Teacher Loses Job Over Art [ 1 ] [ 2 ]

From here.

Basically, a teacher in Dallas took her fifth grade class to the Dallas Museum of Art, a field trip approved by the principal. Eighty-nine students were accompanied by four other teachers, at least twelve parents, and a museum docent. Some students saw incidental nudity in greek statues and other nude art. One student's parents complained, and the teacher was immediately suspended without pay and barred from working in other schools.

What a world we live in.

That is just plain fucking (sorry for the valgarity) stupid. All art museums, at least most have some form of nude art. I see more nudity on TV outside my house and even sometimes in school. I learned about the birds and the bees when I was 6, not saying that at that age most can understand. Than I was re-taught in grade three. I saw a baby getting born in the third grade, even saw the plasenta come out. Also it is art! (in a museum)

Where do these people live? In the most sheltered place in Dallas?

EDIT:
Sorry it came out so unorganized.

What the hell? It was APPROVED by the school principal. If it was going to be a problem, you'd think he would have not approved the trip. Not only is the idea of suspending anyone ridiculous, if anyone absolutely had to be suspended, why not the principal?

Tsk. The ignorance of people astounds me.

Just another example of why our school system/ parental system/ society is failing as a whole.

Everybody wants to push blame, everybody is more concerned with covering their own ass than actually doing what's best for the children. It disgusts me to see how little character people actually have.

I think some parents forget that in their natural state everyone is naked: that it isn't evil, sick, or twisted to be as such. Maybe if the people depicted were engaged in sex there might be something to complain about.

*Shakes head* That's just ridiculous! Why didn't all 5 teachers get suspended?

That really makes me mad because it's hard to keep the arts (in any form!) in the schools these days! How are kids supposed to be exposed to music, theatre, art etc. if this keeps up?

How dare you show our children something that represents far more than just a penis! For shame! Our children are too young to handle this display of nudity historic artwork that we, as parents, cannot comprehend!

Wow...that is completely stupid. I think the parents who signed the children to go on the field trip should've realized the type of art their children would see. *Sigh* What a world we live in.

A bit of shock and awe came over me when I saw that you were the person to make a thread about this.

For two days, all I've been doing is cursing the young boy who might just be special.

In regard to the abstract...it was art.

Jesus....it was a abstract statuette...looked like a copper-esque thing.
I don't know what that says to you....but I've seen it. They showed the thing that the boy reported on television....

If the kid doesn't get shot, his parents should at least.

..........................wow. This is absolutely ridiculous. If a teacher can't even take kids to an art museum, the world is becoming a much worse place to live in.

The principal should take responsiblity for the situation.

Society's views on nudity is so silly. Next thing they'll do is ban the word "sex"

Probably a new teacher. Its not her fault, though.
Everyone on here talks like it is every other stupid American ASIDE from themselves though.

I was planning on raising a big fuss about a movie that the whole school had to see about what happens when someone drives drunk. There was stuff in there that i didn't want to see, and that we should at least have been warned about.
I just figured that it did have an effect though, and why make a fuss about something i'd get over anyway?

I guarantee 70 % of parents who saw that would have been offended.

When you think about it though, its not even the parent's fault, its the "expletive" School board's.
They were the ones who fired the teacher, over something that could have easily been handled differently.

First of all, the reason as to why art programs are being slaughtered like cows in some places (albeit, I'm very surprised this happened in texas, their music programs are probably the best in the state at the highschool level, and Rice Univ. is utterly amazing) is because all people are starting to care about are test scores. People believe that we aren't keeping up with other countries, and want to improve our test scores to give us all a sense of "keeping up". Hence, this is why acts such as NCLB (which is unconstitutional btw) are passed, attempts are being made to improve education. Honestly, what they do in ocnutries like Germany is take only the smarter children to the higher leves of education. Anyway...I went off on a tanget, the thing is that public opinion says that in order to improve test scores, children need more math/ sciences, and less arts/humanities. The reasoning is that maths/sciences are more helpful than knowledge about history, literature works, etc. in today's society (which is completely untrue btw), thus leading us down a road that is less oriented towards art. Some people even take this too far, and in places like Boise, the graduating class of 2012's Math/science requirments are 4 years of science (3 of lab sciences), 4 years of math, and history requirnments are down to 2 years of history. Okay, seiorusly, back to the topic at hand, it seems that either this principal really doesn't like art, or tehre is osmething else, because ti is ENTIRELY illogical to suspend this teacher on those grounds.

Sorry if this is poorly organized.

It is my opinion that we do spend too much time on it in highschools.

I can guarantee you that out of everyone loading their schedules with art classes at my school, none of them actually plan on a career in it, or particuly like it.

Myself, i am in Varsity choir.
But i still keep myself busy in Physics and precalc.

Are you kidding? Compared to sports and test scores, the arts are pretty low school agendas. They're usually the first thing to get cut.

That's quote the assumption to make. Art classes should be required for high school. It makes the brain work in different ways, encourages socialization and cooperation betweem students, and helps relieve stress from the normal workload.

I meant to say practically none. My bad. When i first wrote up the post, I had it right.

I know a couple of my friends who want to major in music when they get to college. I know one kid who wants to make artwork, and he's taking a design computer class.

Everyone else is just there for an easy grade.
I could understand a fun art class to express yourself, especially if you like it.

But there are so many kids who overload on them and end up unprepared. And from all of the alumni I've talked to, they act as if their whole highschool education was a waste, because they didn't learn anything.

They were in programs like art and gym the whole time.

We don't spend enough time on it in highschool, art help your brain work in a creative way that is almost essential in stuff like computer science (if you don't want to use goto's/switch/break statements which is sloppy programming, using those statements I mean). I personally love ceramics, band and jazz band, and so what if I don't plan on going into a carreer in it? It's about the fact that these classes teach you some of the most valuable things you will ever learn. Art helps so much in easing your mind, relaxing, and being creative (which helps immensly in problem solving). I'm in those classes, and I too am keeping myself busy with Calc III(differential equations next semester), AP computer science A/B, AP US/Comparative government, AP Macroeconomics, etc, but what does that have to do with anything? The skills I take from art help me in calc III(thinking outside the box), comp sci(you need to get creative with programming to make a program that takes derivatives lol), Government(art helps you see htings from multiple perspectives, which really helps with your essays). Yet again, does not matter if you're not going into something as a carreer, you take the skills you learn form those classes and they are aplicable to anything (aI mean all classes, not just art).

Marching band-Easy grade my ass
Ceramics-HARD class, I have to throw 5 fifteen pound cylindars, you try it.
Jazz band-playing bass trombone in a jazz band is far from easy.
Concert band-Making music is not an easy thing, making true music is an art that requires a load of work to pull off.
Painting/drawing-WAY not easy, you should see some of the ridiculous deadlines they have.
photo-ha, that class is so technical...yet again, not an easy grade.

You can't just judge art classes from your own experience. Everytime I took an art class in high school I had several peers who went on majoring in fields related to art.

You're. in. choir.

I don't know what Choir is like at your highschool, but at mine, that was the class everyone transferred into because they didn't like the elective they were in, and couldn't choose another. It was the ultimate throw-away class, much more so than art. I took Humanities in the 11th grade. On the first day we had a full class. On the second, we had eight students. The rest went to choir.

Don't equate art and gym. They are not the same. Not even close.
