Video Labs released VLC 1.0.0 today. I tried to install, got some errors. Ignored 'em and finished the install, VLC won't work. Uninstalled, clean install, same errors.
Error opening files for writing: C:/Program Files/VideoLAN/VLC/libvlccore.dll
Error opening files for writing: C:/Program Files/VideoLAN/VLC/plugins/libvout_directx_plugin.dll
I figure I'll check the support part of the site, they have documentation and a wiki. WRONG! Everything redirects back to www.videolan.org
The install worked fine for me and it worked fine for me when I watched some Russell Peters, so hopefully you problem is some isolated thing and not widespread. It's a great program and I don't want it to be bogged down for it's big 1.0 release ^_^
In any case, if you are desperate to try the 1.0 version there is a portable version as well which might work where the installer doesn't. Far from the best solution but a stopgap if you are in a hurry.
Their wiki and changelog (I'm assuming they have one) are still down and they've pulled the feature list they had up before, but Lifehacker gave a brief summary.
What's new? Support for HD and other new formats, finer speed controls, customizable toolbars, AirTunes streaming, and much more.
On top of new features, this 1.0 release has been, as software types would expect, given a serious bug scrubbing and annoyance reworking. Obsessive-compulsive playback types will appreciate the better live recording, instant pausing, and finer-grained playback speed controls, while those working in non-common formats may find VLC's newfound support for AES3, Blu-Ray Linear PCM, Raw Dirac, and other expensive-sounding codecs enticing
I've not hit anything I can't do in the 0.9.x version I last installed, but I don't see any reason not to upgrade...
what is instantaneous pausing? is it something like if you remove focus from the VLC window; say clicking on my browser, it'll pause what i'm watchig automatically?
The real problem for me was that in certain formats the video and audio would stop at different times, and then when you unpause they would start at different times to make them line up with each other. It was really confusing.
