Contradictions between books and games [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ]

I've seen on several threads people questioning apparent contradictions between the Halo games and the Halo books.

To clear this up:

On any contradiction or difference, the Halo games are considered "canon." Why did X happen in the books when Y happened in the games? Solution: X never happened, and Y is considered "fact."

The reason for this is that although Bungie authorized the novels, they did not create them. The novels are the creation of authors unaffiliated with Bungie. Their works, although interesting in their own right, have to be considered outside of the Halo universe whenever they differ with the games.

there is nothing in the game game that majorly goes against the books, just the fact that MC isnt the only spartan, but in halo 1, no one knew there were spartans left, so that doesnt count, and no where in halo 2 does he say he was the only 1 left, the box says its down to 1 man, and even then details about him in the book dont say hes the only 1 left, the only real differances are the missions, and of course, no one wants to read a book saying everything u do in all the middles, other than that, theres no really contradictions

Yeah, when you start pointing out these differences you let me know. The writers for the novels were involved in the story process of the games to add to it. They weren't writing damn fan-fics. The novels are directly tied to the games in such a way that they compliment each other.

Some contradictions I've noticed on other threads:

In one of the books (Fall of Reach?), the humans find the Unyielding Heirophant and destroy it before it can lead an armada to Earth (its purpose was to eliminate humanity). This DIRECTLY contradicts Cortana, who says in-game "They didn't expect us to be here... not us, but humanity."

In the books, the MC's can see in darkness due to genetic/mechanical additions to their eyes. In-game, this is not so.

And so on.

I've noticed tons of instances when people have said, "Well, in the book..." before they outline an apparent contradiction between game and novel. Just because I can't remember more specific examples (I haven't read the books) doesn't mean they aren't there.

Consider this me "letting you know."

first, that was the book "first strike" the 3rd book. fall of reach was the first
in the game, regret(the prophet) took his little fleet to earth early, they had a full attack force planned, but regret didnt want to wait, he didnt think there were humans on earth, in the end of the game, the full attack force is attacking earth, and earth is fighting hard, and without help, wont survive.
there is nothing that is different from the books and the games, closest u come in "the Flood" and halo 1, in the maw, when u get on the elevator to the warthog bay, in the game its an elite and some grunts, in the book, its elite, grunts and a sentory gun, but apart from that, and other things like that, theres nothing, halo 2 doesnt have anything to say that first strike didnt happen, if u think u can find something that did contradict the other, tell us, i would love to see it

Your points don't seem solid. First no where in the novels does it come out and say the Covanent know the humans are on Earth. They are planning on going to Earth but not specifically because they are expecting to run into humans. Hence the suprise of finding humans there in Halo 2. It's quite possible that in 2 they fail to realize that it is humanity's home planet and not just another human stronghold.

And the improvements to their night vision...who's to say his night vision isn't good in the game? No mater how good you make an eye it can't function in total darkness. With the exception of a single hallway I never had to run on his headlights in Halo2.

there were 5 i think, john, linda, will, fred and kelly, they were the only surviving spartans that became full spartans(any that were put out of action in battle, werent able to fight after the changes to there body dont count)

and nothing says they didnt know that humans were on earth, they just didnt expect so many

ok they had a huge force to go and attack earth and then after that is blown up they just send in a little wimpy squad with a few ships no i think they messed that up they should have known or mabye truth didnt let regret know that there were humans on earth so he would die or something but the covenant mst know that the earth has an important forerunner relic on it because they didnt glass it over like they usually do

they destory all forces and then glass the planet, they didnt destory the ships around earth, so they wouldnt try to glass it yet, and u could be right, truth doesnt seem nice, so he could of told regret that very few humans were on earth so he would die, i mean, he just let the other 1 die, he even told the brute NOT to save him, THE TRUTH IS, TRUTH IS EVIL

Im not so sure you can say that as a contradiction. Earth is the location of the Ark so maybe the Prophet of Regret just wanted to show up in style or just heavily protected. When the fleet got destroyed he probably just said the hell with it and took the 14 you see in Halo 2. Just because they were massing a large fleet to go to Earth doesn't mean they knew there were humans there, they probably just wanted a huge escort.

as i see it truth is nothing but a power hungry tyrant.and he sent the order to kill the arbiter and what some of u guys have been saying that truth lied to regret so chief would kill him.and he left mercy to die by the tentacles of the flood. plus hes a coward he has to stand behind his brutes. look at regret he didnt go down with out a fight. back to mercy the little infectous forms that had attacked him one of the brutes could have easily taken it off of him and he could have survived. this just proves that truth is nothing but a power hungry tyrant. and if my guess is right hes just as stupid as the flood are cause event the elites know that halo will kill them.

My problem with the novels is that they get chessy. Like quote "Master Chief slammed a fresh clip into his assult rifle". Honestly they emphasis too much. And the quote above they overuse.

It's actually a code for "John took a dump." Everytime you read that "Master Chief slammed a fresh clip into his assult rifle" it means that John had to get something out...and it's usually right after he killed something so I imagine he's taking a dump on someone.

many lil things happen in the novels such as a deeper storyline involving some time warp crystals that seem to be the center of focus for Truth and seem to be driving the story more than any invasion or ark.

So you're arguing that MC never, ever uses his full abilities, throughout the entirety of Halos one and two?

I was under the impression that Capt. Keyes had no children? Where in the hell did Miranda Keyes come from? Did I miss a long topic/Plot Twist/Bungie Being Lazy?
