As most of my friends know, I'm a big comic book fan. The Goon written and illustrated by Eric Powell, a Dark Horse release, is in my top five favourite ongoing comic series I've ever read. A while ago I heard they were going into production on a animated version. I was a little weary of this, since the comic alternates between some extremely dark subject matter to slap stick comedy. I didn't know how they would turn it into a animated movie, and was very worried if they would water it down.

Then I heard who was one of the big names behind it. David Fincher.

So the fears of this being toned down have gone away. But what about keeping true to the source material?

Wait, Eric Powell is also working on this? Oh, cool, so it'll be respectful to the original source.

My last concern is, the comic has an extremely distinctive look. I hope they keep that.

Here's the teaser poster, and it gives you an idea what the comic looks like. (Drawn by Eric Powell.)

And here... here is what the film will look like. They've released two stills.

LOOK AT THAT. LOOK AT IT. It's bloody marvellous, I'm close to tears it's so beautiful. Frankie (the little dude) and the Goon (big dude... duh) look like they walked off the page. From the looks of this, it's going to knock Sin City off the "closest comic adaptation" pedestal. I love how the Goon turned out, but it's Frankie that impresses me the most. I cannot wait to see these two in motion.

By the way, for those of you who haven't read the comic, here's a basic rundown.

The Goon a extremely strong but fairly silent thug, and his extremely talkative sidekick Frankie, are two gangsters in a old depression era town. They protect the town from all sorts of monsters, but their biggest enemy is the Zombie Priest, the leader of the rival gang, and his endless army of zombies.

It's a great mix of comedy, horror, with a splash of mad scientist thrown in. I highly recommend the book series, and I cannot wait for this film.

For news on this upcoming film, watch this space.

News source.

No release date yet, and no actors either. (though I nominate either Steve Buscemi or Joe Pesci for Frankie)

Now all together now...

That looks pretty interesting!

Buscemi would be my first choice as well! I think he would be spot on for the role

When I read it Buscemi's voice was close to the one I gave Frankie in my head.

no idea who I'd pick for Goon.

I love The Goon and I can't wait for this. My suggestion for Goon would probably be Patrick Warburton just for his work on the Venture Brothers.

He's the first person that came to mind just from looking at the character. Weird that you mention him.

Never heard of it. Must look into it.

I've always wanted to start this series since I got a poster of it a few years ago, but never have. I hope the movie lives up to your expectations.

i'm a hellboy fan and in my readings have come across this series. Looks damn interesting to say the least and i have to say, one of the more visually faithful incarnations of a comic character that i've ever seen.

You being the Movie Forum Moderator, I thought of The Goonies when I saw the Thread's Title.

Sloth, a Goon, but a cool Goon.

Patrick Warburton for the Goon.

Also I nominate Steve Buscemi for every role of every movie. He's just that awesome.

It sounds like it should be called Roadhouse Blues, but that's a different song. With words.
