Halo is coming out with a movie. So far I know that Samuel Jackson is gonna be Johnson, and that Ridley Scott ( director from Alien ) will direct. Now, everydody loves Halo but will this movie actually be worth somethin?
as any movie derived from a video game starts out there is potential to be a blockbuster( hopefully bloodrayne) or a bust( house of the dead). hopefully necaseu of the games name and reputation it will atract an A list cast and they will do a great job with it but only time will tell. but i hope this is an eipc film that is more the 2.5 hours, and i hope they use teh same voices from the game for people whos faces will not be shown that way it isnt that odd, u know?
SLJ is the best...he can pull it off..any crappy roll he has will shine...and no offense this movie will bomb like non other....its just the way of the world...
Microsoft may finally be getting into a business where "blue screen of death" could actually be a good thing.
The company is going from writing code to writing a movie script adapting the "Halo" video-game franchise, according to a report yesterday in Daily Variety.
It's wrapping up a million-dollar deal to hire Alex Garland, the writer of the movie "28 Days Later" and the novel "The Beach," to bring "Halo" to the big screen, according to the report.
Variety said it confirmed the deal with Creative Artists Agency, which represents Microsoft and Garland in Hollywood. The agency hired Xbox co-creator Seamus Blackley in 2003 to represent video-game makers in Hollywood deals.
Microsoft would not comment on the matter yesterday, except to say that "Halo" is a hotly sought-after property in the entertainment world. It added that it has not made any official movie announcements.
"Halo 2" went on sale in November and became the second best-selling game in the United States last year, losing out only to the latest installment in the popular "Grand Theft Auto" video-game series. "Halo 2" has sold 6.4 million copies worldwide since its release, bringing the sales total for both "Halo" games to 12.8 million units. The original "Halo" went on sale in 2001.
According to Variety, Microsoft is planning to develop the script on its own and take it to movie studios only after it is complete. Such a move in Hollywood is unusual for a tech company, the report said.
Microsoft likely wants to make sure that the "Halo" brand isn't diluted, said Matt Rosoff, an analyst covering the company at Directions on Microsoft, a Kirkland-based independent research firm.
Alex Garland has reportedly been hired by Microsoft.
"This is one completely new piece of intellectual property that Microsoft owns, and because of that they want to make sure they have control over the image," he said. "They've created this valuable franchise and there aren't many of those out there."
To be sure, there is little else in Microsoft's product library that could similarly inspire Hollywood. "The Adventures of SharePoint Portal Server 2003," anyone? Anyone?
So far, there has been little public mention of what actors could star in the movie or what the plot could cover. The "Halo" story line involves the conflicts between humans intent on colonizing outer space and an army of alien species that wants to destroy mankind. The hero is a character named "Master Chief," a super-soldier leading the charge to protect Earth from the encroaching aliens.
Film adaptations of video games haven't been consistently successful at the box office. The film version of the "Final Fantasy" video-game series made only $11.4 million in its opening weekend in theaters. The film "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" opened in first place at the box office, however, and went on to clear the $100 million mark in ticket sales.
The movie "Resident Evil" bombed in 2002 but its sequel released last year hit the top of the charts. And "Super Mario Bros.," released in 1993, made only $21 million — less than half its production budget — in the United States.
wait woah woah woah, this type of movie would take so much preproduction, production and post production that it would take a good three to four years to make. has it really been filmed etc?
It is official, there is a story doing the rounds that Hollywood is preparing a movie about the world of Halo. If a rumor hierarchy did exist, this particular one would be on its way to college to start a 3-year course to become a rumor but considering the current buzz around anything Halo, we just had to report on it.
The story does go into some detail however and if any of the names associated with the movie are correct then the chemistry sounds perfect for the job. Which Halo fan would say no to having Ridley Scott, (Blade Runner, Alien), direct, Ed Harris appear as Captain Keyes and Samuel L. Jackson as Captain Johnson. It appears that Bungie has been in talks with Warner Brothers regarding a movie but has insisted that it will only consider handing over the movie rights if the original Alien director and writer are involved, something which may throttle the project since Ridley Scott is not very easy to get.
According to insider information, appearing on ain't-it-cool-news, Scott has, apparently, been offered the script, storyboards etc. before and passed on doing a Halo movie but that was all before Halo 2 started breaking all sorts of sales records.
The idea of Ridley Scott directing a Halo movie seems the perfect match of high-tech effects with a traditional tense directing style and the thought of large epic-scale battles from the game appearing on the big screen under Scott's direction is definitely pleasing. It will be however, extremely disappointing if the entire project fails to take off due to one person's refusal. There is no doubt that Ridley Scott is the perfect man for the job but there has to be some other director who can handle the project; possibly a European movie directed by Mike Leigh so that we can discover the social aspects of Master Chief's career and the personal journey he has to take in order to reconcile his differences with his ageing and sick father.
Since everything is at the speculation stage for the time being, we will leave you with one thought of a Halo movie directed by Ridley Scott in which tense Black Hawk Down battles are followed by claustrophobic psychological tension in the style of Alien and where breathtaking photography is accompanied by epic orchestrated vibrant music as Hans Zimmer usually creates. Not bad is it?
Who would you like to see directing and starring in a Halo movie, which game do you believe is better suited to provide the story for the first movie, please share your thoughts and ideas in the user comments section.
I just read the first one and it seems that Halo has some type of chance because all the other movies are either horrible or the video games weren't that good
I dont hate Halo or anything, but the movie will most likely suck, for one main reason. Almost everything cool will have to be CGI, and I have never seen a movie that was good, with CGI aliens running around squealing, like the grunts would(Predator as an example) THe tank would either be totally different from the game, or it would look gay, cuz face it, the Scorpion Tank is not cool enough to look good in a movie. You will most likely be being bothered during the whole movie by annoying little screw-ups with the CGI, either that or it will flat out look stupid, like The weird looking Predator with those giant Dreadlocks in AVP.
It either wont be much like the game, or it will suck, and you know I'm right.
