Nintendo Co., Ltd. (Minami-ward of Kyoto-city, President Satoru Iwata) will launch "Nintendo 3DS"(temp) during the fiscal year ending March 2011, on which games can be enjoyed with 3D effects without the need for any special glasses.
"Nintendo 3DS"(temp) is going to be the new portable game machine to succeed "Nintendo DS series", whose cumulative consolidated sales from Nintendo amounted to 125million units as of the end of December 2009, and will include backward compatibility so that the software for Nintendo DS series, including the ones for Nintendo DSi, can also be enjoyed.
We are planning to announce additional details at E3 show, which is scheduled to be held from June 15, 2010 at Los Angeles in the U.S.
A Japanese news website, Nikkei, has released further details of the 3DS device. (no word on if this is confirmed or rumors)
- Control stick instead of D-pad. - Rumble/force-feedback. - Improved wireless speed and battery life. - Accelerometer. - Screen that is smaller than 4 inches. - Timing on the announcement could be related to decreased software releases. - Nikkei expects release in second half of 2010.
There is also word saying the system will have a barely noticeable gap between the top and bottom screens, and near GCN quality graphics.

But in other news, Nintendo spoke about the 3DS yesterday. “We wanted to give the gaming industry a head’s up about what to expect from Nintendo at E3. We’ll invite people to play with the new device then.†- Ken Toyoda, chief spokesman at Nintendo
Yeah, at first this was everyone's thoughts about what the 3DS might be doing, but as you can see they achieved that with the DSi hardware.
Nintendo says they only release new consoles if there is something they want to do that the current models can't do.
Also that video said that the screens will be the same size as the DS Lite screens, which is not only unconfirmed but every other report said they will be smaller than 4.3".
Everything we know about the 3DS is rumor except that it can do 3D without the use of 3D Glasses.
I have to express my disappointment for this move on Nintendo's behalf. It's cool that there will be 3D graphics, but having a thumbstick? That's like taking a gamecube controller and slapping a screen on it.
Several developers that have experienced 3DS in its current form have reported, off the record, that it has processing capabilities that far exceed the Nintendo Wii and bring the device with abilities that are close to HD consoles such as PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
