I have a friend here at work who would like to turn his old (edge) iphone into an ipod touch. He's planning on giving it away to another friend so that will include a full wipe of the device. So far, I have found a lot of posts on the net saying how to do it with the v1.* software, many things I've found online for the V2.* software lack a decent walk-through and most of which entail people trying to keep their old apps. I've forwarded this to him to see if it helps but I'm curious if anyone here has done the same and what their method was for this purpose.

If the phone's deactivated, then isn't it already just a Touch with a Phone icon?

That's what I thought but he says all it does when he turns it on is ask to be activated. I don't like fixing things like this - I prefer to have it available to me so I can try different things.

Oh, guess that makes sense. You might try finding a copy of the Touch firmware and flashing it to the phone. I wouldn't think that the hardware would be different enough to cause major problems, and you can always restore the phone firmware if need be.

Firmware.

Instructions for firmware flashing.
