Please read this before posting, it has everything you can think of.
Due to the incredible amount of newcomers to this thread the senior members of this thread have decided to make a guide for the complex strategy-based side of the competitive game. Do not post in here saying "Hay I got a lvl 78 charizard" as you will be dealt with by removal. This is an advanced group for discussion of strategy of the current Pokemon metagame, or sometimes memories of the older games. Decent grammar and spelling is required to post here.
Once you have read this then you may proceed to asking legitimate questions.
This guide is mostly links to popular websites, take the time to read everything carefully.
*Serebii Pokedex - Used to find info on any pokemon. You may search them by type, name, or top stats. Example: Beneath the type boxes are links for what 100 Pokemon have the highest of that stat. This site can tell you everything about a pokemon from what level it evolves to how many steps it takes to hatch and even how moves can be learned by breeding.
*GameFAQ's EV training intro and guide - This is a useful and informative guide to EV, or Effort Value, training and what EVs are. This is a good read and you will learn a lot about how to train your Pokemon appropriately. This also tells you where to train the Pokes and how.
*TheCarious(EV training spots) - This is an EV training guide video for attack. TheCarious, also known as Disfunction, is a competent and experienced battler. In case you find the GameFAQ's guide too long and/or already understand the basics of training then you can look for all the hot spots here on his profile.
*IV Breeding Guide - Another guide to how to get the appropriate baby Pokes so that when you do EV train you get the right natures and decent IVs, or Individual Values, which is what is explained here.
*Marriland Team Builder - A simple tool that allows you create a team and notice general weaknesses. Note that this should not be solely relied upon, as some moves are much more common than others, and a weakness to weakness to psychic will not be as debilitating as a weakness to ground or fighting.
*Team Building Guide - This fully explains roles of pokemon and how to put together a good team for competitive WiFi battles.
* Offensive Threat List - Pretty self explanatory, a list of pokemon which can cause physical or special mayhem. This could be used to help make teams once you understand the roles of each poke as mentioned in the Team Building Guide.
*Defensive Threat List - Once again, use this to find pokes to cover the roles of walls on your team.
*Pokemon Movesets/ Tier List - These are movesets for every pokemon and are generally a decent idea to where you should go. It provides reasoning and details on why the moveset is suited for the poke. Also can be used to see what Tier the poke belongs to.(Tiers are often argued so be aware when battling to what tier list your opponent agrees to.)
*Battling Clauses - Optional rules some, if not most, people follow. Some opponents like more clauses than others, just be aware of which ones are on before you battle.
After reading through the previous articles, these links might be useful if you decide to break through into the competitive battling scene.
*Damage Calculator - Used to determine how much damage one Pokemon's attack will do to another. Good for seeing how many EVs are required to KO certain Pokemon, or see how much punishment a defensive Pokemon can take.
*Attack Type Analyzer - Allows you to easily see what Pokemon will resist certain combinations of moves.
The current veterans of this thread (as of June 2008) are:
i thought it was freaking sweet when i was in like 5th grade! i had like althere olde games for the color! vey entertaining role playing game even now!
I still play Sapphire from time to time. The game, itself, is great. The show ruins what little reputation it ever had.
I just wish they wouldn't cater the newer games to the audience the show is aimed at. The originals (Red/Blue) weren't aimed for little kids, which made them quite enjoyable. But ever since Ruby/Sapphire came out, they've seemed really kiddy. Especially in the dialog.
But, it's still fun to play. Tons of secrets to find, and to find them all usually takes a LOT of time.
yeah the show sux. i think it's not aimed specifically at LITTLE KIDS. a better inference is that it's aimed at both sexes now with the additions of pokemon sexes, choice of female trainer, and contests.
I was in high school when the craze got huge. I played a little of the card game and watched the anime religiously. I'm still a fairly decent-ly big fan of it though I've never played the games.
Of course I say this while sitting here in pikachu slippers.. so...yeah.
I loved it when I was in 5th grade. I remember my friend's mom went to japan and bought him some toys that you couldn't get in America. I'd still play it, but I am waiting for a Pokemon MMORPG. The franchise is perfect for one, and Nintendo just kind of avoids it.
It would be cool if there was a game where you would play as the pokemon, and the trainer would follow you around. (or maybe no trainer at all) And if you could still level up, but the battles wouldn't be turn-based (as in, you press different buttons for different attacks, but you can control where you attack, dodge moves manually, and move yourself around on a field). Playing as pokemon in SSBM was cool.

well although that is a little wierd it is a decent idea. i was obsessed with the pokemon thing in 5 th grade 2 but i must say the original pokemon games for color were good games. although that was back then now if i see somthing with pokemon in it i'm confused out of my mind. my little brother is now getting into it and hes using all my old cards. he was watching it and i walked in and said 2 myself "wtf have they done with the series" i doni't even know wat any of the freaking pokemon are anymore.
i've been saying that for years. the only good thing abt gold and silver was that u could go back to the original cities towards the end. the original cities in the red and blue games.
When Red and Blue came out back a few years ago, everybody went CRAZY. Even today, I still appreciate the games because of the fact they were so different. They were a brilliant change to the old RPG formula and addictive as hell too.
I don't get why they had to release so many versions. A special edition is fine, but requiring you to get multiple versions if you don't want to trade was a bit much. I guess they were just trying to encourage getting the link cables.
The oringinal Pokemon were always my personal favorite. After they started coming out with new ones I started to lose interest about it. When Nintendo came up with FireRed and LeafGreen I (yes I know, it's sad) started to play again and got hooked back into it. I had forgot how addiciting those games can be.
I always thought a Pokemon MMORPG would be an excellent idea too.
Now, back in the day, I had Pokemon Red. I was like 12 or 13 and the whole craze hadn't caught on yet, I just knew it was some hyped-up Japan-dominating new thing from Nintendo, so I checked it out and it was a damn fun RPG.
However, since I played Red to death, every Pokemon RPG since has just been a boring exercise, and I can't give any main series Pokemon game much credit since the original red and blue.
But, as for the Puzzle games... they ARE GOD.
Pokemon Puzzle League for N64... Pokemon Puzzle Challenge for GBColor... both phenomenally addictive and incredible, among my favorite games for both systems and NOW...
Pokemon Trozei for DS.
I played it for about 5 minutes today, and now I MUST own it. Another fine addition to the Pokemon Puzzle Family, and a new game to suck hours from my life!
I liked the first season show, and I own Red, Fire Red and now Emerald for my GBA. The thing that ticks me off the most is all these new stupid Pokemon, they've lost all originality and so have some of the people's names. I mean Brock, for a rock gym leader? Mr. Briney for a sea captian? Come on, can't they come up with anything better?
Still, I love to watch re-runs of the old show and I'm still played Emerald (since I beat the other two, which were bascially the same, unfortunately, other than the fact that I can finally be a GIRL.)
ahhhhhhhhh........brings back memories*sniffle*.lol i have most of the gba games(my guilty pleasure), they were swe-e-e-e-et; as for the show, no way man!
the reason i liked emerald is because you could get kygure, groudon, and rayquaza(wow i think i actually spelled those right) without having to, somehow persuade someone into trading them with you.
a: the show sucks, well it does now b: the game is very addictive, i have been hooked since kindergarten c:i wish they could make a mmo pokemon, it would be awesome
