Gnarls Barkley is a musical collaboration between producer Danger Mouse and rapper/singer Cee-Lo.
If you haven't seen them perform or heard their music, you should. They're just amazing.
The lead singer Cee-Lo is amazing. His vocal abilities are astounding. And the music is just so...just...amazing. Its a wonderful blend of styles; from R&B to Blues to Soul, Gospel, and even Electronica.
I first saw them perform on the MTV Movie awards and I was amazed. After they were done I hit iTunes immediately and downloaded their album. Usually when I buy/download a new album I like most of it, save for a few songs...but with this one I loved every song. Its just amazing.
I heard the single "crazy" a couple weeks ago and loved it, from there I have purchased the cd and loved all the songs on it. Definitely a worthy purchase
The tracks are tight, but virtually every single time that I see them live, they come off flat as all hell. Virtually no groove or stage presence. But yeah, the tracks are tight.
Just an eludication about GB and their penchant for dressing up as film characters:
It's part of their aesthetic. That's all. They do it because it's fun, and quite frankly, it is. They've appeared in photos as Wayne & Garth, characters from A Clockwork Orange, Star Wars, and several others. There's no underlying meaning or anything like that. Gnarls Barkley is all about silliness and abject enjoyment of doing what you do.
Incidentally, if you all like GB, I'd suggest checking out Cee-Lo's solo albums, especially "Cee-Lo Green Is The Soul Machine."
I've only heard the single "Crazy" so really I couldn't make too much of an opinion. I like the single, different, and whats strange is that I usually don't like R&B. I'm just amazing by his vocals.
I'm hooked on the single Crazy. I don't usually listen to anything but British and Indie rock, but I'm definitely thinking about getting St. Elsewhere.
No news, and chances are there won't be a follow-up. These hip-hop collabs tend to be once-off albums, followed sometimes by unreleased EP's or remix albums. I wouldn't suggest holding your breath for another GB album. Go get Cee-Lo's solo albums, instead.
Just saw these guys for the first time on SNL, though I think I've heard "Crazy" here and there previously... They really are amazing! Pretty unique too.
Also, Cee-Lo looks like Little Richard. Or I guess he was trying to dress like him or something...
