This year I´m an exchange student to Paraguay. I brought my frisbee with me but unfortunately it was stolen. My parents having heard this sent me 5 more frisbees. The kids here absolutely love it. Here frisbee is an unknown sport and you can´t even buy frisbees here.
Definitely the most fun sport I have ever played, I play in high school now and i'll be playing at whatever college i end up going to. My school has all year round ultimate; fall hat league, winter hat league, main spring season, a summer camp and then a few days in the summer where teams like NexGen have a camp.
I think it needed to happen and it's good for the growth of the sport, although that said I think it needs some work done before it really takes off - like good quality internet streaming for one. Although I might be a little biased in that my coach is one of the players. I do like that highlights are making it to ESPN top tens and that there are a lot of major news stations writing stories about it. Whether I like it or not, Brodie Smith is becoming the face of ultimate.
It's pretty cool alright, all the publicity Ultimate is getting. I don't like some of the rule changes though. That's awesome, who does he play for? I'd love to have some good quality streaming too. The one's that are up aren't great. I really don't like the popularity of Brodie Smith, but I guess media will get drawn to a particular player, and he's been kinda standing out with all the youtube videos and the like.
At first I didn't like the changes, and I'm still not entirely for them, but they are focusing on making professional ultimate a "spectator's sport" while originally ultimate is a player's sport; which somewhat makes some sense. My coach is Goose Helton for the Indianapolis AlleyCats. I've never liked Brodie Smith either but the reason ESPN is putting ultimate plays up is Brodie submits them and they know who he is and that his videos get a lot of views. However, they have starting taking highlights from other sources, like a recent Spinners highlight wasn't submitted by him but they are fairly few.
One of my old house mates was the Captain of the Reservoir Discs (my universities team) and too this day, 5 years after he joined, I still don't understand how this classes as a sport as apposed to a hobby...it's like playing catch with 9 other people, five of whom you're not supposed to throw too
I have played it, for fun with the team, but it just doesn't interest me. There is no sense of sport, though i suppose the fact I play rugby union I might be a bit biased
Playing competitively will give you the same sense of sport any other sport would. It's the same thing as before - if you just mess around for fun with some friends in rugby then it isn't the same as actually playing in tournaments and such.
Well, I'm biased too, but I just came back from my Mixed All-Irelands and I haven't felt like I've had a more competitive tournament, including my 8 years of club basketball! Very competitive, great sport!
So have I, I've been watching a few of our school's alumni playing in college nationals. Indianapolis had a rocky start from what I saw but now I guess they are the top team in the Western Division and Goose, from the few games I streamed seems to be doing pretty well in it. He's a good coach for being so god damn busy - playing in the AUDL, coaching us, and still working full time.
What a dude! Fair play to him! I didn't ask, but what's the name of your own club? Mine is Rebel Ultimate. We got an unreal surprise just before the weekend, Sky'd Magazine did an article on us as we get closer to Windmill Windup.
What did you think of the Open final of the college nationals?
Our club is Nightmare Ultimate and that's awesome, I just read it and your team seems pretty good even though I've never seen international teams play. Skyd has done an article on our rivalry with another school but that's the only one I know of.
For the open final I would have liked to see Wisconsin win really only because Ben Rehmann on the Hodags started our club, but they really shouldn't have been so huck heavy the entire game and that's why I think they lost. Pitt had a fair few themselves but most of their points were just short passes all the way up the field.
I can say i've been on 4 intramural teams at 2 different schools. 3 out of the 4 teams were champions! Never did play against other schools... Would have loved to try out if I went to a big school, but I ended up doing XC and Track & Feild at a smaller school. One of the greatest games ever!!
