Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together

RWBY: Volume 5, Chapter 8: Alone Together

Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang are each entangled in journeys of their own, but they all share one destination: Haven Academy. Whether it's the promise of ancient relics, mystical maidens, or simply more power, it's clear that the stage for the next great battle for Remnant has been chosen. The question is, with so many players in this game, who's going to come out on top?

I really hope they don't show the bat guy flying, because his wings are too small for him to flight.

    • c4blec Way of the 3rd Dimension

Yeah, with that wingspan the most he should be able to do is better maneuver his falling (not even gliding).

The only way I can see those wings fly is maybe through the use of enough Wind Dust under them?

He looks hella cool though, I have to say.

You teasing motherfudgers!!! I was getting so into it and then y’all leave us off on that?!?! Nice episode nonetheless, and awesome twist with Ilia at the end with her feelings of Blake and Adam. I wasn’t expecting the love triangle already, but then you guys flip the script and have it so Ilia was crushing on Blake instead of Adam. And I am absolutely LOVING the character development with Ruby, Weiss, and Yang. And Blake is slowly starting to find her way as well. Great job guys!

P.S. Geera, Kali, and Sun are totes in the danger list of getting killed off. I’m scared

Not everyone's got aura unlocked. I get it.

Aura requires a conscious effort. I get it.

However Sun in Season 1 as an aura-user was able to defeat 12 generic white fang henchmen *with no effort*. From what we've seen so far one single guard using aura (or Ghira himself) should've been enough to take down the whole raid team.

Blake is also skilled enough to activate her aura in time, but instead was knocked down by the bat-guy, having a hard time getting up. Not to mention all non-generic white fang members were described by Blake of being hardened by the environment; hardened enough she was able to pass Beacon's tests with outstanding results, implying they all develop auras. Yet spider woman and bat guy were taken day waaaay too easily. Maybe they just got recently promoted from being generic hench?

    • luminedracone

Bat guy, also known as Yuma, was not taken down, he left with Ilia before Blake called Sun in for help. The person that Sun took down was some unnamed White Fang member.

    • AlZanfardino

Aura and semblance are different. Aura only protects the body from harm, or enhance attacks and use dust. Semblance is a manifestation of the aura in a unique way to the person. Volume 1 Sun's semblance needed him to focus for a while before the copies showed up. Blake's semblance would have saved her from the bat but she didn't know the attack was coming so how could she have dodged out of the way?

And if you recall you need to focus the aura prior to being hit so that you can shield from the damage, the bat and spider had no time to focus on defense so they were unable to protect themselves. So yes aura would have helped, but if you can't move (spider-webbed) then how can you fight?

Also the raid team consented of numerous mid-to-high ranking White Fang members so they would be able to protect themselves in a fight, they also had the element of surprise which is the greatest factor in deciding who may win.

    • Omegafire18

Sun was trained as a Huntsman at Shade Academy. The team guarding Kali and Ghira (as well as those who went after Blake) are not, so at most they'd have Aura, but not nearly to the level/skill of Huntsmen

^Not to mention, Blake walked into the trap knowing she'd be ambushed, specifically to get information. Once the right moment came, she deliberately called for Sun

Seems like we're in for a pivotal showdown with the Albain brothers.  Hopefully that will be the episode where they've diverted the attention of the choreographers, and won't leave us questioning if the writers have forgotten how Aura works.  RWBY still has capability for fantastic fights like with Tyrian and the Nuckalavee, despite some over-dramatic proclamations.  But scenes where there HASN'T been any attention paid to the fighting are obvious, and do take us out of the show.  Trifa (the spider woman) and her partner were knocked out with single blows.  But compare them to the showdown with the Malachite Twins, in the Yellow trailer:  A pair of club dancers, with no real role in the show, managed to give and receive more blows than the elite assassins of the White Fang.  How can that be?

Also worth noting that half the blows in that scene relied on people coming in from off-screen.  Blake is knocked down by someone landing on her, Sun takes out his target by landing on them, and Trifa is taken out because Blake grabs her from outside the shot, then we cut to a punch.  This seems to be a trick to imply that a blow is powerful without making the effort to account for however-the-heck Aura works.

    • frostheart5

At worst they're consistent in being inconsistent.  Hand-to-hand and other blunt attacks seem to always get through and hurt, like Ruby's training with Oscar/Ozpin, or JNPR vs BRNZ, while cutting and stabbing attacks need to be blocked with an active aura shield, like Ren vs the King Taijitu or Ruby during the fight with Tyrian.  And if there is a large enough difference you can get through the Aura and still land your strike, like Adam cutting Yang's arm or Pyrrha sending Penny's swords back at her.

Yep honestly feel like Ghira is gonna die. So two things are gonna happen.

    1. Dad And/Or Mom dies Sun and Blake get beat up and Blake gets shipped to Mistral.

    2. Dad and/or Mom die Sun and Blake beat the crap out of the intruders and the two head to Mistral to help Blake get classic revenge.

I'm honestly gonna go with two.

Edit : Sadly either way Ghira is going to die. :( i'm not sure why he needs to but he is going to.

    • falore91

Ghira may die so that, storywise, Blake is empowered to assume his mantle as a true champion of all people and defender of the Faunus. Even though she won’t inherit his political position, the assassination of what I suspect was a generally beloved chieftain and icon of recent Faunus history, paired with an inability to wipe out the entire family, will push many citizens out of fearfulness / nativism that let them sympathize with Adam’s White Fang.

    • Mimic56

Because CRWBY has demonstrated that they don't mind sending us down emotional roller coasters and making us tear up/ball our eyes out......I have to assume that both of them will die.  One of them will throw their life for the other who will die shortly afterward.  When in a fit of rage you aren't thinking as well as you would otherwise.  Sun is probably safe though and so is Illia.

I hope to see some LGBT characters on the good side of things.  I'm not usually a shipper, but I'm kinda hoping Ladybug becomes a thing, or at least one of RWBY is a lesbian.

    • seraph56

      It's definitely Yang.

    • Minenime4theWIN

Yang being a lesbian would be like: "Oh, she's the tough girl so she must be gay." also "she's got mommy issues so she likes girls". I honestly don't feel like anyone in team RWBY is going to get in a relationship with anyone or show romantic feelings for anyone soon, they have too much fighting to do and there has been no character developement in that direction, I think we've got team JNPR for that. That being said, Bumblebee does have a song and they do have strong feelings towards each other, but if it happens I think it will take ages to. Right now the only ship that looks plausible is Renora.

    • Ninja_tude

      Couple points to this thread.
While Bumblebee may have a song, that comes from Jeff and isn't really to be considered "canon"

As for RWBY and their sexuality, its unlikely any of them are lesbians, though that doesn't mean they are heterosexual either. Ruby herself is the only one who hasn't shown any romantic flags towards anyone
      Weiss: Neptune
      Blake: Adam and Sun*
Yang: every shirtless guy at orientation lol

    • SylestalPyre

Weiss, sure. Blake, definitely Adam at one point, I still feel like Sun is up in the air. Yang? I feel like that's just her with everyone. She did wink at Blake, she did check out guys, she must've definitely at one point went around teasing every guy/lesbian at Beacon with hormones n stuff, because she's Yang.

  • n3rt3195

upon my second watching of the video, I realized something. With how much Weiss talked (quite accurately I might add) about Blake and her walls and not letting people in etc., it was pretty cool seeing the contrast in her character “now” (which I think is a month or two behind the RWYJNROQ timeline) where she invited Sun into her life with the meeting with Ilya. It shows a lot of development for her in a subtle way, and we can attribute that to sun himself because he’s the only friend she’s had around during this growing period (she retreated after beacon, showing that she was trying to put her walls back up). The episode even kinda goes out of its way to fake us out by acting like she was still the old Blake and that she was going to hide the meeting from him. She’s learning from Sun that she doesn’t have to be and do everything alone, and that she can be more effective with the help of her friends, which has been the main theme of her arc since she ran away.

I’m also happy with how they’re starting to show Yang’s softer side with her abandonment issues, although I feel like she should’ve harbored some feelings towards Ruby for leaving too, but that’s just nitpicking.

Also, Ghira going berserk mode makes me very excited.

Why should she harbor feelings toward Ruby for leaving? She let Yang know she was leaving (as Rubys letter last volume pointed out) and, as she said in Chapter 4 to Raven, Qrow promised Yang he'd look out for Ruby during her journey to Mistral. Raven, Summer Rose and Blake all left Yang without warning or without telling her why they were leaving or where they were going. That's the big difference and why she was looking for Ruby while she was on her motorcycle through Anima. Simple as that.

    Critique, Commeny, Predictions & SPOILERS

1st off... LOVED the Episode as usual. :)

    Critique & SPOILERS:

I usually have no issue with the storytelling, maybe little ugs here and there but nothing major however having the white fang in white fang gear plus Finick & his brother attack the Belladona house seems unwise  - I mean what if someone saw them entering or leaving then the bodies are discovered... If that happened they wouldn’t be able to cover it up and the feared backlash would be swift and complete.

PS. I’m just talking about not disguising themselves. I have no issue with who’s involved though I am a little surprised the Fox brothers are onsite... It seems out of character from their usual puppet master role.

    Comment & SPOILERS:

    FINALLY Blake’s dad in a fight... I can’t wait!!! :)

    Predictions & SPOILERS:

    1. Sadly Blake’s dad dies and maybe even sadder Ilya kills him and Blake witnesses it.

    2. I can’t decide if Ilya lives or dies & if she dies Blake kills her but I’m leaning towards her living and escaping. The Fox brothers certainly get killed by Blake’s dad though but he’s badly injured which is when Ilya kills him just as Blake & Sun arrive. Might be to cli chiche though so I’m likely wrong on at least parts of this prediction.

    3. Blake’s mom lives but if she dies I think we’ll see Sun become a LOT more serious and way less happy go lucky going forward.

    4. This spurs Faunus to join the fight and travel to Mistral.

    5. Adam goes even more bat shit crazy.

If this all happens I wonder how the Blake arc adapts...

    • chuxfhux

“Spoilers” infers you’ve already seen the episode, and unless you’re a time traveller into the future or work for the rooster team for the RWBY production. What you have under spoilers is merely commentary opinion.

    • cj_hope

Alright, it is explicitely said in the episode ''Necessary Sacrifice'', that the White Fang doesn't care about other Faunus seeing that they are using violence. That they will kill anyone standing against them. They will use FEAR to get to their goal.

And also, most faunus just want to live peacefully, hence why it was so hard for Blake and Sun to recruit faunus. All of them want changes but none of them want to actually do anything since they just live in Menagerie for a peaceful life.

    • Jardex22

      1.  It's a possibility.

      2.  I'm not seeing any form of redemption for Ilia at this point.  More then likely, she'll walk Adam's path and meet the same fate.  Maybe there's a chance if a Human shows her kindness, or she witnesses an act that showed not all Humans will turn a blind eye.

      3.  At this point, I'm wondering if Sun is considering returning to school.  He did attend Haven after all, so a reunion of SSSN could be in order.

      4.  I'm pretty sure either the attempted attack alone could prompt the Faunus to action.  Hopefully we don't need a martyr on top of that.

      5.  This is pretty much guaranteed.  It makes me wonder how far off the edge he'll go before the Fox brothers abandon him.

fear doesn't snuf it out, quite the opposite actually it ignites it, how does she not see how hypocritical the white fang are. they literally fear the humans and what they can do whether they admit it or not and that causes them to hate the humans. and what the are doing will not end in a good way for either side. my prediction for the future of the white fang is that it will destroy itself from the inside, slowly as people start to hate their leaders because they try to instil fear into their subordinates which will lead to an uprising and eventually the disbanding of the white fang.

Honestly, DragonTurtle2 is right. Only hench and regular grimm used to go down with weak blows, as they were generic characters who probably didn't use aura. Now, it feels like they're downplaying any combat that's not a big fight, as even characters with developed abilities, including Blake herself, went down to one hit. It would have made more sense if she did not struggle gettig up, but got immediatly wrapped by Trifa.

    • Omegafire18

In all fairness to Blake's example, she deliberately walked into that trap knowing she'd be ambushed (see how she called for Sun deliberately at the end). So likely, she was merely playing along as if that blow had really hurt her

If you watch Blake after see finds the note, it seems like she knows that Ilia is still there watching her, and that is why she told Sun she would meet up later just to tell him about the meeting once they were out of ear shot. You can even hear the rustle of leaves once Blake walks away from the edge of the balcony.

    Fear snuffs out hate? WRONG

    I prefer the Yoda philosophy.

    Fear leads to Anger.

    Anger leads to Hate.

    Hate leads to Suffering.

Technically it does, but not in the way you think, all it does is stop people showing it outwardly.  If you fear repercussions for your hatred then you're not going to be open about it.

When they first mentioned Blake, I thought Yang might crack her cup, or something along those lines.  I suppose it's for the best that the show can convey emotions without obvious actions like that.  But I REALLY don't want Yang to forgive Blake overly quickly.  Even if she does bring herself to embrace Blake and fight alongside her, the pain should still be there.

No doubt that people are going call Ilia's reveal unnecessary 'pandering' or something cynical.  I'm going to give the benefit of the doubt to critics and say they AREN'T homophobes, just that they're cynical about inclusion, or making romance prominent in general.  The way the romantic angle was worked in also felt organic and relevant.  Ilia is hurt that Blake didn't acknowledge her romantic intentions.  But that's also tied to how she feels betrayed that Blake didn't see her dedication to the cause, and openness to extremism in the first place.  Ilia actually becomes indignant at how Blake didn't reach this conclusion sooner.  This was something really hard to pull off; normally, when a villain acts indignant, it's just because someone is stepping on their ego, either by insulting them or just denying their goal.  This happens even when creators are trying to portray villains as morally gray or relatable, but can't stop creating scenes with villainous cliches.  But Rooster Teeth managed to execute it here!  Ilia's desire for someone who sees her for all her qualities AND faults also feels very poignant for a Faunus with the traits of one of the greatest camouflagers in the world.

I've also seen some people take this as a sign that Blake is bisexual.   Ilia had romantic feelings towards Blake, but where were the signs that Blake had felt feelings towards Ilia?  Blake does look sorrowful about the revelation, but I didn't interpret that as someone who can feel romantic attraction for a woman (not that I wouldn't welcome that).  I interpreted it as Blake feeling remorse for not acknowledging how her comrade felt, and remorse for how that same comrade has abandoned affection for violence.  I'm not seeing evidence that Blake could have returned Ilia's feelings, but I'm not seeing evidence she COULDN'T either.  It just doesn't seem like the show was trying to confirm anything about whether Blake feels that way towards women, just that Ilia does, and she had hoped she could get a response from Blake.

Amongst all this focus on the romantic reveal, I'm worried we won't point out weaknesses in the full scope of the scene.
Ilia's lines felt very stilted at moments.  Particularly "You know what snuffs out hate?  Fear."  It doesn't sound at all like an angry young woman being torn apart by her conscience, being guilt-tripped by her ex-crush, or raging against a world that doesn't care about right and wrong.

Also, shouldn't Weiss's dress smell absolutely RANK by now?

It's also possible the Illia was just jealous of the way Blake looks up to Adam as a leader, and wished that she got the same amount of attention as Blake gave to Adam. You could see after how commanding she was with the other White Fang so it's possible she wishes that she was able to have more power and people that recognised said power.

Or this theory is wrong, and there is a hidden romantic interest that Illia holds for Blake.

Illia is not all that well written, honestly. About 90% of her character is the cliche "leave this place, or else I will have no choice but to kill you" which gets quite insufferable at times, while 5% is following direct orders, 4% is the "I must do whatever it takes to accompish this ominous goal" cliche, and 1% is a incredibly forced "I'm gay" to justify such cliches. She's one of the worst characters in this show, as even Mercury and Emerald, who barely had any screen time other than doing evil stuff, had more developement for their motives.

P.S. Stop copy pasting part your comment everywhere without editing in the slightest, especially when it's irrelevent as a reply.

@DragonTurtle2 They have NOT forgotten how Aura works. It's not a 24 armor that's put up at all times. It needs a conscious focus. You can still get blindsided with attacks you don't see coming and get knocked out or killed. As TVtropes.org explains:

      • One common fanon interpretation of Aura is that it is a form of 24-Hour Armor: a shield that is always on and will deflect incoming attacks. This actually goes against how it is depicted in the show, where characters are frequently dealt knockout or even lethal blows by attacks that come abruptly or without warning, such as Coco getting knocked out by Emerald in their battle in the Vytal Festival or Yang's injury from Adam's sudden sword strike at the end of Volume 3. Ren clarifies in Volume 5 that it takes a conscious effort to use Aura for protection; with enough training, it can eventually become second nature.

So of course the only confirmed LGBT character in the series sets out on a revenge murder spree. Are you kidding me Rooster Teeth? Do you really want to add to that old trope of the only gay representation being jilted lovers becoming sadistic murderers???

    • meta72

It's a trope for a reason. Why not just appreciate the story and the art and the rest of the work that goes into this show?

    • Omegafire18

Any old cliche is also a trope, and yet some of those are used well.

^Just because one LGBT person goes on such a rampage doesn't automatically mean that all such people are like that. Just that this particular example is thus far

I don't see it that way, but more like a person who was heart broken for someone who didn't return the same feelings for them; eventually, driven to madness and jealousy. But...I can see what you mean by that, they only gay that was revealed so far turned into some sadistic murderer. Also, don't clump one person into a whole community. It's not like one bad apple, will end up defining all.

It really doesn't matter that she's lesbian, that is not relevant to the story. Ilia could've just as easily been a guy, and the story would not have had to change at all. Please stop expecting creators to treat LGBT characters any different from straight characters, it's bad for the creative industries we love so much, and can make our favourite studios feel strangled by their own communities.

I don't see how we could call her a "sadist."  She she doesn't take pleasure in causing pain like Cinder, Neo, Tyrian, Mercury, Emerald, or any other character working under Salem (Hazel being the exception so far).

And then the shit hits the fan!

I really think that only Weiss could have that talk with Yang.

I don't have much more to add there so off to Blake. I think things are even worse for Ilia than I thought if 'that' was revealed. I'm sorry, but she from the get-go had no problem hurting people and didn't hide her hate towards humans... so the very fact that she had room in her heart to love is somewhat impressive. I rather feel it was only because she was close friends with Blake that that was even a thing, but Adam aside, how could she feel the two would ever work out? Yes, both were in the White Fang and she says she doesn't like hurting people, but she didn't have to break her human friends teeth for laughing at what happened to her parents, she could have left. With just her statement, it doesn't matter if a human strikes a faunus or lives beside them, so long as there is a single human who doesn't like them, all are responsible. Now, contrast that with Blake who only wants her people to be seen eye to eye with humans instead of like their trash. If the two got together, they wouldn't last long with such conflicting ideals and would eventually end up at each others throats for it. Now, back to the present, my last prediction seems even worse than before. If she does break Blake's heart, she will break herself as well...Vegetable or Machine now seem like the only two outcomes if this works. If this attack fails, I suspect she's going to run away...now that I think about it, its probably the third option here. Whether Blake's parents live or die, I doubt her own parents won't come to mind, making her realize she's because just as bad as the humans she detest so much. The problem with her zealous attitude, its a double-edge sword, she might leave altogether realizing she's basically become a human (in her mind)...or worse...
