I'd never imagine Nintendo would fail me so hard. Especially with a Metroid game.
The narrative makes Samus into a whiny little girl who's AFRAID(??) of Ridley, what the hell?? Bitch has killed him what, four or five times at this point; shouldn't she just be psyched to broil him again? .
The story is basically Metroid Fusion with an Android Mother Brain instead of X-parasites .
The shooting/fighting is basically just mashing the shit outta the 2 button; the missile switching is sloppy; fighting the same enemies gets repetitive with the same finishing moves.
The environments are BORING. Not to mention the fact that there isn't a single REAL power-up hanging around... who cares about searching this metal bottle?
The bosses are few and unmemorable except for the Phantoon fight which did kick ass
The game itself just bored me to tears... save one or two dramatic sequences, the game was a chore, an exercise in mundane go-here, do-that inanity... all in order to trigger the subpar (albeit pretty) CG sequences for Metroid "fans."
I'm a Metroid fan. Outside of the on-site dialogue, none of that shit was necessary.
One thing though... Seriously? You're ripping on the action because it's "just mashing the 2 button"????? Umm... dude, you claim to be a Metroid fan and yet, THAT bothers you? That's ALWAYS been the action in Metroid. You have a button that shoots the gun. You press it, some times you press it very quickly, other times you hold it to charge then let go. It's always the same button though.
You can try to argue that the Prime series wasn't like this, which is true to a point except all the other "shoot" button did was shoot missiles, which really doesn't need a button of it's own.
But Metroid, Metroid 2, Super Metroid, Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission, all could be described the same way as you're describing Metroid Other M's action.
5/10? I think you are way too generous (I would give it a 3 or 4). Anyway I agree with you except on that in the story for Metroid Fusion was infinitely more interesting. I have played all of the Metroid games a lot, and have absolutely loved them all, except this one.
I could not force myself to play anything after the point when Adam told Samus that she could finally use her Vira suit after taking heat damage for the PAST 1/2 HOUR. I refuse to believe that a badass bounty hunter such as Samus who is working outside of Adam's jurisdiction would wait for Adam to tell her that she can use her suit because it is "a danger to the crew" or some such nonsense. Really!?! How is wearing an extra layer of armor a danger to anybody?
Sure the cutscenes were pretty, but that was about the only selling point of the game. The characters had no personality whatsoever (especially Samus), everybody talked in a monotone voice, and all of the dialogue felt choppy and thrown together. And every time that Samus referred to the Metroid as "the baby" I honestly thought that I was going to vomit.
I too am a Metroid fan, however if this is the direction that the series is going I won't be playing any of the new games.
