9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which the very legacy of humanity is threatened. A group of sapient rag dolls, living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9 (Elijah Wood), who displays leadership qualities that may help them to survive.
The conflicted, but resilient group includes 1 (Christopher Plummer), a domineering war veteran; 2 (Martin Landau), an aged inventor; 5 (John C. Reilly), a stalwart mechanic; 6 (Crispin Glover), a visionary and artist; and 7 (Jennifer Connelly), a brave warrior.
There are at least several malevolent creatures up against this group; namely, the cat-skulled creature from the short film, a split-headed flying being that resembles both a bat and a manta ray in wing shape, and an insectoid creature with jointed legs and a pod-like body.
At first I didn't know about this movie. Then I saw it posted here in the forum, and the idea intrigued me. Then I saw the short film and the trailer, and now I'm excited. Can't wait for Sept. 9th :)
K well since no one is responding, I am to assume no one saw it but me. All bullshiting aside I thouroughly enjoyed the film. I thought the film lacked substance when I first saw it but I was told by a friend to see it a second time. 2nd time around I enjoyed it immensly. The movie was the appropieate length for it story depth. None of the characters were flat or given too much characterization either. You could tell from seeing this film that buton hasn't lost his touch and that is best personafied by some of the creatures in the film. The only problem I had was with the protag being voiced by elijah wood but that has more to do with my preference towards more heterosexual overtones. I had not problem with the "bromance" that 2 and 5 had going on but wood pushed it a little to far for me. At any rate I definetly want to own this movie. As far as favorite character mine would have to be the scientist only based on a non biased opinion. The character I adored was 7, this primarily due to my affinity towards action girls. I was even more enthralled when I found she lacked some of the typical traits of a action girl that can make them unbearible.
I really enjoyed it the first time I saw it. The action scenes are jaw dropping in their pacing and choreography. It is true the story is some what limited but that's what makes sci-fi good in my opinion. When you are introduced to a world that has so many questions but you are only given enough to understand this small corner of it. Can't wait to see it again on Blu Ray or possibly in a digital theater. Also can't wait to see Shane Acker's next project, that dude has amazing vision.
He does have exceptional visual instincts…Maybe someday someone will combine that with a screenplay that has a bit deeper of a plot and just overall better writing. I think you would have a winner.
I've heard a lot of people say that 9 was a complete and total waste of money. I disagree entirely. The movie was entertaining and well worth the money spent to go see it. It's one of the few animated movies rated PG-13, and delivers as such. It surprised me at first, but the monsters (or whatever you wish to call them) were incredibly alarming. I liked what Yoboss called a "Bromance" between 2 and 5--you rarely see that in a movie that isn't similar to I Love You, Man. The lack of overt intimacy but underlying feelings of love and respect between 7 and the other characters was pretty refreshing, too. Oh, and don't even get me started on the animation! It was amazing!
