i don't know, this episode just felt like old RWBY again. I haven't felt that original show vibe since like volume 3 (Even though the shows quality has drastically improved) and I was so excited to feel it again this episode. Every second was just amazing, loving this seasons direction!

Ha! Kali isn’t the cat Faunus, like everyone was suggesting in vol. 4. It’s Gihra. I called it. He’s not a house cat he’s a Big cat. Emphasis on big. Cause jeeze he was one-shoting those guys.

Also I think it’s fair to say the other shoe has officially dropped. Though I still feel another that is ever yet looming.

In what way is Khali not a cat fanus? She has the same cat ears as Blake. They are clearly both a type cat.

They are Both cat faunus. Which explains why Blake is ALSO a cat as seen in the WoR episode.
Ghira is a reference  to Bagheera, a big Black cat. Specifically a panther. Kali and her ears vs Blake's is self apparent.

They all apear to be panthers! Since he is a male his traits are more dominant&are likely to be unleashed when triggered/necessary. His wife seems to be docile but no push over. I'm sure if Mama Belladonna had to protect her cub from imminent danger, then the claws will come out. The same with Blake/unless she has not really fully giving into her beast nature.

I just realized the last time we had a fight scene with all of Team RWBY was the first chapter of Volume 3, and the last time they all fought together outside of the Vital festival tournament was Volume 2. The first Team RWBY fight after Blake joins back up with them is going to be a VERY big deal

I predict that Neo will be at the camp.   Salem controls the Grimm, the Grimm killed Roman, they were probably friends, and we don't know where she landed.  She'd be looking for revenge and what better way to get it.  Raven will take all the help she can get.

Seems like we're in for a pivotal showdown with the Albain brothers.  Hopefully that will be the episode where they've diverted the attention of the choreographers, and won't leave us questioning if the writers have forgotten how Aura works.  RWBY still has capability for fantastic fights like with Tyrian and the Nuckalavee, despite some over-dramatic proclamations.  But scenes where there HASN'T been any attention paid to the fighting are obvious, and do take us out of the show.  Trifa (the spider woman) and her partner were knocked out with single blows.  But compare them to the showdown with the Malachite Twins, in the Yellow trailer:  A pair of club dancers, with no real role in the show, managed to give and receive more blows than the elite assassins of the White Fang.  How can that be?

Also worth noting that half the blows in that scene relied on people coming in from off-screen.  Blake is knocked down by someone landing on her, Sun takes out his target by landing on them, and Trifa is taken out because Blake grabs her from outside the shot, then we cut to a punch.  This seems to be a trick to imply that a blow is powerful without making the effort to account for however-the-heck Aura works.

You know they have to kill her dad. As a matyre for Blake and also a breaking point where she looses all sympathy for the White Fang. Also she needs to join the unwhole family theme we got going here. I know also it won't match the trend of the White Fang's escaping streak but I hope those two creepy cult dudes are TORN APART!!!

I'm so proud of how far Blake and Sun have progressed since volume 4!!! Blake learning not to handle things alone and opening up to Sun to allow him to help her, and Sun becoming much more perceptive to Blake's emotions to where he recognises when something is bothering her. It just makes me really happy and I hope they both make it out of this situation okay!!!

I officially hate Illia right now, not as a character but as a person. Not because she has a supercrush on Blake (I actually couldn't care less about that, as I'm not picky on pairings in shows and stuff as long as all my favourite characters can go on to be be happy and healthy. Seriously, that's all I ask.) but because she's letting it cloud her judgement, which is just not how you deal with rejection. I don't think she's irredeemable or anything, she just needs to get grip before she goes too far... I loved her as a character and thought she was actually starting to realize that what she's doing is wrong, but no. Apparently all she could think of was being more like Adam so Blake would like her more or something (despite the fact that Blake absolutely despises Adam now, so that's kinda ironic. Maybe they're dating now cuz they both got rejected. Wouldn't that be a twist?) And while we're on the subject, I hope we get some LGBT+ characters that aren't villains. That'd be nice. Just a thought though.

And no, CRWBY, you cannot kill the only good mom in your series. That should be illegal or something. She better be safe up there, I stg.

Also, 1) Yang totally jumpscared me in the beginning. 2) I like that Weiss remembered how Ruby took her coffee. It's a nice touch and really sweet of her (pun only kind of intended). 3) Every time they're all 3 on screen together I get a little teary tbh...

Something that hadn't occurred to me before, and I only realized because of other comments, is that Ilia may be confessing her past feelings to Blake just because she knows that she'll never see Blake again... once Adam gets his hands on her.  Ilia is probably thinking that if she doesn't rip that band-aid away now, it will just eat at her until she dies.  What Ilia does end up choosing to do is painful for her, but she probably feels like the alternative will hurt worse in the long run.  That's actually what she's accepted as her lot in life, come to think of it.

I don't see Ilia betraying the Belladonnas directly BECAUSE of unreturned romantic feelings.   In fact, I'd be really annoyed if Ilia DID come back to the light side for her feelings for Blake.  One, because "Love saves the day and can redeem anyone" is really played out.  Two, because that would actually seem self-centered on Ilia's part.  What she's doing is arguably is wrong and won't work out for anyone, but she's doing it with all the Faunus of the world in mind.  If she decided to switch sides solely for the chance of getting with Blake, for her OWN happiness, I'd lose a lot of respect for her.

Before anyone reads this I'm sorry in advance for rambling. I really didn't mean to, but I just love discussing stuff like this! Also, I may have missed a few things or been misinformed or what have you (I've been trying to edit and re-edit this specific reply for a while, honestly, and this still isn't all exactly right) but just know that putting all the thoughts I have on these subjects into words, especially typing, is really difficult. I hope you know that how I feel about all the characters in the show (yes, even Adam) are very complex and I love them all for different reasons and I love CRWBY for making amazing characters that all make the viewers feel something! It's a hard thing to do when writing, so I really can't commend them enough for doing it so well.

      Anyways...

@adam2186 I'm gonna make something a bit clearer. I love these characters as characters and I only really hate Ilia temporarily (kind of like when you get into a fight with a friend and stop talking for a bit, but I digress). And that does include Adam. He makes a really good villain and does the job well. You can see their motives and why they think their method is the only good one. As I said, I dislike them (them not just being Adam and Ilia at this point) as people, much like Blake and other protagonist characters do, for refusing to listen to reason and being blinded by impulse. For being so manipulative in ways that benefit no one but themselves and not thinking of the repercussions of their actions. For being violent towards anyone who thinks, "Maybe we should stop killing people who are just living their lives. If they don't hurt us, why should we hurt them?". For setting Grimm loose on a campus and in a city with innocent people-humans and faunus alike-and acting like it was for the people's own protection! You're right. I don't like that they kill people, but it's much more than that. But if they were real people, can you really tell me you'd like them as people? Want to be best friends or business partners or anything like that? If so, I'd like to hear your reasons why, because those seem like just all around bad friendships to me...

And in that sense yes, they're doing an amazing job of being the villains they were created to be. If a character comes on screen and they make you angry to look at, that usually means the writers are doing something right, because they're showing those characters in a light that makes you feel that way. It would likely work the same if we saw the entire situation from the other perspective, if the writers made Adam, Cinder, Salem, etc. sympathetic characters in the viewers' eyes, explaining their backstory, their reasonings, their fears, etc. and left out Team RWBY's motives and positive qualities, labelling Weiss nothing but a whiny brat, Yang an impulsive loudmouth, and so on with no character development at all. That's just how stories work. There's multiple sides to every story. We're just hearing this one.

But that's just my thoughts on the matter. I'd personally love to see a spinoff from the opposing side's perspective... I think it'd be interesting to see.

Now on the subject of this side of the story:

@DragonTurtle2 I did see those kinds of comments after making this one, and it makes a lot of sense. I know if I were in that situation, it would be a tough decision. She still thinks of Blake as someone she cares for, so it must have been a terrible war in her mind of "Do I say it or do I leave it be?". Telling the person you're betraying that you loved them really messes both of you up, I'm sure! For one thing it puts in Ilia's head "How can I say I love her if I'm just bringing her to her inevitable death/torture?" and Blake would wonder "Could I have stopped this if I'd noticed and done something sooner?" But on the other hand, not saying anything would likely drive Ilia mad with guilt and leave Blake wondering why someone she considered a friend would do something like this, so either way would have hurt just as bad.

Ilia's betrayal may not be directly caused by rejection, but the decision to follow and be more like Adam in the first place seems to have been. That drive to be like him in turn led to doing what he told her to, and we know where that got us. So I agree rejection isn't the direct cause, but indirectly I believe it is.

I didn't hope Ilia was going to be redeemed through the power of love, either, but I did think she had the capacity to be redeemed through reason, especially if the person reasoning with her was one she trusted. She seems like a smart girl, and she seems like she doesn't actually want to do any of this; like she wants to leave the White Fang but can't. At least that's what her body language suggests whenever she talks about it. But something is keeping her in it, and I'm curious to know what that is, if that really is the case... Either way I still do hope for an Ilia redemption. Hopefully not through ~The Power of Love and Friendship~ or whatever, but through reasoning and morals, because I know she still has those somewhere deep down, and the realization that killing the people you're trying to protect is not only cruel, but also counterproductive and that the White Fang may just be going about things in the wrong way for some reason...

So, I'm not going to quite call that a confession from Yang, but... ditto Ilia, you don't get THAT angry at somebody you don't love.

And speaking of Ilia, the game she's playing is going to get her killed. It's going to work, it looks like, but it's going to cost her life. That might be the catalyst that finally gets Blake moving.

You do know romantic love isn't the only kind of love right? There is nothing in the Yang scene that hints at romantic love. Yang specifically talked about why she was mad. She has major abandonment issues. She clearly cares for Blake (though nothing hints that its in a romantic way). So, having yet another person she cares about leave her without any explanation or good-bye is like a punch in the gut. That doesn't necessarily mean romantic feelings unless you read way into it.  I have nothing against Bumblebee as a ship. I won't complain if it happens. I just honestly think people are reading too deeply into things. Having to see romance in every interaction between characters cheapens the deep friendship between them.

Don't know why that other guy's getting flamed for their opinion. I also don't find the new animation style an improvement over the previous. Yes, the lighting is more nuanced, but the movement of characters still lacks fluidity among other things. Subjectively, I also happen to like the 'pseudo-2D' animation, as Monty called it, of previous volumes.

No this is a good point. Weiss has developed the best as a character and is probably the strongest out of the team now. Rubys development has been really dumb. People think she understands loss and the cruel reality of the real world but i raise the point that 1. She wanted to be a huntress and its not a long life career. Constantly put in situations that put you at deaths risk and 2. Her mum is dead from being a huntress. Loss should have been real to ruby from day 1.

Not seeing Blake this Saturday will be painful and we're unlikely to see what happens until a week and a half once you look at CRWBY's pattern.  The camp will be the center focus.  Here's to hoping for an episode that's long enough to cover both though.  Also Ghira and Kali are both dead to me.  Sorry folks but one of them will throw their life for the other, but neither of them will make it out alive.

Giving all my love to CRWBY for this amazing episode. Loved the level of detail too, like the four birds in the beginning, with one flying off on its own (Blake), or, as someone else mentioned, Blake apparently has a scar from when she was stabbed. That and the facial expressions were amazing! I loved Barb, Kara, Arryn, and Cherami's performances this episode. They were absolutely perfect. Also, that spider faunus looks less creepy than I was imagining, but it's still a really cool and unique design. Also, yay, new faunus! Still waiting for birds.

No, a lot of people love Blake, they just hate the route the creators keep making for her, that's why they get angry.

Other than that, Blake is awesome!!

  • Dommod1995

Okay WOW, that was an intense episode, both in terms of the emotional weight as well as the action at the end!!!

So to begin this chapter, we start at the courtyard of the house that RWY, JNR, Oscar and Qrow have been staying at; I have to comment on how stunning the scenery in Mistral is, as well as how tranquil the background music was. I really enjoyed the cute sisterly moment where Yang dangles her hair over Ruby to make her giggle, it's moments like these that I was looking forward to after Ruby and Yang reunited. Also really liked Ruby's comment about how 'nice Weiss strikes again', Weiss really has gotten nicer as the show has progressed.

Moving on to the more serious emotions of this scene is Yang's reaction to Blake being brought up; I wasn't sure what I was expecting, I knew that she was hurt due to Blake's abandonment and that there would be some underlying anger or resentment, but I didn't expect it to be this intense at just the mention of Blake. The later scene with Weiss and Yang helps put things into perspective; Blake leaving is only the latest departure in a long line of people abandoning Yang, first Raven left, then Summer died, after that Taiyang was emotionally damaged and kept busy with teaching and to add onto all of that Yang had no one to confide in due to Ruby being to young.

Because of Yang's loneliness, I think Weiss was the perfect person to talk to her in this moment. While Yang has been more physically abandoned by her family, Weiss has been more emotionally abandoned, despite the fact that her family members are all alive (also wow, having to hear that your parents don't love each other on your 10th birthday is so messed up). I also like how Weiss stated that there were different types of loneliness as I think it relates to the quote at the start of the 'White Trailer'. I thought the rendition of 'The path to isolation' was very fitting for this scene due to the theme of loneliness, I also really loved how Weiss said she would be there for Yang; I'm not sure if they're setting up a romantic relationship between Weiss and Yang or whether the writers are just trying to strengthen their friendship but either way I am totally cool with it.

Now, to the Blake scenes! We start with Blake finding the note from Ilia and then Sun coming to fetch Blake so they can do some more recruiting (it's so cool how Menagerie has a nocturnal section for certain faunus just like how there is the water market for aquatic faunus). One thing I really love about this scene is how Sun recognises that something is bothering Blake, he's become a lot more perceptive to her emotions over the course of the show and I'm really glad.

After this Blake go's to meet Ilia in a secluded spot but is betrayed by Ilia and ambushed by Yuma, Trifa and another White Fang member (Trifa's spider faunus trait is so cool, in fact a lot of faunus traits end up being super useful). The look of complete fear on Blake's face was really well animated, first when she learns her family is going to killed and secondly when she learns she's going to be taken to Adam. We also get a confession from Ilia that she wanted Blake to look at her the same way she looked at Adam thus confirming that Ilia had romantic feelings for Blake (therefore making Ilia the first named LGBT character, which I'm sure a lot of people are happy about); this confession also helps clarify what the relationship between Blake and Adam was.

After Ilia and Yuma leave, Blake signals Sun to come to come save her; Sun lands on the chest of the unnamed WF member and then briefly engages in combat with Trifa managing to disarm her before Blake swings her around and knocks her out. I'm really happy that Sun's sneak attack skills have improved and love the teamwork between Blake and Sun! I'm also thrilled that Blake recognised that this might have been a trap and so she asked Sun to hide nearby just in case, really shows how much Blake's grown as a character that she's willing to ask for help instead of shouldering the burden by herself.

On to the final section, It was great when Kali just picked up the fallen guard's weapon and started firing without hesitation, also Ghira's a beast when it comes to hand to hand combat (hope he has an unlocked aura). First he grabs a WF member by the leg and slams him against the wall, then he 'gut punches' another guy into the air and slams his head into the ground and after that he 'karate chops' a final dude in the neck. The Albain twins weapons are quite interesting, I wonder how good they are in a fight. Anyway now we finally know Ghira's faunus trait is claws as opposed to cat feet or fur, also that roar at the end was terrifying! I guess Ghira pulled of his coat so he could be more agile, luckily he still has the armour around his lower torso.

I'm really worried for Ghira, Kali and Sun in this fight because I think if anyone's going to die it going to be one of those three (I really don't want Sun to die as he's one my favourite characters and I want to see his relationship with Blake continue to develop). I've heard people talking about if Ilia can be redeemed or not, I think it depends on the outcome of the fight; if Ghira, Kali or Sun is killed than I don't think there will be any redemption for Ilia as she would have directly caused the death of someone Blake cares about deeply!

I feel like there is a strong parallel between Ilia in this episode and Adam in chapter 11 of volume 3, both stating romantic interest in Blake while at the same time planning to hurt or kill someone Blake cares about! I feel like this was foreshadowed in chapter 5 when Blake said that Ilia was 'not like Adam, not yet at least' and then she stated 'but I don't know how long that will last'.

Even though the fight scenes were short in time, I believe they were high in quality(good animation, exciting choreography); the voice acting and facial animations were tremendous this chapter! Fantastic job CRWBY!!!

After the talk Weiss and Yang had I can see a Yang and Blake reunion going one of three ways.

    1) Yang hits Blake and yells at her letting all of her anger out.

    2) Yang has a complete emotional break down while hugging Blake.

    3) Number 1 followed by number 2

So a buddy pointed out when Blake turns to Sun after she's freed you can see the scar where Adam stabbed her.

yeah nah, hes right, round about -2:06, there is a very faint, but visible line above her belt, and under the left side of her coat thats off to the side from her belly button. Nice little detail.

Oh my God!  Is your friend freaking Sherlock?!  Initially I thought it was just that they'd drawn her hip jutting but at 13:11 you can see it's more of an X shape.  Must be the scar.  Good spot!  Also, break my heart all over again, man.

Why is Blake all of a sudden everyone's love interest? First Adam, with his unhealthy obsession with her, then the Bumblebee ship that is turning canon, then Sun, who is absolutely being friend-zoned, and now Illya, who apparently was going all "notice me, senpai" before Blake left the White Fang. Heck, with just a little push, I'm sure that Checkmate could become a legitimate thing. I understand having some romance in the show, even the shipping kind that is Bumblebee. But this is way to much for one character.

Well, too be fair, the anger and sadness Yang has over Blake leaving is emotionally more viable an argument for Bumblebee, than the hug is for the Freezerburn claim.

I know this is gonna sound like a complaint but why no Jaune? I mean I get everyone didn't like him in Volume 1 but seriously no training, non of him talking to Oscar even him just bonding with team rwby would be nice, not saying I dislike the attention on Team Rwby in general but when you have such a wide range of characters staying with just those people starts to grow boring if your like me who actually preferred the JNPR or even Jaune story line.

Well JNPR got a lot of screentime in volume 4 and it's pretty clear from the opening that this volume would be about RWBY getting back together.

Hey look more backstory, more tension, more Freezerburn moments (I mean that in a NON-SHIPPING way), cool new Faunas (oohh, spider is cool) and finally one theory confirmed. Ilia does love Blake. Oh, and Adam is still a monster in every sense. Just think about it, if Adam wasn't there Ilia could've turned out so much better...

I'm gay and I really think Illya telling Blake that she had a crush on her wasn't necessary at all. I mean, wth? Why say that in that moment? It's perfectly possible that she felt that way but it makes no sense for her to say that when she's going to do something terrible to Blake.

    • Ninja_tude

Because she believes its the last time shes ever going to see Blake. She knows what Adam intends to do. Its a last chance at parting words and farewells

I think it was kind of a final confession kind of thing; for all Ilia knows that could've been the last time she saw Blake before she was taken to Adam and even if she did see her again Blake wouldn't want to talk to her after Ilia killed her parents so she probably wanted to get it off her chest, plus it related to when Blake said 'You don't have to do this, this isn't you' as it shows Blake doesn't understand Ilia as well as she thought she did! There are also some people in the FNDM who have been wanting an LGBT character to be introduced, so that kind of factors in as well.

It was to drive home to Blake that she didn't know her nearly as well as she thought she did. At least that's the impression I got from it.
