This post came across my tumblr feed. I think she talks sense, and it gives me more hope. Link at the end.
"i see a lot of y’all trippin over bumbleby today (this isn’t a vaguepost, a lot of my dash is talking about it, and i know it’s a constant worry in this fandom anyway) so i’m just gonna take a moment to hopefully ease all ur fears
we (the lgbtq) community have been burned before in terms of representation, and i get the hesitation, the constant devil’s advocate we play with ourselves against onslaughts of evidence for bumbleby just in case we get burned again. but recently, miles & kerry in the reddit ama talked about pilot boi and how they were going to make him gay but didn’t because after receiving feedback form various crew members, they realized they would’ve been playing into extremely harmful tropes. now, this tells us:
- they’re aware of these harmful tropes, and i think we can also safely assume they’re aware of queerbaiting, as it’s been an issue since bumbleby started toeing that line anyway (so, for literally years)
- they listen to feedback on issues they don’t have personal experience with and adjust accordingly
- they aren’t stupid, and they certainly aren’t attempting to actively hurt major parts of their fanbase, especially when their representation has real-life implications for an already marginalized, abused, & targeted community
so my point of view - and i’ve always believed this, as rooster teeth itself is an extremely socially-driven, community-based company anyway - is that if miles & kerry are this cautious with even casual representation, they’re going to be even more aware of what they do with popular ships like bumbleby. i fully believe they would’ve shut it down at some point in the past if it were absolutely not happening, but instead, all they’ve done is deliberately fuel the fire. regardless of what you ship, the bumbleby fandom is mostly comprised of queer women who are recognizing themselves in this ship/these characters, we’re relating to it on a level we understand, and rather than their moments being “toned down” (as i’d expect from rooster teeth if they’d realized they were accidentally queerbaiting us), we’re getting more blatant ones - yang and weiss’s conversation, blake only saying yang’s name, yang’s look. crwby isn’t stupid, they’re not oblivious, and more importantly, they aren’t cruel. they know what they’re doing because they’re rooted in community, everyone around them is giving them constant feedback. i think we need to step back and look at the entire process they go through and trust in that."
